I modified Listbox mentioned in myChange the Selected Color Listbox question and when ever i select item exception is thrown.It reads

What am i doing wrong

I am seeing a border on combobox on mouse over as shown below:
I have tried following to get rid of the border. In VersionCB1_MouseEnter I wrote the following:
ComboBox cmb = e.OriginalSource as ComboBox;

But this does not work? How can I get rid of combo box border on Mouse Over?
I think the border you are seeing is from ComboBoxToggleButton template. I threw your code in a combo box to see if I could recreate the problem and I'm not seeing any border, but I had to remove the two references ComboBoxTextBox and ComboBoxToggleButton since I don't have them.
You could add the mouse over triggers to the toggle button control template to see if it is in control of that border. I'm pretty sure it does. I was able to control the mouse over border by adding the triggers. I did a simple template to estimate what you have. I was able to produce the desired behavior.

As you can see here, the corner is white, I want it to be transparent, and I know things can go wrong with WPF where transparent becomes white but then I could just change the color to the background color.

The closest I've come to getting to an answer is this post (code is omitted from my Style as it didn't have any effect) :-

However, I'm still unable to control the mouseover and selected colours. I'm getting closer as the post above suggests that it is a button which is actually doing the highlighting and selecting but I don't know how to incorporate that in to my existing style.
Here's the current effect of the Style. The top row is selected, the third row is mouse-overed, the other two rows are normal.

BTW, the Style I'm using was extracted from Blend and I tweaked it to use my app colours.

My goal is to style a combobox in WPF so that it looks like a combobox from older versions. What I mean by this is the old combobox has distinct white textbox and a grey toggle button on the right end. See Images below for

From what I have gathered in searching through posts on this website, my starting point will be editing the control template for a default combobox. This provides about 300 lines of code defining the styling of the control and in my opinion not very easy to follow.
This post WPF Change Background color of a Combobox has some code that styles a combobox similar to what I want, but I am hoping someone can explain the process more rather than just post code as I will be doing many minor tweaks to various controls.
Can anyone advise me if I am on the right track and where to go from here? Also, once I have something working, what would be the best way to reuse this new template style so that it can be used in other applications? Thanks for the help!

The context menu appears only via right click. When setting ContextMenu Background="Red" and Grid Background="Red", the menu looks like this:
