So here's the story:
Back in 2013 I was developing apps in Windows Phone 7.1/8 platform, using Visual Studio 2012. After some point I had all my apps published and eventually stopped working on them; then I formatted my PC and only kept copies of my VS2012 "Projects" folder.
Last week I received an email from Microsoft that one of my apps will be unpublished from the Marketplace due to non-compliance with specific articles. That's fair enough, so I wanted to edit the app and re-submit, so that I avoid getting my app unpublished.
I installed Visual Studio 2015 on my Windows 7 PC and copied the project folder into VS2015's "Projects". Then I tried to open the .sln file (which had been last edited back in 2014 in VS2012) and got a compatibility error, with the project and its files being listed as "unavailable" in the Solution Explorer.
I tried downloading VS2013 and installing that one instead, but I'm running Windows 7 and VS2013 won't install (requires later Windows version).
Has anyone of you faced a similar situation and if yes, how did you deal with it? I am desperate to create a new updated version of my app ASAP, as I don't want it to go off the Marketplace, but my hands are pretty much tied.
Thanks
You can not create or edit windows phone 7.1 projects in vs 2015. The last version of visual studio you could use was vs 2012. Here is a link to the windows phone 7.1 sdk which should install windows phone express
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=27570
and the update for windows phone 7.8

I have an Windows Embedded Compact v8.00 device installed with build 6247. FYI - This device is an Siemens HMI.
Now I'm looking for the right way to develop applications for this version of Windows. I started trying with Visual Studio 2008, so I build a very simple application with just a useless textbox. After copying the executable to the device I start tried to run the test applications but nothing happens.
After searching the web I found out it's better to install Visual Studio 2015 PRO with an application builder from Microsoft's website.
Is this the right way to do? What else does I need to know when developing applications for Windows Compact 2013?
To create applications for Windows Embedded Compact 2013 you need VS2013 or VS2015 professional with the Application Builder plugin and a valid SDK installed on your PC.
If you develop managed apps you also need to check in the .NET runtime is already part of the image or find a way to deploy and install it permanently on your device (the way to do this may change depending on the device configuration, registry type etc.)
I am creating a Xamarin project, and I made it working with Android and iOS, but I can't figure out how to start the Windows Phone 8.1 emulator.
Windows Phone 8.1 is created as a project just like the other platforms.
I am running Visual Studio 2015 Community and Xamarin Business.
EDIT
I made it running by setting it as startup project, but are there others way by e.g. changing the project (where you choose if it is debug or release)?
I also want to know, how I can create the application to Windows store
To create app package go to
Project->Store->Create App Package - It will open wizard for creating app package that You are able to send to store (reference: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh975357.aspx)
As for the other ways:
In Visual Studio 2015 You can choose in taskbar: debug/release, CPU architecture, startup project and where to deploy an app - eg. emulator or device
I am trying to create sample application for Windows 8 Embedded Handheld or Windows Store App, for that I have following configuration.
Configuration:
1. Windows 8 64Bit OS
2. Visual Studio 2012 Express Edition With Update 4 Installed
3. Windows Phone 8 SDK, Downloaded From This Link.
4. Windows 8 Embedded Handheld SDK, Downloaded From This Link.
But when I start my Visual Studio I don't see any option for Creating Windows Store App as Given in This video.
Also I am not able to see installed Windows 8 Phone SDK and W8EH SDK in, about screen of the Visual Studio 2012.
UPDATE
It will be very helpful if we have list of all the supported versions of Visual Studio with there targeted use, like for Desktop/Mobile(or 'Phone' it is also one more confusion)/Handheld/Embedded/Store, else it is very confusing for the beginners to decide which version of Visual Studio to use for development of Embedded/Handheld Application development.
You have the wrong edition of VS Express. You have the edition for Windows Desktop, which is for creating traditional Windows desktop applications. You need the edition for Windows, which is for creating Store apps that target the Modern UI.
I have created a Metro application, but I did not yet send it to Windows Store as it's still in beta. One of my friends was interested in testing my application. To install my application on hes computer I used sideloading, following the steps in this article : http://blogs.msdn.com/b/patricka/archive/2012/11/05/how-do-i-deploy-a-windows-8-app-to-another-device-for-testing.aspx . The problem is that, when a press "Y" (yes) and PowerShell should install my app, it gives an error "The package or bundle is not signed or it's digital signature is corrupted. ". What should I do ? I sent him all the files that were generated by the Visual Studio.
I have to mention that :
I'm using Windows 8.1
I've developed the app in Visual Studio 2013 Professional
The target platform of my app is Windows 8.1 (and I have no idea how to change this)
My friend does not have Visual Studio installed
My friend uses Windows Server 2012 Datacenter (Could
this be the problem ? What should I do in this case ? I'm very
interested that my app to work also on Windows 8, Windows Server 2012
because this are the OS-es that are used at my office and by a
majority of the people with whom I work and that could test my app
before releasing it to the market. )
EDIT : I tried to follow the steps in this article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/jj835836(v=vs.85).aspx , but my error does not appear to be listed there.
In AppxPackagingOM > Microsoft-Windows-AppxPackaging/Operational I have the next error:
error 0xC00CE014: App manifest validation error:
The app manifest must be valid as per schema: Line 27, Column 8, Reason: Element
'{http://schemas.microsoft.com/appx/2013/manifest}VisualElements' is unexpected according
to content model of parent element '{http://schemas.microsoft.com/appx/2010/manifest}Application'.
Expecting: {http://schemas.microsoft.com/appx/2010/manifest}VisualElements.
Also in AppXDeployment-Server > Microsoft-Windows-AppXDeploymentServer/Operational I have no errors.
After reading your question again, I see the obvious solution.
The target platform of my app is Windows 8.1 (and I have no idea how
to change this)
...
My friend uses Windows Server 2012 Datacenter
You need to target Windows 8 to make it run on 8/2012. And if you check out MSDN, you'll see:
If you want to create a Windows 8 version of your app, you must use
Microsoft Visual Studio 2012.
Please make sure you have created beta app package in release mode not in debug mode. This is wrong from here.
Also check out Can Windows Server 2012 run all Metro (/ Windows Store) applications?
Ok, here's my issue - rather simple, though I'm not sure how to go about it (and avoid downloading tens of unnecessary gigabytes).
I've downloaded and installed "Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows Phone" (wpsdkv80_enu1).
I'm wondering what I should download/install in order to fully support development of Desktop apps, or plain Windows 8 applications. (apart from Windows phone, I mean).
Any ideas? (preferably with links?)
With Visual Studio Express products, there's one Visual Studio for each kind of application:
Windows Phone
Desktop
Windows 8 Store
Web
So you have to install multiple Visual Studio Express, using different versions.
For desktop: Express 2012 for Windows Desktop
See http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/eng/products/visual-studio-express-products#product-express-summary
You're going to have to download a new ISO (or two). Just make VERY sure you download the right ISO. There is one for Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows 8, which allows you to develop Windows Store apps and you need a developer account and license for it. There's ALSO a Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows Desktop, which allows you to develop applications like on Windows 7.
