Hi guys I am trying to develop for a Windows Embedded Compact edition 2013 using Visual Studio 2013 on Windows 10. But I have not been able to.
I have installed the Application Builder and still could not find a template in Visual Studio 2013.
Please can anyone help.
Application Builder is just one of the pieces.
Another piece is the SDK that was developed for the target platform. This includes hardware components and drivers (BSP) and software components (what Windows Embedded Compact 2013) options have been installed. Hopefully this has been written for you.
If the SDK hasn't been developed or it needs other drivers or Windows components to be loaded for your project, you will need to install other Windows Embedded Compact 2013 tools.

I have an Windows Embedded Compact v8.00 device installed with build 6247. FYI - This device is an Siemens HMI.
Now I'm looking for the right way to develop applications for this version of Windows. I started trying with Visual Studio 2008, so I build a very simple application with just a useless textbox. After copying the executable to the device I start tried to run the test applications but nothing happens.
After searching the web I found out it's better to install Visual Studio 2015 PRO with an application builder from Microsoft's website.
Is this the right way to do? What else does I need to know when developing applications for Windows Compact 2013?
To create applications for Windows Embedded Compact 2013 you need VS2013 or VS2015 professional with the Application Builder plugin and a valid SDK installed on your PC.
If you develop managed apps you also need to check in the .NET runtime is already part of the image or find a way to deploy and install it permanently on your device (the way to do this may change depending on the device configuration, registry type etc.)
I am using windows 7 with visual studio 2017. I have some code I want to run on windows CE 4.1. How do I build the code for this version of CE? I see there is mention of a CE build platform 4.0 but can't find a download for it?
It depends on what kind of application do you have. If has been developed with Visual Studio probably you should be able to build it in an old version. VS2008 or VS2005 should still support CE 4. For sure they support CE 5,6 and 7.
It may be that the application has been developed with Embedded Visual C++ 4.0, you may be able to still find a download in MSDN but I've no idea about how it could run on Windows 10, maybe a WinXP virtual machine would be better.
If the application was developed using platform builder and integrated in the OS image you can still find it in MSDN but, again, this is quite an old tool and will probably have issues running on a recent PC.
I just downloaded and installed Xamarin for VS2015, including VS2015 SP2 and a host of other stuff. I created a "hello world!" app and got targets for iOS, Android, Universal Windows, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1.
I am new to developing for Android and iOS and know that if I want an iOS solution I'll need to purchase a Mac to do that. I have a couple of Windows Phone apps that I might convert to android and iOS apps, so a Mac seems inevitable.
However, my question is can I use the (now) free Xamarin for VS2015 to create and build C# apps that will run on OS X (not iOS), or do I have to learn Objective-C to do that?
There has been a ton of confusion over the new licensing schemes for Xamarin and Visual Studio so one of my coworkers (Amy Burns) put together this great, interactive guide: Licensing Options.
Just follow through the "options" from the top to the bottom by clicking on the appropriate links in a "choose your own adventure" style.
The short story is this: if you meet the requirements of the license, you can use the Community Edition of Visual Studio or Xamarin Studio to code in Xamarin.iOS (this includes watchOS and tvOS), Xamarin.Android and Xamarin.Mac.
If you don't meet the free license requirements you can purchase Visual Studio standalone or MSDN versions Professional or Enterprise (which includes extra features such as discounts on Test Cloud for Enterprise). Visual Studio Professional and Enterprise both include Xamarin Studio on Mac of the same level for free (see the Visual Studio Comparison Chart).
Any Apple OS (iOS, watchOS, tvOS or OS X) requires a physical Mac with the latest version of Xcode and Xamarin Studio installed. For all Apple OSes (excluding OS X), the Mac can be networked to a Windows machine running Visual Studio and development done from there. Mac OS X development in Xamarin.Mac must be done in Xamarin Studio on a physical Mac. These are Apple's restrictions, not Xamarin or Microsofts.
Yes, it is possible to create and build MAC OS apps with Xamarin and C#. Here you have the official Getting Started guide, where you'll find the requirements, such as:
A Mac computer running Mac OS X Yosemite(10.10) or greater.
Xcode 7 and above
Xamarin.Mac and Xamarin Studio
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Visual Studio is free in Mac OS only for MSDN subscribers. However, Xamarin Studio is free.
Xamarin provides Xamarin.Mac which consists of a set of OS-X API bindings (which in the Unified API version contain many of the same APIs as Xamarin.iOS as 64-bit iOS and OS-X share many of the same Frameworks, in name, function and parameters).
That said, you will need to use Xamarin Studio Community Edition on a Mac to do that C#/F# development as Xamarin.Mac is not supported within the Windows/Visual Studio environment.
From Xamarin's FAQ:
Can I still develop Xamarin.Mac apps?
Yes! All Xamarin Studio developers on Mac now have the ability to create Mac apps with Xamarin.Mac, in addition to iOS (and tvOS and watchOS).

I am trying to create sample application for Windows 8 Embedded Handheld or Windows Store App, for that I have following configuration.
Configuration:
1. Windows 8 64Bit OS
2. Visual Studio 2012 Express Edition With Update 4 Installed
3. Windows Phone 8 SDK, Downloaded From This Link.
4. Windows 8 Embedded Handheld SDK, Downloaded From This Link.
But when I start my Visual Studio I don't see any option for Creating Windows Store App as Given in This video.
Also I am not able to see installed Windows 8 Phone SDK and W8EH SDK in, about screen of the Visual Studio 2012.
UPDATE
It will be very helpful if we have list of all the supported versions of Visual Studio with there targeted use, like for Desktop/Mobile(or 'Phone' it is also one more confusion)/Handheld/Embedded/Store, else it is very confusing for the beginners to decide which version of Visual Studio to use for development of Embedded/Handheld Application development.
You have the wrong edition of VS Express. You have the edition for Windows Desktop, which is for creating traditional Windows desktop applications. You need the edition for Windows, which is for creating Store apps that target the Modern UI.
i am new bee in this field. i have a motorola mc70 device.i want to create an application for it in which device scans barcode and than put data of barcode into my sql server database. i have worked in visual studio 2010. now i have a motorola scanner sdk and user guide. but i don't know how to create application for these types of devices.
i have worked in c# so i am familiar with it and i am using sql server database for it.
i don't know where to start?? should i make console application or other type of application.
Can anyone help to sort this out and provide procedure to create application for this device...
Thanks in Advance...
If you're gonna to use .net then you have to get Visual Studio 2008 and download the Windows Mobile SDK. They removed the support for creating Windows Mobile applications in VS 2010 and up.
In Visual Studio 2008 you will find smart device project etc.. And there is also a Emulator for it.
There is other options to create applications for these devices. Like RhoMobile Suite. With it you code HTML5 / CSS3/ Javascript / Ruby etcc. But it is not free.
Developing applications in RhoMobile is free but when deploying it and uses some features will cost.
