C# User Control that can contain other Controls (when using it) - c#

I found something about this issue for ASP, but it didn't help me much ...
What I'd like to do is the following: I want to create a user control that has a collection as property and buttons to navigate through this collection. I want to be able to bind this user control to a collection and display different controls on it (containing data from that collection).
Like what you had in MS Access on the lower edge of a form ...
to be more precise:
When I actually use the control in my application (after I created it), I want to be able to add multiple controls to it (textboxes, labels etc) between the <myControly> and </mycontrol>
If I do that now, the controls on my user control disappear.

I'm having a hard time understanding your question, but I think what you're describing is an ItemsControl using DataTemplates to display the contents of (presumably) an ObservableCollection(T).

A UserControl may not be the best way to do this. You're wanting to add decorations around content, which is basically what Border does: it has a child element, and it adds its own stuff around the edges.
Look into the Decorator class, which Border descends from. If you make your own Border descendant, you should be easily able to do what you want. However, I believe this would require writing code, not XAML.
You might still want to make a UserControl to wrap the buttons at the bottom, just so you can use the visual designer for part of the process. But Decorator would be a good way to glue the pieces together and allow for user-definable content.

Here's a link to a built-in control (HeaderedContentControl) that does the same thing as the accepted answer except that it is an existing control in WPF since .Net 3.0

Dynamic controls switching in WPF

Title might be misleading but i'm not sure how to describe it.
Lets say i have 2 containers - one on the left, one on the right. Left container has multiple buttons. Pressing them will change whats inside 2nd container.
If i press 1st button a set of buttons and calendar will appear, 2nd - datagridview etc. Its example.
How can i achieve it? I'm not asking for solution (it can't be solved in one line of code, obviously), but what should i search for. Some specific control? Displaying other window inside it? Etc.
I am not sure if I understood the question well, so I wrote the following scenario from what I understood.
As you mentioned, you have a main window that contains 2 panels, one on the left and the other on the right. In the left panel, there is a list of buttons placed as a group of menus, which, when clicked, show other content in the right panel, something like a navigation to another system module (see the gif):
If this is your scenario, you can design your WPF application as follows:
Create UserControls for each screen you want to navigate to. In the previous example, you could create a UserControl for the module of the task list, and another UserControl for the module of My Agenda. Check this link so you know what a UserControl is.
Manage navigation on the main window. Just like in WinForms, you could handle the click event on each button in the left panel, however, an elegant way to handle the click event is that your handle it in the parent container, since, unlike Winforms, the click event is a bubbling event. Check this link, so you know what a routed event and what is a bubbling event.
In the example video, could you notice that each module is in a container that has a header and that the header text changes when the button is clicked and the header text is updated with the button text? This can be done in many ways, but a good way to do it is through data binding, check this link to understand what this concept is. With experience, you will realize when it will be advisable to apply this and when it will not.
As you can see, there are many concepts that you should review and learn to be able to make a good design of an application taking advantage of all the benefits that WPF has and to continue with the philosophy of WPF.
I write an example code that I also publish on GitHub. I explain some things about the code, but I suggest that you expand these concepts in the links that I left you and in other reliable sources of knowledge, such as books or tutorials from Microsoft itself.

You can use DataTemplates with Data Binding: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/wpf/data/data-templating-overview
This will allow you to define templates that are automatically applied to objects of specific types. So you could have a calendar object, list view, data grid, etc apply individually.
You could also use the visibility to show/hide the view as desired when your button(s) are clicked.

There are also other MVVM approaches that use activators to show/hide/generate new objects of specific types and display them.

How to change Content property in ContentControl

I have custom ContentControl

You might have done some specific settings in your code. #Martin Zikmund's suggestion also was reasonable. You could refer to his suggestion and check your code. After that, if you still could not solve this issue, please provide a Minimal, Complete, and Verifiable example.
This should work. The reason could be that the control does not stretch and is displayed just 0x0 in size. Try to set absolute Width and Height to the control2 and check if it displays. You can also set myContentControl.HorizontalContentStretch and myContentControl.VerticalContentStretch.
You can try running the app in debugger and then use the Live Property Explorer to see what the actual size of the control inside Content is.
Ok, I found out where the things went wrong. I am using different controls for desktop and mobile devices, so I put some of theirs XAML views to the DeviceFamily-Mobile folder. This way they automatically use when needed. I've confused namespaces, because all XAML views in this folder have a root namespace for accessibility reasons. When I was trying to add control to the ContentControl via c#, I didn't resolve namespace where my controls were placed. So I've put XAML view as a childs to the ContentControl, and they staying invisible as none of them has InitializeComponent() method. Adding correct controls with initialization fixed my problem.
I am very grateful for your answers, they pointed me to the right way.

WPF user controls and name scoping

I've been playing around with WPF and MVVM and noticed a strange thing. When using {Binding ElementName=...} on a custom user control, the name of the root element within the user control seems to be visible in the window using the control. Say, here is an example user control:

Again, nothing fancy... except the fact that both the window and the user control have the same name! But I'd expect root to mean the same thing throughout the whole window XAML file, and therefore refer to the window, not to the user control. Alas, the following message is printed when I run it:

Your confusion here about how wpf namescopes work is understanable in this situation.
Your issue is simply that you are applying a binding upon a UserControl, which is the "root" (so to speak) of its own namescope. UserControls, and pretty much any container objects, have their own namescopes. These scopes encompass not only child elements, but the object that contains the namescope as well. This is why you can apply x:Name="root" to your window and (except in this one case) locate it from a child control. If you couldn't, namescopes would be pretty much useless.
The confusion comes when you're acting upon a root of a namescope within an encompassing namescope. Your assumption was that the parent's namescope had precedence, but it does not. The Binding is calling FindName on the target object, which in your case is your user control. (Side note, the Binding isn't doing jack, the actual calls can be found in ElementObjectRef.GetObject, but that's where the Binding delegates the call to)
When you call FindName on the root of a namescope, only names defined within this scope are examined. Parent scopes are not searched. (Edit... a bit more reading of the source http://referencesource.microsoft.com/#PresentationFramework/src/Framework/MS/Internal/Data/ObjectRef.cs,5a01adbbb94284c0 starting at line 46 I see that the algorithm walks up the visual tree until it finds a target, so child scopes have precedence over parent scopes)
The result of all this is that you get the user control instance instead of the window, like you were hoping. Now, to answer your individual questions...

Yep. Otherwise namescopes wouldn't work.

Ideally, you wouldn't. Just like you don't ever want to have to know the name of the root of a TextBox. Interestingly, though, knowing the names of templates defined within a control is often important when attempting to modify it's look and feel...

No! It's fine. Use it. If you aren't sharing your UserControl with other people, just make sure to change its name if you are experiencing this particular problem. If you aren't having any problem, reuse the same name all day, it isn't hurting anything.
If you ARE sharing your UserControl, you should probably rename it to something that won't conflict with other people's names. Call it MuhUserControlTypeName_MuhRoot_Durr or something.

Nah. Just change the x:Name of your user control and move on.

No, I don't believe so. I don't think there is any good reason for it to be, anyhow.

WPF user control inheritance issues

I made a WPF control in a library project and would like to extend it with a new one.

However, I get an error message saying that the name "EmbeddingUserControl" does not exist in namespace "Genesyslab.Desktop.Modules.ExtensionUtils85.GUI".
The name clearly does exist, since the xaml.cs can find it, but for some reason the xaml cannot.

Long story short - you cannot inherit control with xaml by another control with xaml (and does it makes sense even to do so?). In your case, EmbeddingUserControl does not contain any visual tree elements (just empty grid), so you can just do:

Then you can inherit exactly like you do already in your question (don't forget to inherit from EmbeddingUserControl both in xaml file and in code-behind file).
You can also inherit from user control with xaml, if your inherited control does not have xaml itself (so you can add\override logic).
If you need to inherit some visual stuctures - you have to switch from inheritance to composition. That is: your base control provides some placeholders where other controls may be placed, or even better allows to provide templates to format data items (like for example ItemsControl and ItemTemplate property). Then you just fill those placeholders with other controls if necessary.

How can I find an item with specific value, in a Collection bound to a Canvas

I've been Google'ing a bit around for this, but without getting any real answer. Probably because my question might be a bit cryptic. Here goes:
Lets say i have an ObservableCollection<SomeModel> containing a bunch of models. I then add the corresponding Views to a Canvas. Specifying this in the resources of the Window, and then bind the Canvas' ItemsSource to the ObservableCollection<SomeModel>. This works fine.
SomeModel is bound to SomeView, this is a UserControl.
Now, when this View gets focus, or when I MouseDown on it, I would like to have it marked as "Selected". Somehow, i would like to have a property in the codebehind to the Window holding my Canvas, where i can always get the selected item.
I've been thinking of having a BindingList instead of the ObservableCollection, and when an IsSelected property on the model changes, then a method will extract the selected item from the list. But this seems to be a bit of a performance killer, as i will be notified on all changes to the items.
How can I accomplish this?
There are multiple ways you could solve this. But probably the simplest it to work with a ListBox and bind to it. ListBox as it has bindable ItemsSource and a SelectedItem property that has the item that is currently selected in it. It also calls the SelectionChanged event when the selection changes if you want to do something in the code behind .cs file.
I would recommend keeping the ObservableCollection in your View Model to keep true to MVVM.
If the style or placement of ListBox does not suit your override the template to something that suits your needs better.
You could look at a behaviour if the above doesn't work for you but best to keep it simple.

This is how you would build the view. Note the ItemsPanel attribute is bound to a defined ItemsPanelTemplate in the UserControl.Resources section which specifies a Canvas to put the items on.
