My App.Config file isn't saving anything I modify - c#

Here's my code:

Problem is, I'm testing this with the F5 key, it boots up and sure enough using a breakpoint shows that it is indeed going inside the If Condition, but when I "Stop" the application and press F5 again it goes inside the If Condition AGAIN. Is this standard operational procedures?
If so, how can I test if its working?

This is going against the spirit of what the App.config file is used for ... but to answer your question, you need to do System.Configuration.Configuration.Save().

App.config is typically used to configure database connections, providers, etc. And is usually set once at installation. It's suggested that user settings go into a separate config file user.config. See this for the explanation.

Note - now that I read why you're using these settings, may I suggest another way? You should probably just check if the file is there:

It's safer this way anyhow because having a setting set to true doesn't necessarily mean the file is where you think it is.

I'm not sure you should expect this to save; you can, however, have a settings file that has a setting (a bool in this case) in the user's context, which saves (when you ask it to) via Settings.Default.Save().

I don't advice you to use App.settings for this purpose.

Get and Set values in local resource file

I have put 2 strings in the built-in resource file of my main project (not sure how I define this properly). How can I access these values? How would I change them? The resource is public so that the user can change them.
eg:
Project1.Resources.Get("string1").Value();
and
Project1.Resources.Set("string1") = "whatever";

Resources are not intended to be changed at runtime. You should consider using user settings instead. For details, see Using Application Settings and User Settings on MSDN.
This will allow you to use the designer to build the settings, and write:
string string1 = Properties.Settings.Default.String1;
And:
Properties.Settings.Default.String1 = "whatever";
Properties.Settings.Default.Save();
You can get resource by writing the following piece of code
Project1.Resources.String1
You can not change it at runtime.

Getting back variables after a program crashes

I am trying to find a way to get back my previous variable's value so that I can resume my application to it's previous running state before it crashed when I MANUALLY relaunch it. I am currently using a 'config' file that is saved in the project folder. Is there a better way to do this?

A config file is a good answer in general. Your other options are usually the registry or the database, but I would argue that a config file is a safer option.
The thing about persisting this information is that it may cause an error again, and if so you'll want to be able to discard it easily. A file (of course stored in user settings space) is perhaps the way to do that. If need be you can instruct the user to delete the file. It's a more complicated fix for a user to access the registry or the database.
Also, you should wrap up your state in an appropriate object, and build initialization logic that initializes the state object and has mechanism for not loading for the config file.
I use config files. I also have a global exception handler that catches any exceptions and offers the chance to save any files (including those that the user is working on) before the app closes.
I would also agree with C Ross that you may persist the data that caused the app to fail. Another option that will not get you right back is to persist the settings at regular intervals using a timer or background process. I use this with several backups a bit like the system restore feature in windows.

As #C. Ross said, user config file is a good choice.
Of course, first you'll have to preserve your application's state in some object during runtime.

How to get the (.lnk) shortcut filepath in a program which started by the shortcut?

I have a c# program which open *.postfix file.
If a user runs a (.lnk)shortcut which points to my type of file, my program will open the target.
So, how could my program know it is started by a (.lnk)shortcut (and get it's file path)?
In some circumstances,i need to replace the .lnk file.

By following #Anders answer, i find out my problem lays here.
I made some changes to windows registry, so browser knows to throw customized protocol string to certain program.
some thing like this..

That's maybe why i lost lpTitle. :(
I'm going to try this way:
Whenever my program invoked, of course fed with %1, program checks current opened explorer(Window), and try to get it's current path with IWebBrowserApp. With that path and desktop of course, scan and analyze *.lnk to determine which one to replace.
I think this will probably work, but not be sure. I will try.

In native code you can call GetStartupInfo, if the STARTF_TITLEISLINKNAME bit is set in STARTUPINFO.dwFlags then the path to the .lnk is in STARTUPINFO.lpTitle. I don't know if there is a .NET way to get this info, you probably have to P/Invoke...
You don't. There's no way to do it. End of story.
So this has been brought to my attention due to a recent downvote. There's an accepted answer showing an idea that gets the path to the launching shortcut most of the time. However my answer is to the whole. OP wants the link to the shortcut so he can change it. That is what can't be done most of the time.
Most likely case is the shortcut file exists in the start menu but is unwritable. However other cases involve the shortcut coming from another launching application that didn't even read it from a disk but from a database (I've seen a lot of corporate level restricted application launch tools). I also have a program that launches programs from shortcuts not via IShellLink but by parsing the .lnk file (because it must not start COM for reasons) and launching the program contained. It doesn't pass STARTF_TITLEISLINKNAME because it's passing an actual title.

Basically, you'll pass the file path as an argument to your program. Then if it's a console application or Windows Forms , you should check the arguments in Program.Main

Store & Return Settings for a Webpage

So I am using C# ASP.NET 3.5 and I would like to add a feature to my site to turn on and off a sort of debug mode for testing purposes.
Is there a best way to have a file or class that stores or returns simply if myDebug is on or off. It has to be accessed fast since it will be used a lot on multiple pages and it should be easy to set using the website itself.
My first thought is just a class with get/set which is stored on every page... perhaps the master page?

Sounds like something you'd want to put in AppSettings in your web.config.
(I'm assuming that setting compilation debug to true in web.config is insufficient for what you're trying to do.)
Use AppSettings.
You can get your app settings like so:

You might have to call ConfigurationManager.RefreshSection("appSettings"); after the save to have the app see the changes.... Im not sure if the cfg.Save() will reload/refresh the settings.

Reading default application settings in C#

I have a number of application settings (in user scope) for my custom grid control. Most of them are color settings. I have a form where the user can customize these colors and I want to add a button for reverting to default color settings. How can I read the default settings?
For example:
I have a user setting named CellBackgroundColor in Properties.Settings.
At design time I set the value of CellBackgroundColor to Color.White using the IDE.
User sets CellBackgroundColor to Color.Black in my program.
I save the settings with Properties.Settings.Default.Save().
User clicks on the Restore Default Colors button.
Now, Properties.Settings.Default.CellBackgroundColor returns Color.Black. How do I go back to Color.White?

Reading "Windows 2.0 Forms Programming", I stumbled upon these 2 useful methods that may be of help in this context:

ApplicationSettingsBase.Reset
From MSDN:

Properties.Settings.Default.Reset() will reset all settings to their original value.
I've got round this problem by having 2 sets of settings. I use the one that Visual Studio adds by default for the current settings, i.e. Properties.Settings.Default. But I also add another settings file to my project "Project -> Add New Item -> General -> Settings File" and store the actual default values in there, i.e. Properties.DefaultSettings.Default.
I then make sure that I never write to the Properties.DefaultSettings.Default settings, just read from it. Changing everything back to the default values is then just a case of setting the current values back to the default values.
How do I go back to Color.White?
Two ways you can do:
Save a copy of the settings before the user changes it.
Cache the user modified settings and save it to Properties.Settings before the application closes.
I found that calling ApplicationSettingsBase.Reset would have the effect of resetting the settings to their default values, but also saving them at the same time.
The behaviour I wanted was to reset them to default values but not to save them (so that if the user did not like the defaults, until they were saved they could revert them back).
I wrote an extension method that was suitable for my purposes:
