Deserialize json data into list in c# - c#

I am calling an external web service and this is what I get in response after posting to their server:
{
"status":200,
"data":{
"h21":{
"total_price":{
"acacia":{
"available":0,
"price":null,
"availability":false
},
"maple":{
"available":7,
"price":2399.0,
"availability":true
}
}
},
"h17":{
"total_price":{
"mahogany":{
"available":1,
"price":1899.0,
"availability":true
},
"oak":{
"available":0,
"price":null,
"availability":false
},
"maple":{
"available":6,
"price":1649.0,
"availability":true
}
}
}
}
}
I want this response to be converted into a list. I used jsontocsharp online converter to generate class and use code below:
var Jsonresult = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<Sstageback.Models.Sstage.treeboRoomTypes.RootObject>(JsonReplace);
But the thing is mine is a dynamic JSON response which can change over course of time.
Note: The response which I get from the server is hotel and its room availability so while generating classes I can't generate with a single class file since the hotel id's may change also the room types and its availability also changes.
Example: h21 is one hotel id and total_price has its room type details similarly h17 is the next hotel and total_price has its room type details.

Basically, TotalPrice should be a Dictionary<string, Availability> or similar. It's not clear what list you'd have, but that's naturally a dictionary. That's then nested within a dictionary at the top level.
Sample code:
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.IO;
using System.Linq;
using Newtonsoft.Json;
public class Response
{
public int Status { get; set; }
public Dictionary<string, Hotel> Data { get; set; }
}
public class Hotel
{
[JsonProperty("total_price")]
public Dictionary<string, Room> TotalPrice { get; set; }
}
public class Room
{
public int Available { get; set; }
public decimal? Price { get; set; }
public bool Availability { get; set; }
}
class Test
{
static void Main(string[] args)
{
var text = File.ReadAllText("test.json");
var response = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<Response>(text);
foreach (var pair in response.Data)
{
Console.WriteLine($"Key: {pair.Key}");
foreach (var nestedPair in pair.Value.TotalPrice)
{
var room = nestedPair.Value;
Console.WriteLine($" {nestedPair.Key}: {room.Available}/{room.Price}/{room.Availability}");
}
}
}
}
Output:
Key: h21
acacia: 0//False
maple: 7/2399.0/True
Key: h17
mahogany: 1/1899.0/True
oak: 0//False
maple: 6/1649.0/True

You'll need to make a DTO model that corresponds with the response. The value of a attribute can change, that's no problem, as long as the type stays the same ( an int stays an int and a string stays a string).
Your Object could look like this:
public class Room{
public int Available { get; set;}
public int Price { get; set; }
public bool availability { get; set; }
}
public class Hotel{
public string Name { get; set; }
public List<Room> Rooms { get; set; }
}
You should convert Serialize and Deserialize this. This is only an example, you want your model to be 100% the same as your JSON.
For an easy conversion between Models and DTO, you could use AutoMapper: http://automapper.org/

Json with data inconsistency

I got this strange API response from one external service:
{emplooye: "Michael",age:"25",attachments:[{idAttachment: "23",attachmentPath:"C://Users/1"},{idAttachment: "24",attachmentPath:"C://Users/2"}]},{emplooye: "John",age:"30",attachments:{idAttachment: "25",attachmentPath:"C://Users/3"}}
Has anyone ever faced a situation where sometimes the "Attachment" property can be an array, sometimes it can be an object? I created a class to manipulate the data, but when I find an object, the code breaks.
I'm doing this in C#.
Class Used
public class Attachments
{
public string idAttachment{ get; set; }
public string attachmentPath{ get; set; }
}
public class Root
{
public string emplooye {get; set;}
public string age {get;set}
public List<Attachments> attachments { get; set; } = new List<Attachments>();
}
your json is not even close to json, should be something like this
var json = "[{\"emplooye\":\"Michael\",\"age\":\"25\",\"attachments\":[{\"idAttachment\":\"23\",\"attachmentPath\":\"C://Users/1\"},{\"idAttachment\":\"24\",\"attachmentPath\":\"C://Users/2\"}]},{\"emplooye\":\"John\",\"age\":\"30\",\"attachments\":{\"idAttachment\":\"25\",\"attachmentPath\":\"C://Users/3\"}}]";
Using Newtonsoft.Json you can create a JsonConstructor
using Newtonsoft.Json;
List<Data> data= JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<List<Data>>(json);
public class Data
{
public string emplooye { get; set; }
public string age { get; set; }
public List<Attachments> attachments { get; set; }
[JsonConstructor]
public Data(JToken attachments)
{
if (attachments.Type.ToString() == "Array")
this.attachments = attachments.ToObject<List<Attachments>>();
else
this.attachments = new List<Attachments> { attachments.ToObject<Attachments>() };
}
public Data() {}
}
public class Attachments
{
public string idAttachment { get; set; }
public string attachmentPath { get; set; }
}
You can use Newtonsoft to parse to a JToken which will handle the typing for you, but with the downside of not having a stable and predictable class to deserialize to automatically
Then, you would want to check its type, which returns a JTokenType enum
Once you know what the underlying types are, marshal the data into your DTO classes
JToken responseJT = JToken.Parse(json); //json string
if (responseJT.Type == JTokenType.Array)
//its an array, handle as needed ...
else if (responseJT.Type == JTokenType.Object)
//its an object, handle as needed ...
Personally, I would keep the attachments property as a List<Attachments> and if the JToken has a JSON object I would just set it as the [0] index of that property. This way things stay consistent and you can use LINQ on that property with ease

class property manipulation when parsing json data in c#

I am practicing with web api. My goal is to create a Get endpoint, which receive data from an external api, then return a different result. external api link: https://www.themealdb.com/api/json/v1/1/search.php?f=a, The external api data looks like:
{
"meals": [
{
"idMeal": "52768",
"strMeal": "Apple Frangipan Tart",
"strDrinkAlternate": null,
"strCategory": "Dessert",
.....
},
{
"idMeal": "52893",
"strMeal": "Apple & Blackberry Crumble",
....
}
]
}
I want my endpoint provide a different result like the following:
[
{
"idMeal": "52768",
"strMeal": "Apple Frangipan Tart",
"ingredients": ["Apple", "sugar"...]
},
{
"idMeal": "52893",
"strMeal": "Apple & Blackberry Crumble",
"ingredients": ["Apple", "sugar"...]
}
]
The following code is what I attempted so far, It's working, but the moment I changed property ingredient1 from public to private, that ingredient in list will become null, also, there are so many ingredients, some of them are null by default, I don't want to add them if they are null, how can I fix these two issues? Thanks a lot
using System.Text.Json;
using System.Text.Json.Serialization;
using Microsoft.AspNetCore.Mvc;
using RestSharp;
namespace testAPI.Controllers;
public class Content
{
[JsonPropertyName("meals")]
public List<Meal> Meals { get; set; }
}
public class Meal
{
[JsonPropertyName("idMeal")]
public string MealId { get; set; }
[JsonPropertyName("strMeal")]
public string Name { get; set; }
[JsonPropertyName("strIngredient1")]
public string Ingredient1 { get; set; }
[JsonPropertyName("strIngredient2")]
public string Ingredient2 { get; set; }
[JsonPropertyName("strIngredient20")]
public string Ingredient20 { get; set; }
public List<string> Ingredients
{
get { return new List<string>(){Ingredient1, Ingredient2, Ingredient20};}
}
}
[ApiController]
[Route("api/[controller]")]
public class DishesController : ControllerBase
{
[HttpGet]
public async Task<IActionResult> GetAllRecipes()
{
var client = new RestClient($"https://www.themealdb.com/api/json/v1/1/search.php?s=");
var request = new RestRequest();
var response = await client.ExecuteAsync(request);
var mealList = JsonSerializer.Deserialize<Content>(response.Content);
return Ok(mealList.Meals);
}
}
To address the problems one at a time...
the moment I changed property ingredient1 from public to private, that ingredient in list will become null
Changing the access modifier affects both deserialization and serialization, so this cannot be used to only stop it from serializing the property. You should split the data models up into what you want to receive and what you want to expose/return.
there are so many ingredients, some of them are null by default, I don't want to add them if they are null
Addition to splitting up the data models you can handle this when mapping from one model to the other.
The following code should fix both issues:
namespace TheMealDb.Models
{
// These are the models you receive from TheMealDb
// JSON converted to classes with https://json2csharp.com/
public class Root
{
public List<Meal> meals { get; set; }
}
public class Meal
{
public string idMeal { get; set; }
public string strMeal { get; set; }
public string strIngredient1 { get; set; }
public string strIngredient2 { get; set; }
public string strIngredient3 { get; set; }
// Other properties removed for brevity...
}
}
namespace Internal.Models
{
// This is the model you want to return from your controller action
public class Meal
{
[JsonPropertyName("id")] // No need to use the same name as from themealdb
public string Id { get; set; }
[JsonPropertyName("name")]
public string Name { get; set; }
[JsonPropertyName("ingredients")]
public List<string> Ingredients { get; set; }
}
}
Now, to fetch, map and return the data in your controller action:
[HttpGet]
public async Task<IActionResult> GetAllRecipes()
{
var client = new RestClient($"https://www.themealdb.com/api/json/v1/1/search.php?s=");
var request = new RestRequest();
var response = await client.ExecuteAsync(request);
// Deserialize to the "TheMealDb" models
var mealList = JsonSerializer.Deserialize<TheMealDb.Models.Root>(response.Content);
// Map to your own models
var myMealList = mealDbList.meals?.Select(MapToInternal);
return Ok(myMealList);
}
// Map "TheMealDb" model to your own model
private Internal.Models.Meal MapToInternal(TheMealDb.Models.Meal externalMeal)
{
return new Internal.Models.Meal
{
Id = externalMeal.idMeal,
Name = externalMeal.strMeal,
Ingredients = new []
{
externalMeal.strIngredient1,
externalMeal.strIngredient2,
externalMeal.strIngredient3,
// ...
}
// Remove empty/null ingredients
.Where(ingr => !string.IsNullOrEmpty(ingr))
.ToList()
};
}
See the code in action.

Saving JSON to DataTable

I need to save data retrieved from API to a DataTable. JSON which is returned from API can't be deserialized directly to DataTable using this code:
DataTable dt = (DataTable)JsonConvert.DeserializeObject(json, (typeof(DataTable)));
I got an error: Unexpected JSON token when reading DataTable. I read that it's beacuse JSON format is not as it should be. Mine is as follows:
{
"page": 1,
"page_size": 1000,
"items": [
{
"id": "e1b019b9a8bf408c9cb964c29e845104",
"asset_id": "5adb0d87882b4e14b99bde74a967e84c",
"alias": "Concrete Pump Yellow",
"serial_number": "QEQ000123",
"model": {
"name": "Pump C50-HP"
},
"operating_hours": {
"hours": 100,
"unit_driven": true
}
}
]
}
I know I need format like [{..}] but can't find workaround, API returns JSON as above. I can deserialize it using this:
var obj = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject(json);
but how can I now add data to DataTable? I'm looking for a solution for it
What the JsonConvert class does is it materializes your string version of the response into an object. For this to work, your string version has to match the structure of the resulting object or the class needs hints to know how to inflate the object. The runtime is telling you that there is a mismatch and it doesn't know how to resolve it.
There are a few ways to get this done. I prefer an structured approach so I would recommend you create classes to receive the data:
var payload = #"{
""page"": 1,
""page_size"": 1000,
""items"": [
{
""id"": ""e1b019b9a8bf408c9cb964c29e845104"",
""asset_id"": ""5adb0d87882b4e14b99bde74a967e84c"",
""alias"": ""Concrete Pump Yellow"",
""serial_number"": ""QEQ000123"",
""model"": {
""name"": ""Pump C50-HP""
},
""operating_hours"": {
""hours"": 100,
""unit_driven"": true
}
}
]
}";
public class ApiResponse
{
[JsonProperty("page")]
public int Page { get; set; }
[JsonProperty("page_size")]
public int PageSize { get; set; }
[JsonProperty("items")]
public IEnumerable<ApiResponseItem> Items { get; set; }
}
public class ApiResponseItem
{
[JsonProperty("id")]
public string Id { get; set; }
[JsonProperty("asset_id")]
public string AssetId { get; set; }
[JsonProperty("alias")]
public string Alias { get; set; }
[JsonProperty("serial_number")]
public string SerialNumber { get; set; }
[JsonProperty("model")]
public ApiResponseModel Model { get; set; }
[JsonProperty("operating_hours")]
public ApiResponseOperatingHours OperatingHours { get; set; }
}
public class ApiResponseModel
{
[JsonProperty("name")]
public string Name { get; set; }
}
public class ApiResponseOperatingHours
{
[JsonProperty("hours")]
public string Hours { get; set; }
[JsonProperty("unit_driven")]
public bool UnitDriven { get; set; }
}
var response = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<ApiResponse>(payload);
As you can see, the classes use hint attributes to let the deserializer know about the fields. You can then loop through the response.Items enumerable and consume the items as desired.
UPDATE:
For posterity and at the suggestion of #mason, it's important to point out that there is no need to use a DataTable. A quick inspection of the payload reveals the output is a paged version of set of records so it's not equivalent to a data table.
Your issue here is that the json you're deserializing is not a DataTable, its just an Object.
JsonConvert.DeserializeObject(request, typeof(Object)) -> Where Object would be a defined Class with parameter definitions to deserialize the json to, i.e page, page_size, id etc..
Once in this format its fairly easy to coerce it into a DataTable:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/api/system.data.datatable?view=net-6.0
The Classes would look something along the lines of:
public class Items
{
public Guid? Id {get;set;}
public Guid? AssetId {get;set;}
public string alias {get;set;}
public string serial_number {get;set;}
public Model model {get;set;}
public OperatingHours operatingHours {get;set;}
}
public class Model
{
public string Name { get;set;}
}
public class OperatingHours
{
public int Hours {get;set;}
public bool Unit_Driven {get;set;}
}
public class OverallObject
{
public int Page {get;set;}
public int PageSize {get;set;}
public List<Items> AllItems {get;set;}
}

How Can I Deserialize JSON Data Using C#?

I have seen some other questions like this, but those are quite complex JSON data's that have objects within objects. Although the JSON I'm working with is never static, I doubt it's as complex as those. Also, it's my first time using JSON with C# so I'm a little clueless.
What I'm trying to achieve is to separate the data that is received from an API that I prompt using WebRequest in C#.
{
"johhny.debt": {
"id":35187540,
"name":"johnny.debt",
"profileIconId":786,
"Level":30,
"revisionDate":1428019045000
}
}
The returned JSON data is in a fashion like thereof.
I want to be able to access all of the properties of the above string in the following manner:
ID :
Name:
~~
~~
~~
... and so forth.
I'm assuming some type of class has to be made for this?
All help is appreciated, thank you all in advance.
Install Json.Net from Nuget
Install-Package Newtonsoft.Json
https://www.nuget.org/packages/Newtonsoft.Json/
Declare class for inner object ({"id":..., "name": ... }):
public class InnerObject
{
[JsonProperty("id")]
public int Id { get; set; }
[JsonProperty("name")]
public string Username { get; set; }
[JsonProperty("profileIconId")]
public int ProfileIconId { get; set; }
[JsonProperty("level")]
public int Level { get; set; }
[JsonProperty("revisionDate")]
public string RevisionDate { get; set; }
}
As you can see you can specify rename mapping from json fields to .Net object properties using JsonPropertyAttribute.
Read your json to Dictionary<string,InnerObject> and get value of "johhny.debt" key:
var dict = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<Dictionary<string, InnerObject>>(jsonText);
var johhny = dict["johhny.debt"];
Or if your need always to parse exact json property 'johhny.debt', you could create root object class:
public class RootObject
{
[JsonProperty("johhny.debt")]
public InnerObject JohhnyDept { get; set; }
}
And deserialize it:
var root = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<RootObject>(jsonText);
var johhny = root.JohhnyDebt;
Just Create a class like this
public class RootObject
{
public int Id { get; set; }
public string name { get; set; }
public int profileIconId { get; set; }
public int Level { get; set; }
public string revisionDate { get; set; }
}
then install json.Net and this code to your main method
var jsonObject=JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<RootObject>(jsonText);
That's all
Update
var obj = JObject.Parse(json);
var RootObject = new RootObject()
{
Id = (int)obj["johhny.debt"]["id"],
Level = (int)obj["johhny.debt"]["Level"],
name = (string)obj["johhny.debt"]["name"],
profileIconId = (int)obj["johhny.debt"]["profileIconId"],
revisionDate = (string)obj["johhny.debt"]["revisionDate"]
};

Using C# Properties and JSON

I have this issue where I'm sending a request for a JSON Feed. The issue is that the feed has a dynamic header (i.e. when I send a request for "testinput1" the header response will be testinput1.
Therefore I need to make my RootObject dynamic, but I'm not sure how, could you please help me?
I've entered the troublesome part of the code below
Deployment.Current.Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(() =>
{
textBlock1.Text = "Details Loaded.";
short_description.Text = feed.testinput1.short_description; // can I make testinput1 a constant? its based on code below
});
public class Event
{
public string description { get; set; }
public string datetime { get; set; }
}
public class TrackCode
{
public string short_description { get; set; }
public List<Event> events { get; set; }
}
public class RootObject
{
public string tracker;
public TrackCode testinput1// This needs to be based on user input each time
{
get; // Can I do something here to make sure that the "testinput1" changes each time?
set; // And create a constant that can be referred to?
}
}
Hopefully I can do something like this:
short_description.Text = feed.trackcode.short_description; // this is a constant
public class RootObject
{
public string tracker = "AB123456789NZ"; // This is the variable that changes
public TrackCode trackcode // this becomes a constant
{
get { return tracker; } // uses tracking number as value for JSON when it retrieves it
set { tracker = value;}
}
}
Where have I gone wrong? Thankyou!
