I want to download file from FTP and open a download/save prompt in user's web browser, when the user clicks on a download button on ASP.NET C# page.
string strDownloadURL = System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings["DownloadURL"];
string HostName = System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings["HostName"];
string strUser = System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings["BasicAuthenticationUser"];
string strPWD = System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings["BasicAuthenticationPWD"];
FtpWebRequest request = (FtpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(HostName + strFile);
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.DownloadFile;
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(strUser, strPWD);
request.UsePassive = true;
request.UseBinary = true;
request.KeepAlive = false;
FtpWebResponse response = (FtpWebResponse)request.GetResponse();
Stream responseStream = response.GetResponseStream();
string fileName = #"c:\temp\" + strFile + "";
Directory.CreateDirectory(Path.GetDirectoryName(fileName));
FileStream file = File.Create(fileName);
byte[] buffer = new byte[2 * 1024];
int read;
while ((read = responseStream.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)) > 0) { file.Write(buffer, 0, read); }
file.Close();
responseStream.Close();
response.Close();
So, assuming you're writing the FTP request's response stream down to the ASP.NET response stream, and want to trigger the download dialog in the browser, you'll want to set the Content-Disposition header in the response.
// note: since you are writing directly to client, I removed the `file` stream
// in your original code since we don't need to store the file locally...
// or so I am assuming
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment;filename=" + strFile);
byte[] buffer = new byte[2 * 1024];
int read;
while ((read = responseStream.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)) > 0)
{
Response.OutputStream.Write(buffer, 0, read);
}
responseStream.Close();
response.Close();
The answer by #moribvndvs is correct. But the code can be way simpler with use of WebClient.OpenRead and Stream.CopyTo:
var filename = "file.zip";
Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" + filename);
var client = new WebClient();
client.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password");
var url = "ftp://ftp.example.com/remote/path/" + filename;
using (var ftpStream = client.OpenRead(url))
{
ftpStream.CopyTo(Response.OutputStream);
}
(where Response is ASP.NET HttpResponse).
See also Upload and download a file to/from FTP server in C#/.NET.
I try upload a file to an FTP-server with C#. The file is uploaded but with zero bytes.
private void button2_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
var dirPath = #"C:/Documents and Settings/sander.GD/Bureaublad/test/";
ftp ftpClient = new ftp("ftp://example.com/", "username", "password");
string[] files = Directory.GetFiles(dirPath,"*.*");
var uploadPath = "/httpdocs/album";
foreach (string file in files)
{
ftpClient.createDirectory("/test");
ftpClient.upload(uploadPath + "/" + Path.GetFileName(file), file);
}
if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(txtnaam.Text))
{
MessageBox.Show("Gelieve uw naam in te geven !");
}
}
The existing answers are valid, but why re-invent the wheel and bother with lower level WebRequest types while WebClient already implements FTP uploading neatly:
using (var client = new WebClient())
{
client.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(ftpUsername, ftpPassword);
client.UploadFile("ftp://host/path.zip", WebRequestMethods.Ftp.UploadFile, localFile);
}
Easiest way
The most trivial way to upload a file to an FTP server using .NET framework is using WebClient.UploadFile method:
WebClient client = new WebClient();
client.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password");
var url = "ftp://ftp.example.com/remote/path/file.zip";
client.UploadFile(url, #"C:\local\path\file.zip");
Advanced options
If you need a greater control, that WebClient does not offer (like TLS/SSL encryption, ascii/text transfer mode, active mode, transfer resuming, progress monitoring, etc), use FtpWebRequest. Easy way is to just copy a FileStream to an FTP stream using Stream.CopyTo:
var url = "ftp://ftp.example.com/remote/path/file.zip";
FtpWebRequest request = (FtpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(url);
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password");
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.UploadFile;
using (Stream fileStream = File.OpenRead(#"C:\local\path\file.zip"))
using (Stream ftpStream = request.GetRequestStream())
{
fileStream.CopyTo(ftpStream);
}
Progress monitoring
If you need to monitor an upload progress, you have to copy the contents by chunks yourself:
var url = "ftp://ftp.example.com/remote/path/file.zip";
FtpWebRequest request = (FtpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(url);
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password");
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.UploadFile;
using (Stream fileStream = File.OpenRead(#"C:\local\path\file.zip"))
using (Stream ftpStream = request.GetRequestStream())
{
byte[] buffer = new byte[10240];
int read;
while ((read = fileStream.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)) > 0)
{
ftpStream.Write(buffer, 0, read);
Console.WriteLine("Uploaded {0} bytes", fileStream.Position);
}
}

async Task<FtpStatusCode> FtpFileUploadAsync(string ftpUrl, string userName, string password, string filePath)
{
FtpWebRequest request = (FtpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(ftpUrl);
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.UploadFile;
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(userName, password);
using (FileStream fileStream = new FileStream(filePath, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read))
using (Stream requestStream = request.GetRequestStream())
{
await fileStream.CopyToAsync(requestStream);
}
using (FtpWebResponse response = (FtpWebResponse)await request.GetResponseAsync())
{
return response.StatusCode;
}
}
.NET Framework
public void UploadFtpFile(string folderName, string fileName)
{
FtpWebRequest request;
string folderName;
string fileName;
string absoluteFileName = Path.GetFileName(fileName);
request = WebRequest.Create(new Uri(string.Format(#"ftp://{0}/{1}/{2}", "127.0.0.1", folderName, absoluteFileName))) as FtpWebRequest;
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.UploadFile;
request.UseBinary = 1;
request.UsePassive = 1;
request.KeepAlive = 1;
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(user, pass);
request.ConnectionGroupName = "group";
using (FileStream fs = File.OpenRead(fileName))
{
byte[] buffer = new byte[fs.Length];
fs.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length);
fs.Close();
Stream requestStream = request.GetRequestStream();
requestStream.Write(buffer, 0, buffer.Length);
requestStream.Flush();
requestStream.Close();
}
}
How to use
UploadFtpFile("testFolder", "E:\\filesToUpload\\test.img");
use this in your foreach
and you only need to create folder one time
to create a folder
request = WebRequest.Create(new Uri(string.Format(#"ftp://{0}/{1}/", "127.0.0.1", "testFolder"))) as FtpWebRequest;
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.MakeDirectory;
FtpWebResponse ftpResponse = (FtpWebResponse)request.GetResponse();
The following works for me:
public virtual void Send(string fileName, byte[] file)
{
ByteArrayToFile(fileName, file);
var request = (FtpWebRequest) WebRequest.Create(new Uri(ServerUrl + fileName));
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.UploadFile;
request.UsePassive = false;
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(UserName, Password);
request.ContentLength = file.Length;
var requestStream = request.GetRequestStream();
requestStream.Write(file, 0, file.Length);
requestStream.Close();
var response = (FtpWebResponse) request.GetResponse();
if (response != null)
response.Close();
}
You can't read send the file parameter in your code as it is only the filename.
Use the following:
byte[] bytes = File.ReadAllBytes(dir + file);
To get the file so you can pass it to the Send method.
public static void UploadFileToFtp(string url, string filePath, string username, string password)
{
var fileName = Path.GetFileName(filePath);
var request = (FtpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(url + fileName);
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.UploadFile;
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(username, password);
request.UsePassive = true;
request.UseBinary = true;
request.KeepAlive = false;
using (var fileStream = File.OpenRead(filePath))
{
using (var requestStream = request.GetRequestStream())
{
fileStream.CopyTo(requestStream);
requestStream.Close();
}
}
var response = (FtpWebResponse)request.GetResponse();
Console.WriteLine("Upload done: {0}", response.StatusDescription);
response.Close();
}
In the first example must change those to:
requestStream.Flush();
requestStream.Close();
First flush and after that close.
This works for me,this method will SFTP a file to a location within your network.
It uses SSH.NET.2013.4.7 library.One can just download it for free.
//Secure FTP
public void SecureFTPUploadFile(string destinationHost,int port,string username,string password,string source,string destination)
{
ConnectionInfo ConnNfo = new ConnectionInfo(destinationHost, port, username, new PasswordAuthenticationMethod(username, password));
var temp = destination.Split('/');
string destinationFileName = temp[temp.Count() - 1];
string parentDirectory = destination.Remove(destination.Length - (destinationFileName.Length + 1), destinationFileName.Length + 1);
using (var sshclient = new SshClient(ConnNfo))
{
sshclient.Connect();
using (var cmd = sshclient.CreateCommand("mkdir -p " + parentDirectory + " && chmod +rw " + parentDirectory))
{
cmd.Execute();
}
sshclient.Disconnect();
}
using (var sftp = new SftpClient(ConnNfo))
{
sftp.Connect();
sftp.ChangeDirectory(parentDirectory);
using (var uplfileStream = System.IO.File.OpenRead(source))
{
sftp.UploadFile(uplfileStream, destinationFileName, true);
}
sftp.Disconnect();
}

Best way I've found is FluentFtp
You can find the repo here:
https://github.com/robinrodricks/FluentFTP
and the quickstart example here:
https://github.com/robinrodricks/FluentFTP/wiki/Quick-Start-Example.
And actually the WebRequest class recommended by a few people here, is not recommended by Microsoft anymore, check out this page:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/api/system.net.webrequest?view=net-5.0
// create an FTP client and specify the host, username and password
// (delete the credentials to use the "anonymous" account)
FtpClient client = new FtpClient("123.123.123.123", "david", "pass123");
// connect to the server and automatically detect working FTP settings
client.AutoConnect();
// upload a file and retry 3 times before giving up
client.RetryAttempts = 3;
client.UploadFile(#"C:\MyVideo.mp4", "/htdocs/big.txt",
FtpRemoteExists.Overwrite, false, FtpVerify.Retry);
// disconnect! good bye!
client.Disconnect();
I have observed that -
FtpwebRequest is missing.
As the target is FTP, so the NetworkCredential required.
I have prepared a method that works like this, you can replace the value of the variable ftpurl with the parameter TargetDestinationPath. I had tested this method on winforms application :
private void UploadProfileImage(string TargetFileName, string TargetDestinationPath, string FiletoUpload)
{
//Get the Image Destination path
string imageName = TargetFileName; //you can comment this
string imgPath = TargetDestinationPath;
string ftpurl = "ftp://downloads.abc.com/downloads.abc.com/MobileApps/SystemImages/ProfileImages/" + imgPath;
string ftpusername = krayknot_DAL.clsGlobal.FTPUsername;
string ftppassword = krayknot_DAL.clsGlobal.FTPPassword;
string fileurl = FiletoUpload;
FtpWebRequest ftpClient = (FtpWebRequest)FtpWebRequest.Create(ftpurl);
ftpClient.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(ftpusername, ftppassword);
ftpClient.Method = System.Net.WebRequestMethods.Ftp.UploadFile;
ftpClient.UseBinary = true;
ftpClient.KeepAlive = true;
System.IO.FileInfo fi = new System.IO.FileInfo(fileurl);
ftpClient.ContentLength = fi.Length;
byte[] buffer = new byte[4097];
int bytes = 0;
int total_bytes = (int)fi.Length;
System.IO.FileStream fs = fi.OpenRead();
System.IO.Stream rs = ftpClient.GetRequestStream();
while (total_bytes > 0)
{
bytes = fs.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length);
rs.Write(buffer, 0, bytes);
total_bytes = total_bytes - bytes;
}
//fs.Flush();
fs.Close();
rs.Close();
FtpWebResponse uploadResponse = (FtpWebResponse)ftpClient.GetResponse();
string value = uploadResponse.StatusDescription;
uploadResponse.Close();
}

I'm trying to create a file on an FTP server, but all I have is either a string or a stream of the data and the filename it should be created with. Is there a way to create the file on the server (I don't have permission to create local files) from a stream or string?
string location = "ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:21/TestLocation/Test.csv";
WebRequest ftpRequest = WebRequest.Create(location);
ftpRequest.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.UploadFile;
ftpRequest.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(userName, password);
string data = csv.getData();
MemoryStream stream = csv.getStream();
//Magic
using (var response = (FtpWebResponse)ftpRequest.GetResponse()) { }
Just copy your stream to the FTP request stream:
Stream requestStream = ftpRequest.GetRequestStream();
stream.CopyTo(requestStream);
requestStream.Close();
For a string (assuming the contents is a text):
byte[] bytes = Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(data);
using (Stream requestStream = request.GetRequestStream())
{
requestStream.Write(bytes, 0, bytes.Length);
}
Or even better use the StreamWriter:
using (Stream requestStream = request.GetRequestStream())
using (StreamWriter writer = new StreamWriter(requestStream, Encoding.UTF8))
{
writer.Write(data);
}
If the contents is a text, you should use the text mode:
request.UseBinary = false;
i make this for send a xml file to a FTP. It works fine. I thinks is what you need.
FtpWebRequest request = (FtpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create("ftp://XXXXXXXXXX//" + filename);
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.UploadFile;
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("user", "pwd");
request.UsePassive = true;
request.UseBinary = true;
request.KeepAlive = true;
StreamReader sourceStream = new StreamReader(file);
byte[] fileContents = Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(sourceStream.ReadToEnd());
sourceStream.Close();
request.ContentLength = fileContents.Length;
Stream requestStream = request.GetRequestStream();
requestStream.Write(fileContents, 0, fileContents.Length);
requestStream.Close();
FtpWebResponse response = (FtpWebResponse)request.GetResponse();

I am trying to download a log file to my program without save it to my local machine, and get the last line of the log.
can anyone send me an example of it or look at the code and tell me what is wrong.
thanks
FileStream outputStream = new FileStream(uri, FileMode.Create);
request = (FtpWebRequest)FtpWebRequest.Create(new Uri(uri));
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.DownloadFile;
request.UseBinary = true;
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(userName, Password);
FtpWebResponse response = (FtpWebResponse)request.GetResponse();
Stream ftpStream = response.GetResponseStream();
long cl = response.ContentLength;
int readCount;
readCount = ftpStream.Read(b, 0, b.Length);
while (readCount > 0)
{
outputStream.Write(b, 0, readCount);
readCount = ftpStream.Read(b, 0, b.Length);
}
temp2 = System.Text.Encoding.UTF8.GetString(b);
temp1 = temp2.Split(new string[] { "\r\n" }, StringSplitOptions.RemoveEmptyEntries);
LastItem = temp1.Last();
ftpStream.Close();
outputStream.Close();
response.Close();
I'm trying to download a file using FtpWebRequest.
private void DownloadFile(string userName, string password, string ftpSourceFilePath, string localDestinationFilePath)
{
int bytesRead = 0;
byte[] buffer = new byte[1024];
FtpWebRequest request = CreateFtpWebRequest(ftpSourceFilePath, userName, password, true);
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.DownloadFile;
Stream reader = request.GetResponse().GetResponseStream();
BinaryWriter writer = new BinaryWriter(File.Open(localDestinationFilePath, FileMode.CreateNew));
while (true)
{
bytesRead = reader.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length);
if (bytesRead == 0)
break;
writer.Write(buffer, 0, bytesRead);
}
}
It uses this CreateFtpWebRequest method I created:
private FtpWebRequest CreateFtpWebRequest(string ftpDirectoryPath, string userName, string password, bool keepAlive = false)
{
FtpWebRequest request = (FtpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(new Uri(ftpDirectoryPath));
//Set proxy to null. Under current configuration if this option is not set then the proxy that is used will get an html response from the web content gateway (firewall monitoring system)
request.Proxy = null;
request.UsePassive = true;
request.UseBinary = true;
request.KeepAlive = keepAlive;
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential(userName, password);
return request;
}
It downloads it. But the information is always corrupted. Anyone know what's going on?
Just figured it out:
private void DownloadFile(string userName, string password, string ftpSourceFilePath, string localDestinationFilePath)
{
int bytesRead = 0;
byte[] buffer = new byte[2048];
FtpWebRequest request = CreateFtpWebRequest(ftpSourceFilePath, userName, password, true);
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.DownloadFile;
Stream reader = request.GetResponse().GetResponseStream();
FileStream fileStream = new FileStream(localDestinationFilePath, FileMode.Create);
while (true)
{
bytesRead = reader.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length);
if (bytesRead == 0)
break;
fileStream.Write(buffer, 0, bytesRead);
}
fileStream.Close();
}
Had to use a FileStream instead.
Easiest way
The most trivial way to download a file from an FTP server using .NET framework is using WebClient.DownloadFile method:
WebClient client = new WebClient();
client.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password");
client.DownloadFile(
"ftp://ftp.example.com/remote/path/file.zip", #"C:\local\path\file.zip");
Advanced options
Use FtpWebRequest class, if you need a greater control only, that WebClient class does not offer (like TLS/SSL encryption, progress monitoring, ascii/text transfer mode, resuming transfers, etc). An easy way, is to just copy an FTP response stream to FileStream using Stream.CopyTo method:
FtpWebRequest request =
(FtpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create("ftp://ftp.example.com/remote/path/file.zip");
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password");
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.DownloadFile;
using (Stream ftpStream = request.GetResponse().GetResponseStream())
using (Stream fileStream = File.Create(#"C:\local\path\file.zip"))
{
ftpStream.CopyTo(fileStream);
}
Progress monitoring
If you need to monitor a download progress, you have to copy the contents by chunks yourself:
FtpWebRequest request =
(FtpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create("ftp://ftp.example.com/remote/path/file.zip");
request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("username", "password");
request.Method = WebRequestMethods.Ftp.DownloadFile;
using (Stream ftpStream = request.GetResponse().GetResponseStream())
using (Stream fileStream = File.Create(#"C:\local\path\file.zip"))
{
byte[] buffer = new byte[10240];
int read;
while ((read = ftpStream.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)) > 0)
{
fileStream.Write(buffer, 0, read);
Console.WriteLine("Downloaded {0} bytes", fileStream.Position);
}
}
