C# MVC Calling a method in different path using AJAX - c#

I have a HomeController in my ASP.NET MVC application in folder "Controllers". My View is in: "View/Home/Index.cshtml" (look at my figure below).
I am using Ajax to get some json file every a few second. Problem is in Ajax URL, because I really don't know and didn't find, how to tell that property, that it has to go back a few folders and then find the HomeController.
My Solution looks like this:
Here is a method in my HomeController:
[HttpGet]
public ActionResult GetRandomFeed()
{
Item i = ss.getRandomFeed();
return Json(new { Source = i.Media.Source, Avatar = i.User.Avatar, Text = i.Text, Name = i.User.Name }, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet);
}
My AJAX in the View:
setInterval(function () {
$.ajax({
type: "GET",
url: '/HomeController.cs/GetRandomFeed', // Of course I have tried a lots of attempts in here
contentType: "application/json;", // Not sure about this
dataType: "json",
success: function (response) {
console.log("Success :)");
},
error: function() {
console.log("Error!");
}
});
}, 2000);
All I want to get that JSON file (or can be even an array of strings) and use it in my Success function. It is a simple Slide Show and JSON contains the URLs that I want to show in the page every X seconds (just changing source of an image that is in that JSON file).
I couldn't find anything like this. How to use that URL correctly OR found something similiar for WebForms but cannot use it in MVC.

Change your AJAX URL declaration to:
url: '/Home/GetRandomFeed'
Remove the .cs
Or you can also do, assuming this view is under your controller:
url: '#Url.Action("GetRandomFeed")'

In my experience, it doesn't seem enter the function is just because the JSON return from the controller doesn't include Status = "OK"
[HttpGet]
public ActionResult GetRandomFeed()
{
...
...
return Json(new
{
Status = "Ok", ...
}

ASP.NET Core MVC RedirectToAction isn't working

I have seen lots of questions regarding this issue but none of those resolved my problem.
My problem: my redirect action method hits the method I am redirected to, but the view stays on the same page it never changes to the redirected one.
From my Index.chstml I am creating a partial view.
From that partial view using AJAX I am submitting a request to my controller. AJAX code is below
$.ajax({
method: 'POST',
url: "/Home/SubmitTest",
dataType: "json",
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
data: JSON.stringify(arr),
success: function (response) {
}
});
My controller code is here. I am receiving data from AJAX method and performing some jobs. In the end, I am trying to redirect the user to another method.
[HttpPost]
public IActionResult SubmitTest([FromBody] List<TestSubmitViewModel> data)
{
// Rest of the code goes here
return RedirectToAction(nameof(PipelineList));
}
The method I am redirecting to is below. Both methods are in the same controller. After redirection, I am getting hit to this method. But my view still stays in the previous URL which is
https://localhost:44339/Home/Index
but it supposed to redirected to
https://localhost:44339/Home/PipelineList
Code:
[HttpGet]
[AllowAnonymous]
public async Task<IActionResult> PipelineList()
{
List<PipelineViewModel> itemList = new List<PipelineViewModel>();
/// my other code goes here
return View(itemList);
}
Note: my PipelineList() works fine when I am coming to this action method directly from UI. What am I doing wrong here and what can I do to redirect to the URL?
I am using .NET Core 5.
Here is my routing information from StartUp.cs:
app.UseEndpoints(endpoints =>
{
endpoints.MapControllerRoute(
name: "default",
pattern: "{controller}/{action}/{id?}",
defaults: new { controller = "Home", action="SignIn"});
});
UPDATE
Thank you guys for pointing out the problem I was having.
Using AJAX was necessary for me to pass the selected values (which were from a table created by JS) from UI.
Finally, I made it work by changing my Controller and AJAX code.
Updated Controller:
[HttpPost]
public async Task<JsonResult> SubmitTest([FromBody]
List<TestSubmitViewModel> data)
{
try
{
// my codes goes here
return Json(new {StatusCode = statusCode });
}
catch (Exception)
{
return Json(new {StatusCode = 500 });
}
}
Updated AJAX:
$.ajax({
method: 'POST',
url: "/Home/SubmitTest",
dataType: "json",
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
data: JSON.stringify(arr),
success: function (response) {
if (response.statusCode == 200) {
var url = "/GitLab/PipelineList";
window.location.href = url;
} else {
alert("error");
}
}
});
I know this might not be the best solution but for now, it did work. Thanks a lot to #Sergey and #Filipe
As #Sergey says, you used the wrong senior for ajax. Ajax is normally used when you want to update part of the page instead of refreshing the whole page to increase the customer experience and page load speed. If you want to redirect to another page and there is no other specific reason, there is no need to use ajax.
You could find the ajax server has returned the right 302 redirect to the client side and it redirect to the new page:
The right way is directly redirect to the new page like this:
<form asp-action="SubmitTest" asp-controller="Home" method="post">
#*Other input value you want to submit*#
<input type="submit" value="Click"/>
</form>
Result:

Return view after ajax post to controller

I'm sending some json data with ajax by post
function SendF() {
$.ajax({
url: '#Url.Action("Summary")',
type: 'POST',
data: JSON.stringify(flags),
contentType: "application/json;charset=utf-8",
success: function() {
},
error: function() {
alert("Oops! We've experienced a connection problem!");
}
});
}
to my controller
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult Summary(List<string> flagsChecked)
{
[...]
return View(flags);
}
and tried returning a view with data I've processed, but I guess it's not gonna happen since ajax is all about asynchronous http requests. How do I change my code to be synchronous?
The whole idea behind using ajax is to give the user the partial page update experience. If you are making an ajax call and once that is done and you are doing a redirect to another page, it does not give the partial page update experience to user. It looks very similar to the normal form submit(full page submit).
If you absolutely have to send the data to server via ajax , but want to do the redirect after the ajax call is successfully finished, you can do that using javascript in the success or done callback event on the $.ajax method.
All you have to do is, set the location.href property to the new url.
var flags = ["aa", "bb", "cc"];
$.ajax({
url: '#Url.Action("Summary")',
type: 'POST',
data: JSON.stringify(flags),
contentType: "application/json;charset=utf-8"
}).done(function(res) {
window.location.href = res.newUrl;
}).fail(function(xhr, a, error) {
console.log(error);
});
This assumes that your server action method returns a JSON response with the newUrl property which contains the url you want to redirect to .
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult Summary(List<string> flagsChecked)
{
return Json(new { newUrl = Url.Action("Index","Home") });
}
One way to do this would be to send the request to the controller via ajax and then render a partial view on your page. The easiest way would be to use the built in ajax helpers in ASP MVC. Here is a link to another post that gives a pretty good overview:
How to render partial view in MVC5 via ajax call to a controller and return HTML

Ajax post not working MVC 5

I'm trying to post data into a controller but it doesn't seems to work, I need the post to include the content of the view into a div when done but I cant quite achieve it
Here's my js function:
function show(num) {
$.ajax({
dataType: "html",
type: "POST",
url: "Student/Schedule",
data: { number: num },
success: function (a) {
// Replace the div's content with the page method's return.
alert("success");
$('#schedule').load(a);
}
});
}
And, here's my controller:
public ActionResult Schedule(String number)
{
return View(number);
}
I am a noob in MVC and C#, so any help is welcome.
There are somethings that you should fix to solve the problem.
Change Url to "/Student/Schedule"
You are using "Student/Schedule" as url, so you are trying to call an action named "Student".
Add [HttpPost] to your action.
You should return PartialView("Schedule", number);.
When you use return View(number) it uses the string value of number as your view name. You should explicitly pass view name and model.
Use $('#schedule').html(a);
It's better to add an error function to your ajax call to be able to find errors:
error: function (jqXHR, textStatus, errorThrown) {
alert(errorThrown);
//or you can put jqXHR.responseText somewhere as complete response. Its html.
}
Your action should return a Partial View, not a View.
Change your action to:
[HttpPost]
// by the way use string instead of String
public ActionResult Schedule(string number)
{
return PartialView("_Schedule", number);
}
Then, you'll need to create a partial view named _Schedule.cshtml.
Also, you need to change $('#schedule').load(a); to $('#schedule').html(a); And, I'd suggest that you use a Url.Action to set your url in your ajax call, like this:
function show(num) {
$.ajax({
dataType: "html",
type: "POST",
url: '#Url.Action("Schedule", "Student")',
data: { number: num },
success: function (a) {
// Replace the div's content with the page method's return.
alert("success");
$('#schedule').html(a);
}
});
}
I had the same issue what i did was adding jquery.unobtrusive-ajax.js to my scripts

How to refresh my Partial View after Ajax Post in MVC?

So basically I'm trying to show some Profile Data in my MVC Application.
Right now, everytime I click on a date on my Telerik Kendo Calendar, I can refresh the whole page and update the data I want.
However, instead of refreshing the whole I just want to refresh the partial views that shows only the data that updates after selecting the date.
Index.cshtml
<!--CODE-->
#Html.Partial("_WorkingTimeData")
<!--CODE-->
_WorkingTimeData.cshtml
var workedTime = ViewData["WorkedTimeToday"];
var hoursPerDay = ViewData["HoursPerDayContract"];
<p>You worked #workedTime hours</p>
<p>Hours Per Day (Contract) #hoursPerDay Hours</p>
Yes, right now I'm ViewDatas and it works.
This is the ajax code in Index.cshtml
$.ajax({ url: '/Profile/Index',
dataType: "json",
type: "POST",
data: JSON.stringify(10),
success: function(returl){
alert('It worked');
location.href=returl.Url;
},
error: function(jqXHR,responseText,textStatus){ alert(jqXHR.responseText) } });
Controller
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult Index(string number){
//THINGS TO DO
var redirectUrl = new UrlHelper(Request.RequestContext).Action("Index", "Profile");
return Json(new { Url = redirectUrl });
}
Well I'm very new to this, and I've been doing my research. However I still have some questions:
- Do I need to create a post method for _WorkingTimeData instead of Index like I have?
- Do I need to create a ViewModel for the Partial View?
Thanks
EDIT NUMBER 2 FOR VISHAL:
This didn't work at all, not even an alert, because, strangely, it doesn't recognise the calendar...
$("#calendar").kendoCalendar({
change : function() {
$.ajax({
url: "/Profile/WorkingTimeData",
type: "get"
}).done(function(data) {
$("#profile-timeline").html(data);
});
}});
It says $("#calendar").kendoCalendar is not a function (Telerik says that it's this way)
As for this, it reached the controller but didn't update anything:
function change() {
alert("Escolheste outro dia");
var calendar = $("#calendar").data("kendoCalendar");
var current = calendar.current();
alert(current);
$.ajax({
url: "/Profile/WorkingTimeData",
type: "get"
}).done(function(data) {
$("#profile-timeline").html(data);
});
}
I think it's because of the profile-timeline... It's a div in my view
Do I need to create a post method for _WorkingTimeData?
Yes, you need to create. But, Get would be fine too.
Do I need to create a ViewModel for the Partial View?
Not needed. If required you can create.
But, by looking at your partial view you are just using ViewData[""]. So, you need not to create any ViewModel.
Just create a method in Controller returning _WorkingTimeData PartialView.
And call that method by JQuery ajax on your DatePicker change event and replace the contents of the Div.
For example.
Controller
public PartialViewResult WorkingTimeData()
{
ViewData["WorkedTimeToday"]="NEW VALUE";
ViewData["HoursPerDayContract"] = "NEW VALUE";
return this.PartialView("_WorkingTimeData");
}
JavaScript
$("DATEPICKERELEMENT").change(function() {
$.ajax({
url: "/CONTROLLER/WorkingTimeData",
type: "get"
}).done(function(data) {
alert(data);
$("#divisionIdContainingPartialView").html(data);
}).fail(function() {
alert('error');
});
});
I wrote a post that details why you need to break the logic of thinking about partial views client-side. If you're interested you can find it here.
The TL;DR version is simply, all you have client-side is HTML. There's no knowledge about what was or was not rendered to the response via a partial view. As a result, the real question is "How do I change a portion of my HTML page based on an AJAX response?". In the simplest form, you simply select some element on the page and then alter its inner HTML. You can do that with some custom HTML created client-side or you can actually pass back an HTML document as your AJAX response and then insert that.

ASP.NET MVC: passing a complex viewmodel to controller

firs of all i searched for my question but couldnt find anything that helped me get any further.
i am trying to implement a view which allows me to set permissions for the current user.
As the data-structure i use following recursive class where each PermissionTree-Object references the sub-permissions (permissions are hierarchically structured in my application) :
public class PermissionTree
{
public Permission Node; //the permission object contains a field of type SqlHierarchyId if that is relevant
public bool HasPermission;
public IList<PermissionTree> Children;
//i cut out the constructors to keep it short ...
}
here is how the controller looks like:
//this is called to open the view
public ActionResult Permissions()
{
//pass the root element which contains all permission elements as children (recursion)
PermissionTree permissionTree = PopulateTree();//the fully populated permission-tree
return View(permissionTree);
}
//this is called when i submit the form
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult Permissions(PermissionTree model)
{
SetPermissions(model);
ViewData["PermissionsSaved"] = true;
return View(model);//return RedirectToAction("Index");
}
in am using a strongly typed view like this:
#model PermissionTree
//....
#using (Html.BeginForm("Permissions", "Permission", null, FormMethod.Post, new { #class = "stdform stdform2" }))
{
<input name="save" title="save2" class="k-button" type="submit" />
<div class="treeview">
//i am using the telerik kendoUI treeview
#(Html.Kendo().TreeView()
.Name("Permissions")
.Animation(true)
.ExpandAll(true)
.Checkboxes(checkboxes => checkboxes
.CheckChildren(true)
)
.BindTo(Model, mapping => mapping
.For<PermissionTree>(binding => binding
.Children(c => c.Children)
.ItemDataBound( (item, c) => {
item.Text = c.Node.PermissionName;
item.Checked = c.HasPermission;
})
)
)
)
ok, so when i click the button, i want my viewmodel to be sent to the controller action that is decorated with [HttpPost]. But when i debug the application, the received model does not really contain my data (it is not null though).
Does anyone know how i can achieve my goal and get the whole viewmodel?
best regards,
r3try
I think it's better to use a JSON post here ,then it's easy to prepare the object in the javascript side.
I don't know how your HTML looks like or the names of the elements you can easyly use javascript/Jquery to build the client side json object with similar names and slimier hierarchy/dataTypes just like in the PermissionTree class. And then use Ajax post to post as JSON
var PermissionTree={Node:{},HasPermission:false,Children:{}}
$.ajax({ data:PermissionTree
type: "POST",
url: 'YourController/Permissions',
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
dataType: "json",
success: function (result) {
}
);
The important thing is you need to find a better way of going throuth the tree view and build the object in javascript.
as i cant get that to work i was trying a slightly different approach:
example for adding a node:
- press add button -> execute ajax call -> add the node in nhibernate -> call the view again with the new data (the new node included)
controller-action that is called by the ajax request:
[Authorize]
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult AddPermission(string parentPermissionName, string permissionName)
{
var pd = ServiceContext.PermissionService.permissionDao;
Permission parentPermission = pd.GetPermissionByName(parentPermissionName);
if (parentPermission == null) {
parentPermission = pd.GetRoot();
}
if (parentPermission != null && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(permissionName) && !pd.PermissionExists(permissionName))//only add with a name
{
pd.AddPermission(parentPermission, permissionName);
}
//refresh data
PermissionTree permissionTree = LoadTreeSQLHierarchy(null, false);//start at root
return View("Permissions", permissionTree);
}
Ajax Request in the View:
function addNode() {
//... get the data here
var addData = { parentPermissionName: selectedNodeName, permissionName: newNodeName };
$.ajax(
{
data: addData,
type: "POST",
url: '#Url.Action("AddPermission", "Permission")',
dataType: "json",
success: function (result) {
//$('.centercontent').html(response);//load to main div (?)
return false;
},
error: function (xhr, ajaxOptions, thrownError) {
alert(xhr.status + ":" + thrownError);
return false;
}
}
);
return false;
}
But when i execute this i get an error stating that json.parse hit an invalid character (i get this error at the alert in the ajax's error function).
Judging from that message i would say that the problem is that i am returning html but the ajax call expects json or so...
But what is the correct way to just reload my view with the new data? Can i somehow tell the ajax call to not go back at all and just execute the called controller-method?
