Why does WebClient.DownloadStringTaskAsync() block ? - new async API/syntax/CTP - c#

For some reason there is a pause after the program below starts. I believe that WebClient().DownloadStringTaskAsync() is the cause.

As far as I understand my program should start counting from 0 to 15 immediately. Am I doing something wrong?
I had the same problem with the original Netflix download sample (which you get with CTP) - after pressing the search button the UI first freezes - and after some time it is responsive while loadning the next movies. And I believe it didn't freeze in Anders Hejlsberg's presentation at PDC 2010.
One more thing. When instead of

While your program does block for a while, it does resume execution in the for loop, before the result is returned from the remote server.
Remember that the new async API is still single-threaded. So WebClient().DownloadStringTaskAsync() still needs to run on your thread until the request has been prepared and sent to the server, before it can await and yield execution back to your program flow in Main().
I think the results you are seeing are due to the fact that it takes some time to create and send the request out from your machine. First when that has finished, the implementation of DownloadStringTaskAsync can wait for network IO and the remote server to complete, and can return execution to you.
On the other hand, your RunOrdinaryTask method just initializes a task and gives it a workload, and tells it to start. Then it returns immediately. That is why you don't see a delay when using RunOrdinaryTask.
Here are some links on the subject: Eric Lippert's blog (one of the language designers), as well as Jon Skeet's initial blog post about it. Eric has a series of 5 posts about continuation-passing style, which really is what async and await is really about. If you want to understand the new feature in detail, you might want to read Eric's posts about CPS and Async. Anyways, both links above does a good job on explaining a very important fact:
Asynchronous != parallel
In other words, async and await does not spin up new threads for you. They just lets you resume execution of your normal flow, when you are doing a blocking operation - times where your CPU would just sit and do nothing in a synchronous program, waiting for some external operation to complete.

Just to be clear about what is happening: DownloadStringTaskAsync sets up a continuation, then calls WebClient.DownloadStringAsync, on the same thread, and then yields execution back to your code. Therefore, the blocking time you are seeing before the loop starts counting, is the time it takes DownloadStringAsync to complete. Your program with async and await is very close to be the equivalent of the following program, which exhibits the same behaviour as your program: An initial block, then counting starts, and somewhere in the middle, the async op finishes and prints the content from the requested URL:

Note: I am by no means an expert on this subject, so I might be wrong on some points. Feel free to correct my understanding of the subject, if you think this is wrong - I just looked at the PDC presentation and played with the CTP last night.

Are you sure the issue isn't related to the proxy configuration settings being detected from IE/Registry/Somewhere Slow?
Try setting webClient.Proxy = null (or specifying settings in app.config) and your "blocking" period should be minimal.

Are you pressing F5 or CTLR+F5 to run it? With F5 there's a delay for VS just to search for the symbols for AsyncCtpLibrary.dll...

Running a long-running parallel task in the background, while allowing small async tasks to update the foreground

I have around 10 000 000 tasks that each takes from 1-10 seconds to complete. I am running those tasks on a powerful server, using 50 different threads, where each thread picks the first not-done task, runs it, and repeats.
Pseudo-code:

Using this code, I can run all the tasks in parallell on any given number of threads.
In reality, the code uses C#'s Task.WhenAll, and looks like this:

This works just as I wanted it to, but I have a problem: since this code takes a lot of time to run, I want the user to see some progress. The progress is displayed in a colored bitmap (representing a matrix), and also takes some time to generate (a few seconds).
Therefore, I want to generate this visualization on a background thread. But this other background thread is never executed. My suspicion is that it is using the same thread pool as the parallel code, and is therefore enqueued, and will not be executed before the parallel code is actually finished. (And that's a bit too late.)
Here's an example of how I generate the progress visualization:

But then I have to generate 10 million Task objects, instead of just 50 Task objects, running through my array of stuff to do. That sounds like it uses much more RAM than necessary. Any clever solutions to this?

Note: RunTask just executes a web request using the WebClient, and parses the results. It's nothing in there that can create a dead lock.
This seems to work as the old parallelism code, except that it needs a minute or two to do the initial foreach loop to post the tasks. Is this delay really worth it?
Nevertheless, my progress task still seems to be blocked. Ignoring the Progress< T > suggestion for now, since this reduced code still suffers the same problem:

ANOTHER EDIT:
The issue seems to have been that I overloaded the thread pool with all my simultaneous blocking I/O calls. I replaced WebClient with HttpClient and its async-functions, and now everything seems to be working nicely.

.NET already provides a mechanism to report progress with the IProgress< T> and the Progress< T> implementation.
The IProgress interface allows clients to publish messages with the Report(T) class without having to worry about threading. The implementation ensures that the messages are processed in the appropriate thread, eg the UI thread. By using the simple IProgress< T> interface the background methods are decoupled from whoever processes the messages.
You can find more information in the Async in 4.5: Enabling Progress and Cancellation in Async APIs article. The cancellation and progress APIs aren't specific to the TPL. They can be used to simplify cancellation and reporting even for raw threads.
Progress< T> processes messages on the thread on which it was created. This can be done either by passing a processing delegate when the class is instantiated, or by subscribing to an event. Copying from the article:

Async and Await - How is order of execution maintained?

I am actually reading some topics about the Task Parallel Library and the asynchronous programming with async and await. The book "C# 5.0 in a Nutshell" states that when awaiting an expression using the await keyword, the compiler transforms the code into something like this:

The call of the 'GetPrimesCountAsync' method will be enqueued and executed on a pooled thread. In general invoking multiple threads from within a for loop has the potential for introducing race conditions.
So how does the CLR ensure that the requests will be processed in the order they were made? I doubt that the compiler simply transforms the code into the above manner, since this would decouple the 'GetPrimesCountAsync' method from the for loop.
Just for the sake of simplicity, I'm going to replace your example with one that's slightly simpler, but has all of the same meaningful properties:

The ordering is all maintained because of the definition of your code. Let's imagine stepping through it.
This method is first called
The first line of code is the for loop, so i is initialized.
The loop check passes, so we go to the body of the loop.
SomeExpensiveComputation is called. It should return a Task<T> very quickly, but the work that it'd doing will keep going on in the background.
The rest of the method is added as a continuation to the returned task; it will continue executing when that task finishes.
After the task returned from SomeExpensiveComputation finishes, we store the result in value.
value is printed to the console.
GOTO 3; note that the existing expensive operation has already finished before we get to step 4 for the second time and start the next one.
As far as how the C# compiler actually accomplishes step 5, it does so by creating a state machine. Basically every time there is an await there's a label indicating where it left off, and at the start of the method (or after it's resumed after any continuation fires) it checks the current state, and does a goto to the spot where it left off. It also needs to hoist all local variables into fields of a new class so that the state of those local variables is maintained.
Now this transformation isn't actually done in C# code, it's done in IL, but this is sort of the morale equivalent of the code I showed above in a state machine. Note that this isn't valid C# (you cannot goto into a a for loop like this, but that restriction doesn't apply to the IL code that is actually used. There are also going to be differences between this and what C# actually does, but is should give you a basic idea of what's going on here:

Note that I've ignored task cancellation for the sake of this example, I've ignored the whole concept of capturing the current synchronization context, there's a bit more going on with error handling, etc. Don't consider this a complete implementation.

No. await does not initiate any kind of background processing. It waits for existing processing to complete. It is up to GetPrimesCountAsync to do that (e.g. using Task.Run). It's more clear this way:

The transform that you shows is basically right but notice that the next loop iteration is not started right away but in the callback. That's what serializes execution.

Asynchronous Tasks take too much time

I have been trying make an asynchronous approach to my CPU-bound function which compute some aggregate functions. The thing is that there is some Deadlock (I suppose), because the time of calculation is too different. I am reallz newbie in this Task Parallel world, I also read Stephem Cleary articles but I am still unsure of all aspect this asynchronous approach.

I measure time throught Stopwatch in AverageValueOfTagPerDay functions. This function is synchronous (Is that a problem?). Each Task take 12 seconds. But when I uncommented the line and use ContinueWith() approach, these Tasks take 5-6 seconds each(which is desirable). How is it possible?
More strange is that when I set the for loop in Main() on 10, sometimes it takes 5 seconds as well as when I use ContinueWith(). So I guess somewhere is deadlock but I am unable to find that.

"Asynchronous" and "CPU-bound" are not terms that go together. If you have a CPU-bound process, then you should use parallel technologies (Parallel, Parallel LINQ, TPL Dataflow).

Possibly because I do not cover parallel technologies in any of my articles or blog posts. :) I do cover them in my book, but not online. My online work focuses on asynchrony, which is ideal for I/O-based operations.
To solve your problem, you should use a parallel approach:

Of course, this approach assumes that PIServer is threadsafe. It also assumes that there's no I/O being done by the "server" class; if there is, then TPL Dataflow may be a better choice than Parallel LINQ.
If you are planning to use this code in a UI application and don't want to block the UI thread, then you can call the code asynchronously like this:

HttpClient.PostAsync Hanging Until All System.Timers Are Started

I'm having an odd problem with HttpClient and Timers. I have a large number of objects (up to 10,000) that post to a web service. These objects are on timers and post to the service at some n time after creation. The problem is that the Post stalls, until all of the timers have started. See the code below for an example.

Because you're using up all the ThreadPool threads.
There's a lot wrong with your sample code. You're killing any chance of having reasonable performance, not to mention that the whole thing is inherently unstable.
You're creating a thousand timers in a loop. You're not keeping a reference to any of them, so they will be collected the next time the GC runs - so I'd expect that in practice, very few of them will actually run, unless there's very little memory allocated until they actually get to run.
The timer's Elapsed event will be invoked on a ThreadPool thread. In that thread, you synchronously wait for a bunch of asynchronous calls to complete. That means you're now wasting a thread pool thread, and completely wasting the underlying asynchronicity of the asynchronous method.
The continuation to the asynchronous I/O will be posted to ThreadPool as well - however, the ThreadPool is full of timer callbacks. It will slowly start creating more and more threads to accomodate the amount of work scheduled, until it finally is able to execute the first callback from the asynchronous I/O and it slowly untangles itself. At this point, you likely have more than 1000 threads, and are showing a complete misunderstanding of how to do asynchronous programming.
One way (still rather bad) to fix both problems is to simply make use of asynchronicity all the time:

A much better way would be to implement some scheduler that handles dispatching the asynchronous I/O with the throttling you need. You probably want to limit the number of concurrent requests or something like that, rather than running the requests in pre-defined intervals (and ignoring the fact that some requests might take very long, timeout or some such).
As mentioned in another reply, that Result property is the problem. when you are using it, asyc will be come sync. If you want to run async operations in console or windows service applications, try Nito AsyncEx library. It creates an AsyncContext. Now you can change void Run to Task Run which is await-able and doesn't need the blocking Result property and in this case await Post will work in the Run method.

As you're running on a console application, which uses the default ThreadPoolSynchronizationContext, you shouldn't really be experiencing the "hanging" feeling as if you are in a UI application. I assume its because Post is taking longer to return than to allocate 1000 timers.
In order for your method to run async, it has to go "async all the way. Using the Task.Result property, as mentioned before will simply block the asynchronous operation until it completes.
Lets see what we need to do for this to be "async all the way":
First, lets change Run from void to async Task so we can await on the Post method:

That's it, now we flow async all the way down to the HTTP request and back.
It's because the timers are set up very quickly so they have all finished setting up by the time PostAsync completes. Try putting a Thread.Sleep(1000) after timer.Start, this will slow down the set up of your timers and you should see some PostAsync executions complete.
By the way, Task.Result is a blocking operation, which can cause a deadlock when run from a GUI application. There is more information in this article.

Out of Memory Threading - Perf Test Tool

I'm creating a tool to load test (sends http: GETs) and it runs fine but eventually dies because of an out of memory error.
ASK: How can I reset the threads so this loop can continually run and not err?

You are instantiating Threads left right and centre. This is likely you problem. You want to replace the

This will run your LoadTest on a Thread in the ThreadPool, instead of using resources to create a new Thread each time. HOWEVER. This will then expose a different issue.
Threads on the ThreadPool are a limited resource and you want to return Threads to the ThreadPool as soon as possible. I assume you are using the synchronous download methods as opposed to the APM methods. This means that whilst the request is being sent out to the server, the thread spawning the request is sleeping as opposed to going off to do some other work.
Either use (assuming .net 4.5)

var response = await client.DownloadStringTaskAsync(url);
Console.WriteLine(response);
Or use a callback (if not .net 4.5)
var client = new WebClient();
client.OnDownloadStringCompleted(x => Console.WriteLine(x));
client.BeginDownloadString(url);
Use a ThreadPool and use QueueUserWorkItem instead of creating thousands of threads. Threads are expensive objects and it is no surprise you are running out of memory and besides you won't be able to have any performance (in your test tool) with so many threads.
You code snippet creates lots of threads and no wonder it eventually runs out of memory. It would be better to use a Thread Pool here.
