C# Script output in aspx page - c#

I am having issues with the output of my C# script embedded in my asp.net code. The output is generated after clicking a submit button for a web form. This web form is at the top of the page. The output, when clicking submit, is currently being placed above the web form which is in turn pushing the web form underneath it. I would like the opposite to happen. I want it to output below my web form. The way I generate output from my script is as follows:
Response.Write("<p>");
foreach(obj in arr){
Response.Write(obj);
}
Response.Write("</p>");
Also if it matters, I initialize the script with runat="server". The script gets called when the user selects "submit" near the web form. Thanks in advance. I've been trying to format this thing for quite some time now.

You would be better off putting a 'literal' object in the place on your page precisely where where you want the result to appear, and then, instead of spitting out HTML with response.write, you assign the desired text to the literal in your code-behind.
Like this:
<html>
<p>
<asp:Literal ID="ltlTest" runat="server"></asp:Literal>
</p>
</html>
and then in your code behind:
ltlTest.Text = "the string you want to show...";
You can include html tags in the string assignment, though generally I try not to.

You've got some choices.
You can make arr a public property, and then use <% foreach (var obj in arr) Response.Write(obj); %> directly in the page markup where you want it.
You can put in an <asp:Literal runat="server" ID="Literal1"> control and then set Literal1.Text = ... in your code. This achieves the same, but with ViewState (so the value is persisted on postbacks).
If you'd like the result to be rendered within <span /> tags, you can use an <asp:Label /> control. This is usually the best choice for displaying messages to the user.

How would I let 1 .aspx page use another .aspx page's code?

I have 2 aspx files in my project. The first.aspx page has some content on it and when I click on a button, it will launch a frame (second.aspx that only has code to show a calendar) on the same page.
Now once that calendar(second.aspx) loads on first.aspx, I want to click a link on the calendar that will .show() a hidden DIV on the first.aspx page.
How do I access code cross pages? In other words, how can I write some code in second.aspx that will affect first.aspx.
What you're asking for is not really possible. You're probably approaching it the wrong way. What you should do is turn your calendar page into a user control so that it can be used seamlessly in first.aspx.
Here is how to get started with user controls in asp.net:
After you turn it into a user control there are different approaches to getting access to the properties of the user control from your page. Here is one approach using the FindControl method.
Hope that helps.
The easiest solution would be to show and hide your div with jquery. Simple give your div a class like:
<div class="myCalendarDiv" style="display:none" />
And your Button should look like this:
<asp:Button id="myButton" OnClientClick="return ShowCalendar();" runat="server" />
<script type="text/javascript">
function ShowCalendar() {
$(".myCalendarDiv").show();
return false;
}
</script>
Another way would be instead of creating a seprate webpage for the calendar, as proposed you can use a jquery dialog, or make a usercontrol and embedd it on the same page.
(Posted on behalf of the OP).
So since I was dealing with an Iframe, I found out that you can target the parent window which would be first.aspx.
I used "window.parent.MYFUNCTION();" to call my JavaScript function on first.aspx and show the div.

ASP.NET dynamically generate HTML with server controls

When i need to set some value to a Javacript, or any other part of the code, i usually use this:
<script>
<%# SomeFunction() %>
</script>
And this also works for HTML in the document body, like...
<somehtmltag property="<%# SomeFunction2() %>">
And in the code behind i create the function that returns a string, with all the necessary code.
If i add some parameter to a user control like:
<ts:PeopleCard ID="us" runat="server" Visible="<%# IsVisivle() %>" />
It also works, but i try to create the entire user control it does not work.
<%# AddUserControl() %>
Function AddUserControl() as String
Return "<ts:PeopleCard ID=""us"" runat=""server"" Visible=""true"" />"
End Function
I understand that this does not work, because this code must be processed by the server to be converted in the actual code.
The final HTML, it shows:
<ts:PeopleCard ID="us" runat="server" Visible="true" />
when it shouldn't, it should show the processed HTML\css by the server.
So my question is, is it possible to create a control this way? Is it possible to force ASP.NET to "re-process" the page, after I changed its contents in code behind?
I understand there's several other ways to do it. Including, creating the user control in conde behind.
But i need to know, if is possible to do this way...
Usually you have a parent tag that is runat server and you can then add your own object to it.
Dim newTag as New PeopleCard
newTag.Visible = true
pnl.Controls.Add(newTag)
An other option I've done is the past is to add a RenderMethod to a control. Each control have a SetRenderMethodDelegate function and it allows you to write directly to the HtmlTextWriter. This won't create an object for the controls you create yourself.

c# asp.net response.write shrinks text boxes

I have a Web Form project I am developing C# ASP.Net 4.5. I have a class that calls a response.write to display a message for user input validation purposes. The call to response.write is made inside the class in a method from creating a new instance of the class, thus the class method, by pressing a button on the form. But using the response.write causes the textboxes on my page to shrink considerably. Then when I press a different button the textboxes go back to normal. It only happens when I use response.write. Any help would be appreciated. Code call in class method:
HttpContext.Current.Response.Write("File not found");
By using that you're simply dumping text to the top of the page, typically outside of the <html> tags. This can have a knock-on effect to the rest of the pages style; i see the same when i am spitting out test responses.
Instead, put yourself a label control on your page and populate that instead. you can put it exactly where you want and simply call:
So put this: <asp:Label runat="Server" id="myLabel" /> where you want the message to appear.
Then in your code-behind, write this. It will populate the label with the given text.
myLabel.Text = "File not found";
The Label control will be rendered as a <span></span> - so styling it is nice and easy.
If you fancied using a <div> then use the Panel control.
If you're not fussed about any sort of style, go for a Literal control, which renders no html elements.
When you use the HttpContext.Current.Response.Write on code behind is direct send to the page your text, at any random point of page render.
Maybe on top, maybe on bottom, on some point that you can not control if you use the code behind to call it.
Change the way you show your message, at a minimum you can use a literal control to render there your output and show it.
You may want to use a control to display your error. For example:
In the aspx/ascx
<asp:Label id="ErrorMessage" runat="server" />
in the page/control code behind
//call TheClass
TheClass c = new TheClass();
string error = c.TheMethod();
if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(error))
{
ErrorMessage.Text = error;
}
in TheClass
public class TheClass
{
public string TheMethod()
{
string result = "";
...
//When file is not found
result = "File not found";
...
return result;
}
}

Invalid ViewState when using jQuery tabs

I have a fairly simple page with a set of jQuery tabs, the content of some is called via ajax. I also have a search box in the masterpage in my header.
When I open the tabbed page the search box works fine. However once I have clicked on one of the ajax tabs the search box fails to work with an "Invalid Viewstate" yellow screen of death.
I believe this is because the ajax page is replacing the __VIEWSTATE hidden input with its own.
How can I stop this behaviour?
UPDATE: I have noticed that the YSOD only appears in IE and Chrome, Firefox doesn't seem to have the same issue. Although how the browser influences the ViewState, I'm not sure.
UPDATE: I've put a cut down version of the site that shows the issue here: http://dropbox.com/s/7wqgjqqdorgp958/stackoverflow.zip
The reason of such behavior is that you getting content of the ajaxTab.aspx page asynchronously and paste it into another aspx page. So you getting two instances of hidden fields with __VIEWSTATE name and when page posted back to server theirs values are mixing (might depends on how browser process multiple controls with same name on submit). To resolve this you can put second tab's content into a frame:
<div id="tabs">
<ul>
<li>Default Tab</li>
<li>ajax Content</li>
</ul>
<div id="tabs-1">
<p>
To replicate the error:
<ul>
<li>First use the search box top right to search to prove that code is ok</li>
<li>Then click the second ajax tab, and search again.</li>
<li>N.B. Chrome / IE give a state error, Firefox does not</li>
</ul>
</p>
</div>
<iframe id="tabs-2" src="ajaxTab.aspx" style="width:100%;" ></iframe>
</div>
Also, I'm not sure but this seems like error in the Web_UserControls_search control. In my opinion, NavBarSearchItemNoSearchItem_OnClick method must be refactored as below:
protected void NavBarSearchItemNoSearchItem_OnClick(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
var searchFieldTbx = NavBarSearchItemNo;
var navBarSearchCatHiddenField = NavBarSearchCatHiddenField;
var term = searchFieldTbx != null ? searchFieldTbx.Text : "";
if (term.Length > 0) //There is actually something in the input box we can work with
{
//Response.Redirect(Url.GetUrl("SearchResults", term));
Response.Redirect(ResolveClientUrl("~/Web/SearchResults.aspx?term=" + term + "&cat=" + navBarSearchCatHiddenField.Value));
}
}
Draw attention that we resolving client url when redirecting to search results page and instead of navBarSearchCatHiddenField use navBarSearchCatHiddenField.Value as cat parameter.
I guess that you use AJAX to fill the content of the tab. So in this case, content of your tab will be replaced by the new one from ajax and certainly _VIEWSTATE will be replaced. At server, do you use data from ViewState? In the "static tabs", you should prevent them auto reload by using cache:true
Your issue is that with your ajax call you bring in a complete ASPX page. Including the Form tag and its Viewstate. If you remove the Form tag from ajaxTab.aspx you will see everything works fine. asp.net does not know how to handle two Form tags in one page. Same goes for hidden Viewstate fields. You cannot bring in a full aspx page via ajax. Just bring in the content Div you want to display and you`ll be good to go.

ASP.NET Custom non-self-closing control

When building a custom control, how would you access the content between the opening and closing control tags?
<my:tag runat="server">
<p>...markup</p>...
</my:tag>
I am currently successfully using the Render method to output arbitrary markeup, but cannot seem to find out how to access the contained markup.
Take a look at this.Controls. This article :
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.control.controls(VS.71).aspx states "On an ASP.NET page, when controls are added declaratively between the opening and closing tags of a server control, ASP.NET automatically adds the controls to the containing server control's ControlCollection. "
As far as I understand, if you have
<yourcode:yourcontrol id="asdf" runat="server">
<p id="innerP" runat="server">Text here</p>
</yourcode:yourcontrol>
Then it would be possible to call this.FindControl("innerP").text="Other text here, since the P tag is generated on the server side.
However, if you do not have the runat="server" set on the P element:
<yourcode:yourcontrol id="asdf" runat="server">
<p id="innerP">Text here</p>
</yourcode:yourcontrol>
then you only can only find it through this.controls[0] since all the content will be rendered into a single Literal control.
I think you want to do this:
<my:tag runtat="server">
<p><asp:Label id="markupLabel" runat="server"/></p>
</my:tag>
And from the code-behind
markupLabel.text = "Foo";
If you add an ID to the my:tag tag, you should be able to access the controls inside of it using the .Controls collection of the tag.
