I'm new to the WPF styles and how they work exactly. So this is really a beginners question.
I used Expression Blend to create a Template using "Edit a copy...". This gives me a huge amount of XAML statements. I went on to edit those statements but didn't get the effect I wanted.
I want to modify the Expander Up and Down States (Left, Right not necessary).
Here is what I got, mostly from Expression Blend:
<Window.Resources>
<Style x:Key="ExpanderDownHeaderStyle" TargetType="{x:Type ToggleButton}">
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type ToggleButton}">
<Border Padding="{TemplateBinding Padding}">
<Grid SnapsToDevicePixels="False" Height="25">
<Grid.Background>
<LinearGradientBrush EndPoint="0.5,1" StartPoint="0.5,0">
<GradientStop Color="#FFEFEFEF" Offset="0.326"/>
<GradientStop Color="#FF9F9F9F" Offset="1"/>
</LinearGradientBrush>
</Grid.Background>
<Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<ColumnDefinition Width="40"/>
<ColumnDefinition Width="*"/>
</Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<Ellipse x:Name="circle" HorizontalAlignment="Center" Height="19" Stroke="DarkGray" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="19"/>
<Path x:Name="arrow" Data="M 0,2 H 10,10" HorizontalAlignment="Center" SnapsToDevicePixels="false" Stroke="#666" StrokeThickness="2" VerticalAlignment="Center">
</Path>
<ContentPresenter Grid.Column="1" HorizontalAlignment="Left" RecognizesAccessKey="True" SnapsToDevicePixels="True" VerticalAlignment="Center"/>
</Grid>
</Border>
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsMouseOver" Value="true">
<Setter Property="Stroke" TargetName="circle" Value="#FF3C7FB1"/>
<Setter Property="Stroke" TargetName="arrow" Value="#222"/>
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="IsPressed" Value="true">

<Setter Property="StrokeThickness" TargetName="circle" Value="1.5"/>
<Setter Property="Stroke" TargetName="arrow" Value="#FF003366"/>
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
<Style x:Key="ExpanderUpHeaderStyle" TargetType="{x:Type ToggleButton}">
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type ToggleButton}">
<Border Padding="{TemplateBinding Padding}">
<Grid SnapsToDevicePixels="False" Height="25" Background="Transparent">

</Grid.ColumnDefinitions>

<Setter Property="StrokeThickness" TargetName="circle" Value="1.5"/>
<Setter Property="Stroke" TargetName="arrow" Value="#FF003366"/>

</ControlTemplate.Triggers>

</Setter.Value>
I modified the Path value and deleted some stuff. I also tried to get a different Background for the two states (one with gradient, one with transparent background).
Any advise what I'm doing wrong or how this should be done in general?
You need to set your Template in your Trigger.
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<!-- This is your Trigger Condition -->
<Trigger Property="IsExpanded" Value="true">
<!-- This is what happens when condition is met - Right now it is just showing the ExpandSite -->
<Setter Property="Visibility" TargetName="ExpandSite" Value="Visible"/>
<!--What is should do is modify the Template of the control to use a different one
Not really sure what part of the control you want to modify, but this is the general idea -->
<Setter Property="Template" Value="..." TargetName="..." />
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
I've now changed my approach. I guess I just found the code that the Expression Blend designer generates kind of irritating.
For example I wanted to changed the style of toggle button when Up and Down. I created a single style for both up and down and created triggers inside that style that modify the appearance of the Button.
Code:
<ControlTemplate x:Key="ExpanderToggleButton" TargetType="ToggleButton">
<Path Name="Triangle" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Data="M 0 0 L 10 10 L 20 0 Z" Fill="Black" />
<ControlTemplate.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsChecked" Value="true">
<Setter TargetName="Triangle" Property="Data" Value="M 0 10 L 10 0 L 20 10 Z" />
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
I did the same for other properties that I wanted to be changed.
ExpanderDownHeaderStyle
custom arrow top or buttom modify path
Top arrow path:
Data="M 0 0 L 10 10 L 20 0"
Bottom arrow path:
Data="M 20 12 L 10 0 L 0 12"

I'm having a hard time finding a solution to this so would appreciate any help.

The closest I've come to getting to an answer is this post (code is omitted from my Style as it didn't have any effect) :-
Change ListViewItem background colour on mouse over
However, I'm still unable to control the mouseover and selected colours. I'm getting closer as the post above suggests that it is a button which is actually doing the highlighting and selecting but I don't know how to incorporate that in to my existing style.
Here's the current effect of the Style. The top row is selected, the third row is mouse-overed, the other two rows are normal.
Mouseover / selected colours
BTW, the Style I'm using was extracted from Blend and I tweaked it to use my app colours.
I don't think my Class code would be relevant here but correct me if I'm wrong and I will post it.
I think you need to add a style for the ListViewItems and set the ListView.ItemContainerStyle:
<!-- New style -->
<Style x:Key="StyleListViewItem" TargetType="ListViewItem">
<Style.Triggers>
<Trigger Property="IsMouseOver" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Green"/>
</Trigger>
<Trigger Property="IsSelected" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Blue"/>
</Trigger>
</Style.Triggers>
</Style>
<!-- Existing style -->
<Style x:Key="StyleListView" TargetType="ListView">
<Setter Property="ItemContainerStyle" Value="{StaticResource StyleListViewItem}"/>
<Setter Property="SnapsToDevicePixels" Value="true"/>
<!-- ... -->
</Style>
I have a style of MenuItem for its TopLevelHeader. It's a default style except for changing background when IsHightLight is True. And the background for top level MenuItem will be Red when I mouse over it and Click it.
How can I change the style so that the background will be Red when mouse over the MenuItem and the background will be Blue when I Click the MenuItem?
<ControlTemplate x:Key="{ComponentResourceKey ResourceId=TopLevelHeaderTemplateKey, TypeInTargetAssembly={x:Type MenuItem}}" TargetType="{x:Type MenuItem}">

<Setter Property="Canvas.Left" TargetName="OpaqueRect" Value="{Binding HorizontalOffset, ElementName=SubMenuScrollViewer}"/>
</Trigger>
</ControlTemplate.Triggers>
</ControlTemplate>
I change the Trigger like this. But the background always be red weather I mouse over it or click it. Why it didn't work?
<Trigger Property="IsChecked" Value="true">
<Setter Property="Visibility" TargetName="GlyphPanel" Value="Visible"/>
<Setter Property="Visibility" TargetName="Icon" Value="Collapsed"/>
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="templateRoot" Value="Blue"/>
</Trigger>
I don't have a Visual Studio right now but I guess that you see 'Red' color because of IsHighlighted Trigger
<Trigger Property="IsHighlighted" Value="True">
<Setter Property="Background" TargetName="templateRoot" Value="Red"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" TargetName="templateRoot" Value="{StaticResource MenuItem.Highlight.Border}"/>
</Trigger>
You should remove this and add your own IsMouseOver and IsChecked Triggers

Although the look will be slightly different but you can either go with it or change the style as well.
if you want this as same in other OS, edit the template and hard code as left to right for the Tick.
How can I make the background color of a node in a TreeView goes all the way out to the right edge?
Background
I have a TreeView where all nodes that have children are gray. Leaf nodes have an icon with descriptive text.
If i understand the problem right you are looking to stretch the treeview items.
If that is the case check Here
It's an easy fix. Unfortunately it'll require pretty much code since you'll have to re-template the TreeViewItem. The TreeViewItem's template looks like this
<ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type TreeViewItem}">
<Grid>
<Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<!-- The Expand/Collapse ToggleButton -->
<ColumnDefinition MinWidth="19" Width="Auto"/>
<!-- The TreeViewItem -->
<ColumnDefinition Width="Auto"/>
<!-- The Children -->
<ColumnDefinition Width="*"/>
</Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<Grid.RowDefinitions>
<RowDefinition Height="Auto"/>
<RowDefinition/>
</Grid.RowDefinitions>
<ToggleButton x:Name="Expander" ClickMode="Press" IsChecked="{Binding IsExpanded, RelativeSource={RelativeSource TemplatedParent}}" Style="{StaticResource ExpandCollapseToggleStyle}"/>
<Border x:Name="Bd" BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding BorderBrush}" BorderThickness="{TemplateBinding BorderThickness}" Background="{TemplateBinding Background}" Grid.Column="1" Padding="{TemplateBinding Padding}" SnapsToDevicePixels="true">
<ContentPresenter x:Name="PART_Header" ContentSource="Header" HorizontalAlignment="{TemplateBinding HorizontalContentAlignment}" SnapsToDevicePixels="{TemplateBinding SnapsToDevicePixels}"/>
</Border>
<ItemsPresenter x:Name="ItemsHost" Grid.ColumnSpan="2" Grid.Column="1" Grid.Row="1"/>
</Grid>
As you can see, the TreeViewItem itself is in Column 1 which has Width set to Auto while the children (ItemsPresenter) is in Grid.Column 1 and 2 and the Column 2 has Width set to *. To get the TreeViewItem itself to get the same Width as its children we can remove the middle Column (Column 1) and just use Grid.Column="1" for both.
Here's the default Template for TreeViewItem with this "Horizontal Stretch" fix. You'll have to add a reference to PresentationFramework.Aero

The Expander control in WPF does not stretch to fill all the available space. Is there any solutions in XAML for this?
All you need to do is this:
<Expander>
<Expander.Header>
<TextBlock
Text="I am header text..."
Background="Blue"
Width="{Binding
RelativeSource={RelativeSource
Mode=FindAncestor,
AncestorType={x:Type Expander}},
Path=ActualWidth}"
/>
</Expander.Header>
<TextBlock Background="Red">
I am some content...
</TextBlock>
</Expander>
http://joshsmithonwpf.wordpress.com/2007/02/24/stretching-content-in-an-expander-header/
Non stretchable Expanders is usually the problem of non stretchable parent controls.. Perhaps one of the parent controls has defined a HorizontalAlignment or VerticalAlignment property?
If you can post some sample code, we can give you a better answer.
This solution is a lot simpler and does not effect other expander controls you may using in your application.
<Expander ExpandDirection="Right" Grid.Column="0" Name="topOfB">
<Expander.Header>
<Grid HorizontalAlignment="Stretch" Width="{Binding Path=ActualWidth, ElementName=topOfB}">
<!-- control content goes here -->
The accepted answer draws outside the control because the header content is in one column and the expander button is in the first. Might be good enough for some cases.
If you want a clean solution you have to change the template of the expander.
Another way is an attached property:
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Windows;
using System.Windows.Controls;
using System.Windows.Media;
public static class ParentContentPresenter
{
public static readonly System.Windows.DependencyProperty HorizontalAlignmentProperty = System.Windows.DependencyProperty.RegisterAttached(
"HorizontalAlignment",
typeof(HorizontalAlignment),
typeof(ParentContentPresenter),
new PropertyMetadata(default(HorizontalAlignment), OnHorizontalAlignmentChanged));
public static void SetHorizontalAlignment(this UIElement element, HorizontalAlignment value)
{
element.SetValue(HorizontalAlignmentProperty, value);
}
[AttachedPropertyBrowsableForChildren(IncludeDescendants = false)]
[AttachedPropertyBrowsableForType(typeof(UIElement))]
public static HorizontalAlignment GetHorizontalAlignment(this UIElement element)
{
return (HorizontalAlignment)element.GetValue(HorizontalAlignmentProperty);
}
private static void OnHorizontalAlignmentChanged(DependencyObject d, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e)
{
var presenter = d.Parents().OfType<ContentPresenter>().FirstOrDefault();
if (presenter != null)
{
presenter.HorizontalAlignment = (HorizontalAlignment) e.NewValue;
}
}
private static IEnumerable<DependencyObject> Parents(this DependencyObject child)
{
var parent = VisualTreeHelper.GetParent(child);
while (parent != null)
{
yield return parent;
child = parent;
parent = VisualTreeHelper.GetParent(child);
}
}
}
It lets you do:
<Expander Header="{Binding ...}">
<Expander.HeaderTemplate>
<DataTemplate>
<!--Using a border here to show how width changes-->
<Border BorderBrush="Red" BorderThickness="1"
local:ParentContentPresenter.HorizontalAlignment="Stretch">
...
</Border>
</DataTemplate>
</Expander.HeaderTemplate>
</Expander>
Note that the use of the attached property is somewhat fragile as it assumes that there is a ContentPresenter in the template.
I am pretty surprised nobody has mentioned to just edit the control template, all the other solutions have some pretty serious drawbacks weather its not calculating width properly, not redrawing, render time etc...
This control template will modify the header's contentpresenter horizontal alignment to match the actual expanders (meaning it will stretch)

I Agree with HTH - check what sort of a container you're putting the Expander in... the StackPanel will always fold it's children down to the smallest size they can go to.
I'm using Expanders a lot in my project, and if you drop them into a Grid / DockPanel, then the expander will fill all available space (assuming it's Vertical & Horizontal orientations are set to Stretch).
Jonathan's suggestion of Binding the Expander's width to the container's width can get a bit tricky... I tried this technique a few weeks back and found that it can producte undesirable results in some cases, because it can inhibit the functioning of the layout system.
PS: As a general tip (and I'm sure I'm gonna get flamed for writing this), if you're unsure of what sort of layout-container to your controls in, then start off with a Grid. Using the Column & Row definitions allows you to very easily control whether child controls use minimum space ("Auto"), maximum space ("*") or an exact amount of space ("[number]").
The Silverlight Toolkit includes an Accordion control which acts like an expander that always stretches to the available space. I haven't tested it yet, but it might be functional for WPF too, like the Silverlight Chart controls.
