Does basedOn inherit visual states as well? - c#

I am creating multiple buttons with a custom template. Each button is binded to a different thumbnail image, but I want them to all have the same visual state. I created customButtonStyle style and each other button will inherit from this style. It seems however that the visual states are not inherited from customButtonStyle.
Any ideas on why it won't inherit the visuals states? and how would I set each button to its own thumbnail?
Thanks in advance.
Here is my code below:

No. As you can see for yourself, the visual states reside in the control template, and you're providing a whole new one.
You can try to place the states as resources and references them from each template, but I would advise against it. Since you have two separate templates they are likely to fork at some stage, in which reuse won't be an option. IMHO it's best to just copy them. Would make life easier in Blend as well.

Create Round Button with Border IN UWP Windows 10 C#

I am trying to create a round button, with a White Border and a Transparent Background (as the old AppBarButtons in Windows 8.1) in UWP Windows 10.
I have found several samples like these:
https://comentsys.wordpress.com/2015/05/23/windows-10-universal-windows-platform-custom-button/
https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/cda7a526-5e99-4d4a-a73c-0be4ce77f961/uwpwindows10-how-to-make-button-with-round-edges?forum=wpdevelop&prof=required
But the problem is with the Border.
When I setting the BorderBrush to a certain color, it turns out the Border is for Button's "Rectangle".
Is there a way I can create a Round border for a button?
Are you looking for something like this?
<StackPanel>
<Button Background="Transparent">
<StackPanel>
<Border CornerRadius="10"
Background="Transparent"
BorderBrush="White"
BorderThickness="3">
<TextBlock Text="MyButton"
Margin="10"
Foreground="White"/>
</Border>
</StackPanel>
</Button>
</StackPanel>
There are few ways to achieve this, one by using a style can look like this - remove BorderBrush from ContentPresenter and add an Ellipse with that brush. Sample in XAML:
<Page.Resources>
<Style x:Key="CircleButtonStyle" TargetType="Button">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="{ThemeResource SystemControlBackgroundBaseLowBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{ThemeResource SystemControlForegroundBaseHighBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="{ThemeResource SystemControlForegroundTransparentBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="{ThemeResource ButtonBorderThemeThickness}"/>
<Setter Property="Padding" Value="8,4,8,4"/>
<Setter Property="HorizontalAlignment" Value="Left"/>
<Setter Property="VerticalAlignment" Value="Center"/>
<Setter Property="FontFamily" Value="{ThemeResource ContentControlThemeFontFamily}"/>
<Setter Property="FontWeight" Value="Normal"/>
<Setter Property="FontSize" Value="{ThemeResource ControlContentThemeFontSize}"/>
<Setter Property="UseSystemFocusVisuals" Value="True"/>
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="Button">
<Grid x:Name="RootGrid">
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Normal">
<Storyboard>
<PointerUpThemeAnimation Storyboard.TargetName="RootGrid"/>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
<VisualState x:Name="PointerOver">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Fill" Storyboard.TargetName="BorderCircle">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{ThemeResource SystemControlHighlightBaseMediumLowBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground" Storyboard.TargetName="ContentPresenter">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{ThemeResource SystemControlHighlightBaseHighBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<PointerUpThemeAnimation Storyboard.TargetName="RootGrid"/>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
<VisualState x:Name="Pressed">

</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground" Storyboard.TargetName="ContentPresenter">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{ThemeResource SystemControlHighlightBaseHighBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<PointerDownThemeAnimation Storyboard.TargetName="RootGrid"/>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
<VisualState x:Name="Disabled">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Fill" Storyboard.TargetName="BorderCircle">

</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground" Storyboard.TargetName="ContentPresenter">

</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>

</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>

<Ellipse x:Name="BorderCircle" Stroke="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" StrokeThickness="2"/>

</Style>
</Page.Resources>
<Grid Background="{ThemeResource ApplicationPageBackgroundThemeBrush}">
<Button Content="text" Width="50" Height="50" BorderBrush="Blue" Style="{StaticResource CircleButtonStyle}"/>
</Grid>
I've also made some changes in VisualStates so that it doesn't look weird once clicked/disabled.
I don't know if the OP is still interested in rounded corner buttons, but for sake of completeness I think it may be helpful for other users to point out, as the user peterincumbria said, that for the lastest build of Windows 10 (1809) there is a new property in the class Control: CornerRadius. So now the following code is enough:
<Button Content="DEMO"
Background="Transparent"
BorderThickness="1.0"
BorderBrush="White"
CornerRadius="10"
HorizontalAlignment="Center"
VerticalAlignment="Center"/>
Put this inside a Grid and we have a rounded corner button in the middle of the Page.
With version 1809 and later (even if you're targeting an earlier version like me below) you can just do this for an example of a round button:
<Button
Content="Stuff"
Windows10version1809:CornerRadius="90,90,90,90"
Height="64"
Width="64">
</Button>
and voila!
Make sure to add this at the top of your XAML with the other xmlns stuff.
xmlns:Windows10version1809="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation?IsApiContractPresent(Windows.Foundation.UniversalApiContract, 7)"

The approach I just used was to simply add CornerRadius to the "RootGrid" grid in the Button template.

How To Change Button Style?

I have this button:
<Button HorizontalAlignment="Stretch" Content="EXIT" Style="{StaticResource RedButton}" />
and its style:
<Style x:Key="RedButton" TargetType="Button">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Red" />
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="Button">
<Grid>
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Pressed">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="Border" Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="Red" />
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
</VisualStateGroup>
</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
</Grid>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
But all it does it complain, on the button: "Cannot resolve TargetName Border"
I'm trying to style the pressed visual state for the button. Does anyone know whats wrong?
Try the following link for customization of your button using a ControlTemplate: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc903963%28v=vs.95%29.aspx
In your XAML code In the Pressed State you are trying to modify a target called Border. The problem is that in your grid there is no such element. There is not border added to the grid nor there is a property called border available for a grid. And when you go to edit current template, it only shows a grid. There are nothing inside the grid. My advice is to discard the current style and create a new one. No need to mess with XAML because you can easily get this done using Blend for VS.
Try this tutorial, Explains from beginning to end how to customize a Button Style.
http://wpdevkvk.wordpress.com/2014/07/17/custom-xaml-controllers-i-adding-custom-styles-to-elements/
There's obviously no Border element to apply the color to.
What happens if you create a style like this one:
<Style x:Key="RedButtonStyle" TargetType="Button">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="{StaticResource PhoneBorderThickness}"/>
<Setter Property="FontFamily" Value="{StaticResource PhoneFontFamilySemiBold}"/>
<Setter Property="FontSize" Value="{StaticResource PhoneFontSizeMedium}"/>
<Setter Property="Padding" Value="10,5,10,6"/>
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="Button">
<Grid Background="Transparent">
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Normal"/>
<VisualState x:Name="MouseOver"/>
<VisualState x:Name="Pressed">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground" Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="Red" />
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
<VisualState x:Name="Disabled">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground" Storyboard.TargetName="ContentContainer">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneDisabledBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="BorderBrush" Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneDisabledBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background" Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="Transparent"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
</VisualStateGroup>
</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<Border x:Name="ButtonBackground" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" CornerRadius="0" Margin="{StaticResource PhoneTouchTargetOverhang}">
<ContentControl x:Name="ContentContainer" ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding ContentTemplate}" Content="{TemplateBinding Content}" Foreground="{TemplateBinding Foreground}" HorizontalContentAlignment="{TemplateBinding HorizontalContentAlignment}" Padding="{TemplateBinding Padding}" VerticalContentAlignment="{TemplateBinding VerticalContentAlignment}"/>
</Border>
</Grid>

</Setter.Value>
</Setter>

My TextBox vanishes when I add a VisualState

I try to use Visual States in a Windows Phone 8 application (C#-XAML). The screen is dark. Here is the style I defined in App.xaml:
<Style x:Key="StyleDeBaseTextBox" TargetType="TextBox">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent"/>
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="White"/>
<Setter Property="SelectionBackground" Value="{StaticResource PhoneAccentBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="SelectionForeground" Value="{StaticResource PhoneBackgroundBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="InputScope" Value="Text"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="Transparent"/>
<Setter Property="Height" Value="40px"/>
</Style>
It works, but when the TextBox has the focus, its background becomes white. As the foreground color remains white, you can't read what you write. So, I added this property, but the result is that my TextBox disappears (though I get no error message):
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="TextBox">
<Grid>
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Normal"/>
<VisualState x:Name="Disabled"/>
<VisualState x:Name="PointerOver"/>
<VisualState x:Name="ButtonVisible"/>
<VisualState x:Name="ButtonCollapsed"/>
<VisualState x:Name="Focused">
<Storyboard>
<DoubleAnimation Storyboard.TargetName="TextBox" Storyboard.TargetProperty="BorderBrush" To="Green" Duration="0"/>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
</VisualStateGroup>
</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
</Grid>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
TextBox vanishes because you override its ControlTemplate and doesn't provide any content host.
Copy the default template of TextBox from MSDN and change the StoryBoard as per your needs.
Anyhow this is ControlTemplate which you can use. It also change border brush to green on focus. Hope this is what you want:
<ControlTemplate TargetType="TextBoxBase">
<Border BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding Border.BorderThickness}"
BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding Border.BorderBrush}"
Background="{TemplateBinding Panel.Background}"

Windows Phone 8 Button text animation - C# / XAML

I'm trying to animate the text inside a Button object so it would look like this Android boot text.
Does anyone know how or if it's even possible to do this on Windows Phone?
Thanks for your time.
I think this is the very solution you were searching for, I might be wrong but according to my studies and experience this is what I have made for you.
First of all edit a button control, in that I have created the story board and animated the content, then I used control story board action behavior to call that story board on Loaded trigger.
Here is the XAML of my edited Button including the story board I created.
<Style x:Key="animatedText" TargetType="Button">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="{StaticResource PhoneBorderThickness}"/>
<Setter Property="FontFamily" Value="{StaticResource PhoneFontFamilySemiBold}"/>
<Setter Property="FontSize" Value="{StaticResource PhoneFontSizeMedium}"/>
<Setter Property="Padding" Value="10,5,10,6"/>
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="Button">
<Grid Background="Transparent">
<Grid.Resources>
<Storyboard x:Name="Storyboard1" RepeatBehavior="Forever">
<DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="(UIElement.Opacity)" Storyboard.TargetName="ContentContainer">
<EasingDoubleKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="0"/>
<EasingDoubleKeyFrame KeyTime="0:0:0.3" Value="1"/>
<EasingDoubleKeyFrame KeyTime="0:0:0.7" Value="0"/>
<EasingDoubleKeyFrame KeyTime="0:0:1" Value="1"/>
</DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</Grid.Resources>
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Normal"/>
<VisualState x:Name="MouseOver"/>
<VisualState x:Name="Pressed">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground" Storyboard.TargetName="ContentContainer">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneButtonBasePressedForegroundBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background" Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneAccentBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
<VisualState x:Name="Disabled">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground" Storyboard.TargetName="ContentContainer">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneDisabledBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="BorderBrush" Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="{StaticResource PhoneDisabledBrush}"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background" Storyboard.TargetName="ButtonBackground">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame KeyTime="0" Value="Transparent"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
</VisualStateGroup>
</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<i:Interaction.Triggers>
<i:EventTrigger>
<eim:ControlStoryboardAction Storyboard="{StaticResource Storyboard1}"/>
</i:EventTrigger>
</i:Interaction.Triggers>
<Border x:Name="ButtonBackground" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" CornerRadius="0" Margin="{StaticResource PhoneTouchTargetOverhang}">
<ContentControl x:Name="ContentContainer" ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding ContentTemplate}" Content="{TemplateBinding Content}" Foreground="{TemplateBinding Foreground}" HorizontalContentAlignment="{TemplateBinding HorizontalContentAlignment}" Padding="{TemplateBinding Padding}" VerticalContentAlignment="{TemplateBinding VerticalContentAlignment}"/>
</Border>
</Grid>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
Hope this is your solution.
Happy Coding!

Setting visual elements of a silverlight control from codebehind?

I'm working on a button control in silverlight which can be in various states. Each state has its own look, different colours and even different images on the button.
I was wondering how I could modify the visual properties of the control from codebehind?
Here's the xaml:
<Style x:Key="MyButton" TargetType="Button">
<Setter Property="FontSize" Value="10"/>
<Setter Property="Height" Value="22"/>
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="White"/>
<Setter Property="VerticalAlignment" Value="Center"/>
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="Button">
<Grid Name="RootElement">
<vsm:VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<vsm:VisualStateGroup x:Name="CommonStates">
<vsm:VisualState x:Name="Normal"/>
<vsm:VisualState x:Name="MouseOver">
</vsm:VisualState>
<vsm:VisualState x:Name="Pressed">
<Storyboard>
<DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames BeginTime="00:00:00" Duration="00:00:01.0010000" Storyboard.TargetName="border" Storyboard.TargetProperty="(UIElement.RenderTransform). (TransformGroup.Children)[0].(ScaleTransform.ScaleX)">
<SplineDoubleKeyFrame KeyTime="00:00:00" Value="0.94"/>
</DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames BeginTime="00:00:00" Duration="00:00:01.0010000" Storyboard.TargetName="border" Storyboard.TargetProperty="(UIElement.RenderTransform). (TransformGroup.Children)[0].(ScaleTransform.ScaleY)">
<SplineDoubleKeyFrame KeyTime="00:00:00" Value="0.94"/>
</DoubleAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</vsm:VisualState>
<vsm:VisualState x:Name="Disabled">
<Storyboard/>
</vsm:VisualState>
</vsm:VisualStateGroup>
<vsm:VisualStateGroup x:Name="FocusStates">
<vsm:VisualState x:Name="Focused">
<Storyboard/>
</vsm:VisualState>
<vsm:VisualState x:Name="Unfocused"/>
</vsm:VisualStateGroup>
</vsm:VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<Border CornerRadius="1,1,1,1" Background="{StaticResource BlueVerticalGradientBrush}" BorderBrush="Red" BorderThickness="1,1,1,1" x:Name="MouseOver" RenderTransformOrigin="0.5,0.5">
<Border.RenderTransform>
<TransformGroup>
<ScaleTransform/>
<SkewTransform/>
<RotateTransform/>
<TranslateTransform/>
</TransformGroup>
</Border.RenderTransform>
<ContentPresenter x:Name="contentPresenter" Margin="10,0,10,0" ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding ContentTemplate}" VerticalAlignment="Center" HorizontalAlignment="Center"/>
</Border>
</Grid>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
<Setter Property="MinWidth" Value="65"/>
</Style>
Have you tried giving the element and x:Name and accessing properties in code behind with the name?
You may want to look into using the VisualStateManager.GoToState or the VisualStateManager.GoToElementState Methods. I am not aware personally of a method to modify a style that is defined in the xaml.
