Unable to await method in ASP.NET (4.6) MVC5 project - c#

I'm currently seeing a problem whereby my await method is just hanging, and causing the response to just hang, not doing anything until I kill the request. This is evident in both Chrome debug tools and Fiddler.
I have the following API action defined:

When I step through that code in debug mode for a unit test for the GetWithinState action, the IList<Place> places = await _placeManager.GetPlacesInState(state); method runs without exception, however I am not able to hover over the places variable to inspect it, nothing happens. Nor can I add it to the watch list, I get the following message:
error CS0103: The name 'places' does not exist in the current context
Interestingly however, if I run the exact same code within a "PlaceManager" unit test, outside of the Web API project, the test runs fine, and I can inspect the places variable.

Does anyone have any idea why this may be occurring within the API method, but is working fine in unit tests?

As mentioned by Alexei Levenkov above, I was causing a deadlock using the getDataAsync().Result code.
While mapping my Place object to a MapPlaceDTO object, the Place object has a get property to load the place type, which would call an async function in the following way:

Entity Framework returns Points = 0 although in the db it is not 0

I'm working on a game, where players can get points, and players can earn points that are saved in my database. I have one method that looks like this:

In the first method everything works as it should but at the second "oldteam" suddenly returns that points = 0 although I can see in the database that it is not 0, how is this possible, I use the same method put it fetches a 0 where there isn't any. All the other variables that are returned from the db to "oldteam" are correct it is just the points that suddenly are zero.
Does anyone know what is going on?

As mentioned in the comments, the SaveChangesAsync isn't awaited, but more importantly, this code doesn't update the team in the database. You are loading the existing team, but then simply overwriting the in-memory reference. That doesn't copy values across. Instead:

Key changes to consider here. Assert the passed in state early and handle if it's invalid. If you expect 1 team to be found, use Single rather than First, and if an entry is expected, don't use the OrDefault variations. Those should be used only if you expect that an item might not be found. Once we have the existing data record, copy the values that can change across and call SaveChanges, awaiting the async operation.
This code will throw exceptions if expected state isn't valid, but it will throw meaningful exceptions to be handled at an appropriate level. (Rather than less descriptive exceptions when assumptions aren't met, or failing silently.)

Block Controller Method while already running

I have a controller which returns a large json object. If this object does not exist, it will generate and return it afterwards. The generation takes about 5 seconds, and if the client sent the request multiple times, the object gets generated with x-times the children. So my question is: Is there a way to block the second request, until the first one finished, independent who sent the request?
Normally I would do it with a Singleton, but because I am having scoped services, singleton does not work here
Warning: this is very oppinionated and maybe not suitable for Stack Overflow, but here it is anyway
Although I'll provide no code... when things take a while to generate, you don't usually spend that time directly in controller code, but do something like "start a background task to generate the result, and provide a "task id", which can be queried on another different call).
So, my preferred course of action for this would be having two different controller actions:
Generate, which creates the background job, assigns it some id, and returns the id
GetResult, to which you pass the task id, and returns either different error codes for "job id doesn't exist", "job id isn't finished", or a 200 with the result.
This way, your clients will need to call both, however, in Generate, you can check if the job is already being created and return an existing job id.
This of course moves the need to "retry and check" to your client: in exchange, you don't leave the connection to the server opened during those 5 seconds (which could potentially be multiplied by a number of clients) and return fast.
Otherwise, if you don't care about having your clients wait for a response during those 5 seconds, you could do a simple:

So you basically make other clients wait till the first one generates the result, with "almost" no CPU load on the server... however with a connection open and a thread from the threadpool used, so I just DO NOT recommend this :-)
PS: #Leaky solution above is also good, but it also shifts the responsability to retry to the client, and if you are going to do that, I'd probably go directly with a "background job id", instead of having the first (the one that generates the result) one take 5 seconds. IMO, if it can be avoided, no API action should ever take 5 seconds to return :-)
Do you have an example for Interlocked.CompareExchange?
Sure. I'm definitely not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to multi-threading stuff, but this is quite simple (as you might know, Interlocked has no support for bool, so it's customary to represent it with an integral type):

I think it's the safest if you use it like this, with a 'Try' method, which tries to set the value and tells you if it was already set, in an atomic way.
Besides simply adding this (I mean just the field and the methods) to your existing component, you can also use it as a separate component, injected from the IOC container as scoped. Or even injected as a singleton, and then you don't have to use a static field.
Storing state like this should be good for as long as the application is running, but if the hosted application is recycled due to inactivity, it's obviously lost. Though, that won't happen while a request is still processing, and definitely won't happen in 5 seconds.
(And if you wanted to synchronize between app service instances, you could 'quickly' save a flag to the database, in a transaction with proper isolation level set. Or use e.g. Azure Redis Cache.)

Of course possibly you'd want to extract the 'blocking' logic from the controller action into somewhere else, for example an action filter. In that case the flag should also go into a separate component that could be shared between the query service and the filter.

I felt bad about my inelegant solution above, and I realized that this problem can be generalized into basically a connection number limiter on an endpoint.

How does one set a variable in a command using Mediatr with Moq?

I have a simple functional style test for output of a command that I've written using Mediatr's IRequest and IRequestHandler<>

Since this command runs as a background task, I don't want it interrupted. I have a variable, submerchantList, that is of type List<T> which is used in a foreach loop to do work. The work is set in a try-catch because I don't want the command interrupted, as I stated before. I want to test the output of the what is written to my logs (_log.info) if an exception is thrown during this process.

SOLUTION:
Here was the solution: Stubbing the database call by injecting an in-memory DbSet. I used this resource learn.microsoft.com/en-us/ef/ef6/fundamentals/testing/… This issue was db call.ToList It looked something like this _db.Table.Include(x => x.Foreign).Where(x => x.Foreign.Field == Enum.Value).ToListAsync() While I was setting up the Mock DbSet, I had to use the string version, not the LINQ-chain version in the unit test. So, that means mockDbset.Setup(x => x.Table.Include("Foreign")).Returns(myCustomDbSet); Hope that helps someone!

VS2017 doesn't give details for an exception, just crashed with null

I'm working on a UWP project and there's something funky going on with how errors are being presented to me. I don't know if it's VS2017 or how UWP is set up.
I have a piece of code that goes online and retrieves json content, sometimes the code works and sometimes it doesn't. It works when I use Expander control from UWP Community toolkit, and fails when I want to switch to GridView. When it doesn't work, it fails on GetStringAsync method of HttpClient. The strange behavior is that the exception isn't thrown in the method where the problem occurs, the code actually redirects me back without giving an error and as soon as it gets to the property that's supposed to have a value that isn't null, I get a null exception.
This is where the problem happens:

This piece of code is called from within the view model. It starts with a constructor and RefreshServerKanesWrathDataAsync is the method where json is parsed.

The second I get to GetStringAsync, the code just goes back to the constructor like nothing happened, however the method never completes, it just exits back to the constructor, and therefore fails to update observable collections with data. I then get a null exception.
I wanted to test this with VS2015, but I updated some controls that are apparently only supported withing VS2017, so I can't run the code in other versions.
I also ran into an issue with the code prior to this problem, where I tried to access files in a directory without using a token. The behavior was exactly the same, the code wasn't telling me that I didn't have access to the directory I wanted to read, it was just throwing me out of the method back into the location that made the call to read the directory. Just like with the current problem, I would then run into a null exception, which wasn't where the main problem was.
I added Template10 and UWP community toolkit to the project, if that matters.
You shouldn't call an async method from a constructor unless you're willing to provide a callback.

On a side note, you may also need to have Visual Studio 2017 break when any exception is thrown. In VS2017, go to Debug->Windows->Exception Settings and make sure Common Language Runtime Exceptions has a check. If it has a filled box, click the box until it turns into a checkmark.
Also..., you can tap into an event raised when any task has an unobserved exception. You can do so in the constructor of App.xaml.cs

Let me continue by explaining that the delivery object has 2 children; DeliveryTime and DeliveryDay. The issue that arises happens when I try to remove one deliveryTime and modify nothing else. The end result of running the code normally (not in debug) is that the deliveryTime is in fact not removed. Here's the interesting thing guys, when I debug it and go through the break points, everything works as expected!

The code above is obviously generic, and it handles all my entity objects. I have tested it in and out and know for sure the problem does not lie in there. I thought it would be helpful to post it so you all can have a full understanding of what's going on.
Here's my best guess as to what's going on:
The reference to the removed deliveryTime still exists when the database context is saved, but when I debug, the system has enough time to remove the context.
Here was one of my attempted solutions:
Remove all references to the children objects immediately after setting currentDays and currentTimes and then proceeding to add them back to deliveryInDb as you enumerate through them.
Because I am new to all of this, if you see some bad practice along with the solution, I wouldn't mind constructive criticism to improve my programming method.
I actually encountered this issue in a project at work. The project is an older MVC4 project using EF 6.1.
In our situation, a simple update attempting to set a related entity property to null was failing to actually set it to null while running the web app normally (in debug mode). When setting a break point on the line of code that sets the property to null the database would be updated as expected, though. So, the update was working when a break point was in place but not working when allowed to run normally.
Using an EF interceptor, we could see that, with the break point in place, the update query was going through as expected.
Now, in our situation the related entity was using the virtual keyword to allow for lazy loading. I think this is the root of the issue. When a break point is present, EF has enough time to both lazily load that related entity and evaluate whatever it needs to evaluate and finally set it to null. When running without a break point, I think EF gets caught up trying to lazily load that entity and therefore fails to think it needs to be updated. To be clear, I was both accessing the related entity property for the first time and setting it null using a one-liner of code.
foo.Bar = null;
I resolved this issue, in our scenario, by accessing that property at least once prior to setting it to null so that EF is forced to load it. With it loaded, setting it to null seems to work as intended now. So again, to be clear, I think the issue is a combo of lazy loading and the one-liner of code both accessing that property for the first time and assigning it to null.
It appears that you're using multiple instances of your DbContext, which are not synchronized.
The solution would be to use a single instance, and pass that instance between your methods.
