Getting an IndexOutOfRangeException when putting sql into an object array - c#

Currently working on a small tool for the company I am working at which shall handle the database. I have several classes handling various SQL functions, but whenever I try to put specific data from the database into a datagridview I get the Exception.
SQL function:
public class OUsersDB
{
SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection("Connection Information");
public SqlDataReader Select()
{
conn.Open();
SqlCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand();
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.CommandText = "SELECT au.ApplicationId, au.UserId, au.UserName, au.MobileAlias, au.LastActivityDate, au.Name, sms.number, am.email FROM aspnet_users AS au " +
" JOIN aspnet_membership AS am ON au.userid=am.userid " +
" JOIN smsphonebooks AS sms ON au.name=sms.name";
SqlDataReader ur = cmd.ExecuteReader();
return ur;
}
}
Winform datagrid function
public void Usersdb()
{
OUsersDB oudb = new OUsersDB();
SqlDataReader ur = oudb.Select();
myDataUsers.Rows.Clear();
while (ur.Read())
{
object[] objUsers = {
ur["au_ApplicationId"].ToString(),
ur["au_UserId"].ToString(),
ur["au_UserName"].ToString(),
ur["au_MobileAlias"].ToString(),
ur["au_LastActivityDate"].ToString(),
ur["au_Name"].ToString(),
ur["au_Phone"].ToString(),
ur["au_Email"].ToString(), };
myDataUsers.Rows.Add(objUsers);
conn.Close();
}
I have a similar sql function and object array futher up in the code which loads just fine, but once reaching this part I get the Exception on the
ur["au_ApplicationId"].ToString(),
It simply says
System.IndexOutOfRangeException: 'au_ApplicationId'

Change the obj to read the columns without the alias. You use aliases only to reference the columns in the query, but the output of the query won't have the aliases.
while (ur.Read())
{
object[] objUsers = {
ur["ApplicationId"].ToString(),
ur["UserId"].ToString(),
ur["UserName"].ToString(),
ur["MobileAlias"].ToString(),
ur["LastActivityDate"].ToString(),
ur["Name"].ToString(),
ur["Phone"].ToString(),
ur["Email"].ToString(), };
myDataUsers.Rows.Add(objUsers);
conn.Close();
}

Check if you get ANY object, maybe you get nothing at all.

You can try this:
https://stackoverflow.com/a/8656011/8512753
or remove the table aliases
ur["au_ApplicationId"].ToString(),
becomes
ur["ApplicationId"].ToString(),
and try assigning concrete values to the columns returned in your SQL
SELECT ApplicationId = au.ApplicationId, ...

Regarding the IndexOutOfRangeException, that's due to trying to access a column that doesn't exist in the reader. Not sure why you're prefixing columns with "au_" when the SELECT statement is not doing this.
I would use SqlDataAdapter instead and add add this method to OUsersDB.
public void FillTable(DataTable table)
{
SqlCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand();
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.CommandText = "SELECT au.ApplicationId, au.UserId, au.UserName, au.MobileAlias, au.LastActivityDate, au.Name, sms.number, am.email FROM aspnet_users AS au " +
" JOIN aspnet_membership AS am ON au.userid=am.userid " +
" JOIN smsphonebooks AS sms ON au.name=sms.name";
using(var adapter = new SqlDataAdapter(cmd))
adapter.Fill(table)
}
Change calling code to:
public void Usersdb()
{
OUsersDB oudb = new OUsersDB();
myDataUsers.Rows.Clear();
oudb.FillTable(myDataUsers);
}
Or here's a simple fix, instead. Change your SELECT statement to alias column names as the code is expecting.
SELECT au.ApplicationId as au_ApplicationId, au.UserId as au_UserId, au.UserName as au_UserName,
au.MobileAlias as au_MobileAlias, au.LastActivityDate as au_LastActivity, au.Name as au_Name,
sms.number as au_Phone, am.email as au_Email -- REST OF QUERY UNCHANGED

How can i create a customizable SQL function in Visual Studio

Is it possible to create an extendable SQL query in Visual studio?
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
con.Open();
SqlCommand cmd = con.CreateCommand();
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.CommandText = "Select geneID from Table3 where geneID in(" + filterdata + ")";
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
DataTable dt = new DataTable();
SqlDataAdapter da = new SqlDataAdapter(cmd);
da.Fill(dt);
dataGridView1.DataSource = dt;
con.Close();
}
Can this be extended to select any possible parameter from any possible tables using any possible conditions. I think it would look something like the following:
Select [Variable 1,Variable 2...] from [Table 1, Table2...] where [Condition1, Condition 2...]
The variables, tables and conditions in this case will be selected using a multitude of checkbox's. I want to incorporate any possible search into one button click.
Use sql joins ..Inside your commenttext like select a.row,b.rowtwo from tableone a inner join tabletwo b on a.row = b.row where a.row = your values
You can use the String.Format method
Converts the value of objects to strings based on the formats specified and inserts them into another string.
If you are new to the String.Format method, see the Getting started with the String.Format method section for a quick overview.
So you can use like that
cmd.CommandText = String.Format("Select {0} from {1} where {2}", columns, tables, conditions)

Return on my function doesn't work if using sql

I am populating a text box with the returned value of a function, but it doesn't work if I run the sql code inside the function. I can remove the sql related code and it works. so i'm stumped.
And by "doesn't work" i mean that the text box never gets populated with anything. it remains blank.
thanks
public string CreateResident()
{
string result = "hmm";
SqlConnection sqlConnection = new SqlConnection("Server=DELLXPS\\SQLEXPRESS; Initial Catalog=Warren_SEINDATASYSTEMS; Integrated Security=true;");
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand();
cmd.CommandText = "INSERT INTO [dbo].[NewUsers]([ResidentAccountNumber],[ResidentName],[ResidentAddress],[NumberOfVisitors],[TempPass],[Role])VALUES(#ResidentAccountNumber,#ResidentName,#ResidentAddress,#NumberOfVisitors,(select cast((Abs(Checksum(NewId()))%10) as varchar(1)) + char(ascii('a')+(Abs(Checksum(NewId()))%25)) + char(ascii('A')+(Abs(Checksum(NewId()))%25)) + left(newid(),5)),'resident')";
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.Connection = sqlConnection;
SqlParameter ResidentAccountNumber = new SqlParameter();
ResidentAccountNumber.ParameterName = "#ResidentAccountNumber";
ResidentAccountNumber.Value = txtboxResidenetAccountNumber.Text.Trim();
cmd.Parameters.Add(ResidentAccountNumber);
SqlParameter ResidentName = new SqlParameter();

{

}
protected void btnCreateResident_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
txtboxTempPassword.Text = CreateResident();
}
Your SQL is wrong and you have a lot of problems but I want to show you a way to make your code more readable. Format it like this:
cmd.CommandText = #"INSERT INTO [dbo].[NewUsers] ([ResidentAccountNumber],[ResidentName],[ResidentAddress], NumberOfVisitors],[TempPass], Role])
VALUES(
#ResidentAccountNumber,
#ResidentName,
#ResidentAddress,
#NumberOfVisitors,
(select cast((Abs(Checksum(NewId()))%10) as varchar(1)) + char(ascii('a')+(Abs(Checksum(NewId()))%25)) + char(ascii('A')+(Abs(Checksum(NewId()))%25)) + left(newid(),5)),
'resident')";
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.Connection = sqlConnection;
We know that a select in a VALUES constructor is not legal so that is one problem.
Also having a SELECT without a from seems strange -- did you copy your code correctly?
You are using ExecuteScalar -- do you know what that does? It shouldn't include a query that includes INSERT query.
I'm guessing you probably want a stored procedure.
I would suggest do not write query in C# code, you must use Stored Procedure for the same purpose.
If you want your query to return some id, primary key or some value then you must write query for that after your insert query.
you can use the following keywords in your select query,if you want to return id from table.
SCOPE_IDENTITY returns the last IDENTITY value inserted into an IDENTITY column in the same scope.
IDENT_CURRENT returns the last identity value generated for a specific table in any session and any scope.
##IDENTITY returns the last identity value generated for any table in the current session, across all scopes.
If you want to return only one record then use ExecuteScalar else you can use ExecuteReader.
If your only purpose is to insert data into the table then you should use ExecuteNonQuery.
With the help of comments I went with ExecuteReader instead of the ExecuteScaler. And changed the statement to return a value
INSERT INTO [table] ([fields]) OUTPUT Inserted.MyColumn VALUES(values)
C# Code:
reader = cmd.ExecuteReader();
try
{
while (reader.Read())
{
result = reader[0].ToString();
}
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
result = ex.Message;
}
return result;

Use Variable In SQL String

How can I add a variable to my SQL string and run it against the server successfully? I want to run this statement through my C#
protected void RunSQLQuery(string salesman, string connectionString)
{
SqlConnection cnn;
SqlCommand cmd;
StringBuilder sql = new StringBuilder();
SqlDataReader reader;
cnn = new SqlConnection(connectionString);
sql = new StringBuilder();
sql.Append("update database ");
sql.Append("set shippdate = GetDate() ");
sql.Append("where salesman = "' + salesman + "'");
sql.Append("and managerapproval is not null ");
cnn.Open();
cmd = new SqlCommand(sql.ToString(), cnn);
reader = cmd.ExecuteReader();
reader.Close();
cmd.Dispose();
cnn.Close
}
This presents multiple compile errors underlining my +salesman+ code. The errors are:
Only assignment, call, increment, decrement, and new object
expressions can be used as a statement
; expected
) expected
Too many characters in character literal Newline in constant
You are not adding the string object that salesman refers, you are adding salesman as a string literal.
Just add it as a parameter like;
var cmd = new SqlCommand("update database set shippdate = GetDate() where salesman = #salesman");
cmd.Parameters.Add("#salesman", salesman);
...
And use ExecuteNonQuery to execute your command, not SqlDataReader. This SqlDataReader is for return some data.
But more important, you should always use parameterized queries. This kind of string concatenations are open for SQL Injection attacks.
Also use using statement to dispose your connection and command automatically instead of calling Close or Dispose methods manually.
As a full example;
protected void RunSQLQuery(string salesman, string connectionString)
{
using(var cnn = new SqlConnection(connectionString))
using(var cmd = cnn.CreateCommand())
{
cmd.CommandText = #"update database set shippdate = GetDate()
where salesman = #salesman";
// I assume your column is nvarchar
cmd.Parameters.Add("#salesman", SqlDbType.NVarChar).Value = salesman;
cnn.Open();
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
}
}
For myself, I always prefer to use SqlParameterCollection.Add(string, SqlDbType, Int32) overload to specify my parameter type and it's size but since you never mentioned your salesman column type, I couldn't post this in my example.
As you can also see from the syntax highlighting, the compile errors are caused because you did not escape the quotes properly in sql.Append("where salesman = "' + salesman + "'");.
As a side note, you should never insert strings into sql queries without first validating them, or you are open to sql injection, e.g. if i pass "''; drop table database;" as salesman parameter. It is better to use SqlParameter.
I would suggest using the AddWithValue method from your sql command combined with the UPPER function to make it case insensitive:
SqlCommand cmd = cnn.CreateCommand();
cmd.CommandText = "UPDATE database SET shippdate = GetDate() WHERE UPPER(salesman) = UPPER(#salesMan)";
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("#salesMan", salesman);
if (cnn.State.Equals(ConnectionState.Closed))
{
cnn.Open();
}
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
cnn.Close();
As mentioned in above answers, yes, writing queries in this way is not a good way to do it. But still if you want to do it that way only, you will have to change:
sql.Append("where salesman = "' + salesman + "'");
to
sql.Append("where salesman = '" + salesman + "'");

Is this query to retrieve data from database correct?

I need to retrieve a value from a field in database. I have the used following code. but the value checkOrderId (which I need) shows the SQL string instead of the value from database. I don't know why it is doing so. Could somebody help me please?
string connectionString = "Data Source = xxyyzz;Initial Catalog = xyz; Integrated Security = True";
SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(connectionString);
connection.Open();
string tableName = "[GIS].[SecondaryTraffic].[PotentialBackHauls]";
string checkOrderId = "Select TOP 1 OrderID From" + tableName + "ORDER BY InsertDate DESC";
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(checkOrderId, connection);
//cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
OpenPop.Pop3.Pop3Client popConn = new OpenPop.Pop3.Pop3Client();
if (orderIdentity == checkOrderId)
{
popConn.DeleteMessage(messageNumber);
}
connection.Close();
I am new and dont have reputation to answer my question immediately. With everybody's help, i got this one solved...Great help, thanx everybody...following is my code.
string connectionString = "Data Source = EAEDEV;Initial Catalog = GIS; Integrated Security = True";
using (SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(connectionString))
{
connection.Open();
string tableName = "[GIS].[SecondaryTraffic].[PotentialBackHauls]";
string checkOrderId = "Select TOP 1 OrderID From " + tableName + " ORDER BY InsertDate DESC";
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(checkOrderId, connection);
string valueReturned = (string)cmd.ExecuteScalar();
OpenPop.Pop3.Pop3Client popConn = new OpenPop.Pop3.Pop3Client();
if (orderIdentity == valueReturned)
{
popConn.DeleteMessage(messageNumber);
}
connection.Close();
}
You need to execute the query and check the results, here you are just comparing a string with the query SQL.
Please see here
http://www.csharp-station.com/Tutorial/AdoDotNet/lesson03
for a tutorial.
Your expectation of the result being set into checkOrderId is incorrect. In this instance checkOrderId is just the query to execute and not the actual result.
You need to read the value back from executing the command:
using (var connection = new SqlConnection(connectionString))
using (var comm = new SqlCommand("Select TOP 1 OrderID From [GIS].[SecondaryTraffic].[PotentialBackHauls] ORDER BY InsertDate DESC", connection))
{
connection.Open();
object result = comm.ExecuteScalar(); // This is the key bit you were missing.
if (result != null)
{
// You can cast result to something useful
int orderId = (int)result;
}
} // Both comm and connection will have Dispose called on them here, no need to Close manually.
ExecuteScalar returns the value in the first cell (ie, column 1 row 1) as an object that you can cast to a better type (depending on what type it was in the result-set schema).
If you need to read multiple values, you need to look at ExecuteReader.
There are also other ways of doing this using output parameters, but that would pollute the point of the answer.
You can add space to your query
"Select TOP 1 OrderID From " + tableName + " ORDER BY InsertDate DESC";
Nota : I suggest you to use AddWithValue method with your parameter
string checkOrderId = "Select TOP 1 OrderID From #tableName ORDER BY InsertDate DESC";
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(checkOrderId, connection);
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("#tableName", tableName );
Link : http://msdn.microsoft.com/fr-fr/library/system.data.sqlclient.sqlparametercollection.addwithvalue.aspx
You don't actually run your command anywhere. Instead of the commented-out cmd.ExecuteNonQuery, you should look into the ExecuteScalar method, which allows you to read back a single result value from a query - which is what your query returns.
Add
int i = (Int32) cmd.ExecuteScalar();
right after
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(checkOrderId, connection);
then the variable i will contain the order id
No, this is not correct. You are comparing the variable orderId to your query string. I doubt that's what you want to do. I imagine you'd be better off calling cmd.ExecuteScalar() to retrieve the actual OrderID value. As noted by other answers, your query string is missing a space. But most importantly, it is bad practice to construct SQL queries in code. Although I can't see a security issue with this code, if you continue to use this method you will probably write code that is vulnerable to SQL injection. I recommend you learn to either use parameters or LINQ to build your queries.

How to check if mysql table is empty?

How to check if my table is empty from C#?
I have something like:
public MySqlConnection con;
public MySqlCommand cmd;
con = new MySqlConnection(GetConnectionString());
con.Open();
cmd = new MySqlCommand("SELECT * FROM data;", con);
Or I don't need to call SELECT statement?
You can use COUNT(*) with no WHERE close and see if exactly how many rows exist with the result.
Or you can do a SELECT (id) FROM tablename with no WHERE clause and if no rows are returned then the table is empty.
I'll give you an example in C# good luck
public bool checkEmptyTable(){
try
{
MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlCommand com = new MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlCommand();
conn = new MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlConnection("YOUR CONNECTION");
com.Connection = conn;
com.CommandText = "SELECT COUNT(*) from data";
int result = int.Parse(com.ExecuteScalar().ToString());
return result == 0; // if result equals zero, then the table is empty
}
finally
{
conn.Close();
}
}
If 'data' might be a big table you would be better with this (where pkdata is your primary key field)
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM data WHERE pkdata = (SELECT pkdata FROM data LIMIT 1);
This will run very quickly whether you have 0 rows in 'data' or millions of rows. Using SELECT with no WHERE or ORDER BY means it just pulls the first row available, LIMIT 1 stops it getting more than 1.
Maybe something to look for if you have a program that ran very quickly six months ago but now runs like a dog in treacle!
SELECT COUNT(*)
FROM table
WHERE `col_name` IS NOT NULL
