Difference between lamda where condition and linq where condition? - c#

I am working with MVC Core with EF-6.x and I am using Lambda expression, but my senior told me use LINQ why, because while using lambda with where clause it will pull all the data from database and later it will apply where condition. In case of LINQ if you use where condition it will pull only filtered data. Please let me know what is correct?

Short answer: it doesn't really matter. Since context.tablename ultimately returns an IQueryable<T>, Entityframework will not try to hit the database until you try to iterate the final result from your expression, not to mention, .ToArray() and .ToList() each, does that iteration for you.
Either you used LINQ expression syntax (which gets compiled as LINQ methods) or LINQ methods, when you attempt to begin iterating the results, Entityframework creates an Expression tree for you underneath the hood that consists of your query altogether (including Wheres, Joins, GroupBys, etc). Since the structure of a LINQ might not percisely match the structure of a SQL query (or whatever data-source query), depending on the source (i.e database, e.g SQL Server), Entityframework then attempts to make the best possible optimization to your expression tree so that its structure would match an executable query on the source (e.g SQL Server query). Finally, it translates that expression tree into an actual query and executes it against the data source, and return your data (after doing all the mapping of course).
If you really, and I mean REALLY want to go through the complications of how an IQueryable engine works, I'd suggest taking a walk through Matt Warren's series: 'LINQ: Building an IQueryable provider series'. That's not actually Entityframework but it shares the same concept.

Both syntax will be translated into the same IL code. The difference, if the filter will be applied on server or client side is, if the source is IQueryable<T> or IEnumerable<T>.

Your senior is wrong, you can use the statement you prefer they are the same, both will filter the data at database level. If you have Sql Server as database server, you can use Sql Server Profiler to dump the queries executed by both statements and you will see that they are the same.

If by equivalent you means to the final results, then probably yes (depending how the provider implements those operations), the difference is in the second query you are using in-memory extensions.

Yes, in the first query, Where and OrderBy will be translated to SQL and the Select will be executed in memory.
In your second query all the information from the database is brought to memory, then is filtered and transformed in memory.
Categories is probably an IQueryable, so you will be using the extensions in Queryable class. this version of the extensions receive a Expression as parameter, and these expression trees is what allows transform your code to sql queries.
AsEnumerable() returns the object as an IEnumerable, so you will be using the extensions in Enumerable class that are executed directly in memory.
Yes they do the same thing but in different ways. The first query do all the selection,ordering and conditions in the SQL database itself.
However the second code segment fetches all the rows from the database and store it in the memory. Then after it sorts, orders, and apply conditions to the fetched data i.e now in the memory.
AsEnumerable() breaks the query into two parts:
The Inside-Part(query before AsEnumerable) is executed as LINQ-to-SQL
The Outside-Part(query after AsEnumerable) is executed as LINQ-to-Objects

How to get a correct result of binary string intersection in Entity to Linq query

I save my data in a binary-look string, "100010" ,for example. And I want to check whether it has same value in corresponding place with the other string "100000".
So I try to use "Intersection". In this Condition, the result of intersection will be "100000", and it could be seen as the item I need for my requirement. But how can I use this conception when I query a Entity to Linq statement?
Here is my thought:

"CategoryNumber" is my data, and "catekey" is the string for comparing. Both of them are binary-look string(cantain 6 chars). And if the count is not 0,they have '1's in the same index. And I can get the correct query.
Sadly, It didn't work. I always get DbExpressionBinding Error. Can somone tell me What's Wrong? Thanks.

LINQ to Entities is trying to create a SQL query out of your condition, but is not able to do it for the expression you specified.
One way to "fix" the problem would be to do the filtering in code instead of in SQL, but this will impact performance, because all of the records will be retrieved to the client and filtered there. This is how you could do it (notice the added ToList()):

A suggested way would be to do the filtering in SQL, but in this case you will need to write an equivalent stored procedure in SQL which will do the filtering and call that from your EF code. Still such filtering will not be very effective because SQL will not be able to use any indices and will always need to do a table scan.

Linq query nhibernate; not supported exception

I'm fairly new to nHibernate having come from an EF background and I'm struggling with the following query :

The intent of this query is to allow users to filter the two queries on parameters built up using the two Build???Specification functions and return the resultset. There could be many admission records and I would only like one PatientSearchResultModel per patient object, with the admission object being the newest one by Admission Date.
These objects are coming from nHibernate and it keeps return a Not Supported exception. There is also an association between Patient and Admissions thus : Patient.Admissions but i couldn't figure out how to then add the query filters return from the function Build???Specifications.
I'd be really grateful if someone could point me in the right direction; am I up against the Linq provider implementation here in nHibernate and need to move to Criteria or is it my Linq query ?
If anyone has any links or suggestions for good books or other learning materials in this area that would also be really helpful too.
I see several potential problems:
If you're using NHibernate 2.x + Linq2NHibernate explicit joins like that are not supported; in other versions they're just considered a smell.
I dont think NHibernate supports calling parameterized constructors in select clauses
I'm very sure NHibernate does not support calling instance methods in the select lambda
I'd suggest using the lambda syntax and SelectMany to alleviate potential join issues. Points #2 & #3 can be solved by projecting into an anonymous type, calling AsEnumerable then projecting into your model type.
Overall I'd suggest restructuring your code like:

Divide your query into parts and check which part runs and which doesn't.
My take on this is that select new ... is not supported in Linq to nHibernate.
I would recomend using something else, because it is simply too imature and feature-less to use seriously.
As with most popular LINQ-to-Database query providers, NHibernate will try to translate the whole query into a SQL statement to run against the database. This requires that all elements of your query are possible to express in the SQL flavour you're using.
In your query, the select new statement cannot be expressed in SQL, because you're making a call to the constructor of your PatientSearchResultModel class and are making a call to a GetPhaseTypeModel method.
You should restructure your query to express what you want to execute on the SQL database, then call AsEnumerable() to force the remainder of the query to be evaluated in-memory. After that call, you can call the constructor of your class and any .NET methods, and they will be executed as native code.
This query is too complex to describe it using Linq. It would give wrong result finally (if Patient has more than one admission records, result would have duplicate entries).
I see two steps for solution:
1) At development stage, use in-memory query. So, take Patients using ToList() first (query db at this moment). Some predicates (Patient filter like MRN, First, Last) could be used at this stage.
And then do search in-memory. Not performance, but working solution. Mark it for refactor to optimize later.
2) Finally, use NHibernate IQuery (ISQLQuery) and build sql query manually to make sure it would work as expected and work fast enough on SQL Server side. This is just read-only query and do not require Nhibernate query engine (Linq to Nhibernate) at all.

When should I use a CompiledQuery?

You should use a CompiledQuery when all of the following are true:
The query will be executed more than once, varying only by parameter values.
The query is complex enough that the cost of expression evaluation and view generation is "significant" (trial and error)
You are not using a LINQ feature like IEnumerable<T>.Contains() which won't work with CompiledQuery.
You have already simplified the query, which gives a bigger performance benefit, when possible.
You do not intend to further compose the query results (e.g., restrict or project), which has the effect of "decompiling" it.
CompiledQuery does its work the first time a query is executed. It gives no benefit for the first execution. Like any performance tuning, generally avoid it until you're sure you're fixing an actual performance hotspot.
2012 Update: EF 5 will do this automatically (see "Entity Framework 5: Controlling automatic query compilation") . So add "You're not using EF 5" to the above list.
Compiled queries save you time, which would be spent generating expression trees. If the query is used often and you'll save the compiled query, you should definitely use it. I had many cases when the query parsing took more time than the actual round trip to the database.
In your case, if you are sure that it would generate SELECT ID, Name FROM Tag without the WHERE case (which I doubt, as your AllQueries function should return IQueryable and the actual query should be made only after calling ToList) - you shouldn't use it.
As someone already mentioned, on bigger tables SELECT * FROM [someBigTable] would take very long and you'll spend even more time filtering that on the client side. So you should make sure that your filtering is made on the database side, no matter if you are using compiled queries or not.
compiled queries are more helpfull with linq queries with large expression trees say complex queries to gain performance over building expression tree again and again while reusing query. in your case i guess it will save a very little time.
Compiled queries are compiled when the application is compiled and every time you reuse a query often or it is complex you should definitely try compiled queries to make execution faster.
But I would not go for it on all queries as it is a little more code to write and for simple queries it might not be worthwhile.
But for maximum performance you should also evaluate Stored Procedures where you do all the processing on the database server, even if Linq tries to push as much of the work to the db as possible you will have situations where a stored procedure will be faster.
Compiled queries offer a performance improvement, but it's not huge. If you have complex queries, I'd rather go with a stored procedure or a view, if possible; letting the database do it's thing might be a better approach.

NHibernate - Equivalent of CountDistinct projection using LINQ

I'm in the midst of trying to replace a the Criteria queries I'm using for a multi-field search page with LINQ queries using the new LINQ provider. However, I'm running into a problem getting record counts so that I can implement paging. I'm trying to achieve a result
equivalent to that produced by a CountDistinct projection from the Criteria API using LINQ. Is there a way to do this?
The Distinct() method provided by LINQ doesn't seem to behave the way I would expect, and appending ".Distinct().Count()" to the end of a LINQ query grouped by the field I want a distinct count of (an integer ID column) seems to return a non-distinct count of those values.
I can provide the code I'm using if needed, but since there are so many fields, it's
pretty long, so I didn't want to crowd the post if it wasn't needed.

I figured out a way to do this, though it may not be optimal in all situations. Just doing a .Distinct() on the LINQ query does, in fact, produce a "distinct" in the resulting SQL query when used without .Count(). If I cause the query to be enumerated by using .Distinct().ToList() and then use the .Count() method on the resulting in-memory collection, I get the result I want.
This is not exactly equivalent to what I was originally doing with the Criteria query, since the counting is actually being done in the application code, and the entire list of IDs must be sent from the DB to the application. In my case, though, given the small number of distinct IDs, I think it will work, and won't be too much of a performance bottleneck.
I do hope, however, that a true CountDistinct() LINQ operation will be implemented in the future.
You could try selecting the column you want a distinct count of first. It would look something like: Select(p => p.id).Distinct().Count(). As it stands, you're distincting the entire object, which will compare the reference of the object and not the actual values.
