I am using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 (version 9.0.30729.1). My problem is that the only reporting-related toolbox items I see are 3 "Textbox" controls. Where are the other stuff? Do I need to add a reference to a different assembly?
Here are the steps I take:
1) Open Visual Studio
2) Add new project --> "Reports Application"
3) Open Report1.rdlc
4) Open the toolbox and no controls are available (except the repeating 3 Textbox controls)
Thanks for your help.
My good sense tells me that something got corrupted in your installation.
Here's what I would try before attempting a repair (this happened recently):
I fixed this by going into my profile as follows:
C:\Documents and Settings\MYUSERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0\ProjectAssemblies
There are four HIDDEN files in there that make up what is apparently the toolbox cache. If you erase them, they will be re-generated and #13119 will go back to General. As I said, these files appear to be hidden so configure the file explorer accordingly.
Second problem: my User controls disappeared from the toolbox.
I was able to fix it by going into the VS menus:
Visual Studio "Tools" menu
"Options" submenu
"Windows Form Designer" tab
"General" tab
Set "AutoToolboxPopulate" to "True"
My problem was The Report Items Toolbox was showing multiple textboxes instead of valid Report controls.
Solution:
1) Close the visual studio 2005.
2) delete the folders under C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\application Data\microsoft\visualStudio\
3) Open your visual studio 2005 project. It should work
Here is a book reference available through Google Books: http://books.google.com/books?id=b9j0MKXhnygC&pg=PA419&lpg=PA419&dq=vs+2008+Reports+Application+toolbox&source=web&ots=awTO1ibUZH&sig=7iHAUSCZ46_uAjC5lAfLeiXZt_Q&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=7&ct=result#PPA433,M1
I also did the same (on same VS2008 SP1) and had the exact same items available.
A complete reinstall took care of it.
Thank you!!
This fixed my report designer toolbox. My "report items" group was only showing three textbox items.
I am on Vista though, so the folder was..
C:\Users\Fox\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio
I just renamed this and next time VS started it recreated the toolbox and all the items were in place.
Before doing this I had tried to reset the toolbox with a "right-click|reset toolbox" in VS, but it didn't fix the problem, only removing this folder did it.

I am new to Visual Studio and the .NET framework. I create an ASP.NET Web API project and I a menu panel as shown in the screenshot, where I can easily add the controller class and other stuff:
but when I close Visual Studio and the reload the project, then I can not see the menu like in above, rather then I see the menu as shown below. I am confused - is this a setup problem or not?
Is there any solution for this problem?
As marc_s said, in the second screenshot, you entered "Solution Explorer - Folder View" by mistake.
There is a difference between the file page and the solution interface.
Click this button (Switch between solutions and available views), you can switch between different views.
Using Visual Studio Professional 2017 (Release 15.2 26430.16), when I open a xaml file for a desktop UI that I have developed, I can no longer see the xaml designer (I only see the raw xaml code). This is new behaviour and may be due to me having a system clean-out, so maybe I removed an SDK that I need or something like that?
Are there any Visual Studio error logs I can check for warnings etc?
Frankly, your situation is different than mine. In my situation, it was because of Resharper. Maybe this may useful for someone else.
What to do is checking Resharper Options > Enviroment > Performance Guide > Disable XAML Designer.
It must be set to "Ignore" or "Show in Status Bar". Otherwise, it will always disable XAML Designer.
In the Visual Studio 2017 Installer, I selected all of the SDKs and installed the missing ones. This did not fix the problem by itself, but a subsequent 'repair' from the Visual Studio 2017 Installer (available from the 'hamburger' drop-down) did.
Sometimes, adding or removing SDKs from the Installer toggles the 'Enable XAML Designer' check box under Tools -> Options -> XAML Designer -> General (or perhaps it was the repair step that turned this back on), so ensure that this is checked.
Make sure XAML Designer is enabled.
Tools -> Options -> XAML Designer -> General -> Enable XAML Designer
I couldn't get the designer to work, but I found an alternate solution posted here, posted by #DamianSuess
Use the View > Other Windows > Xamarin.Forms Previewer menu in
Visual Studio to open the preview window. Use the Window > New
Vertical Tab Group menu to position it side-by-side.

I know this issue is tagged as WPF but I had a similar issue for Xamarin Forms.
What solved this issue for me:
Right Click the xaml file
Select "Open With..."
Select Xamarin.Forms Previewer
Click OK
Optionally, you can set the Xamarin.Forms Previewer as the default for xaml files
make sure you have correctly installed the Windows 10 SDK, there are 3-4 versions of the SDK, the error you are talking about can also be a consequence of a incompatible sdk,
also reinstall the sdk related to your app, close every process related to Visual studio running in background while reinstalling the SDK.
Can you share a screenshot of the xaml designer page?
I had the same, I found that opening the XAML in VS community did not work. However, if I choose file -> open -> project/solution and open the corresponding sln file, it works.
Its Not a Programming Question But about Visual studio express 2012.
Trying to create a new report in the visual studio 2012 but can not see the list of data sets, parameters etc: In general tab i am seeing this
"There are no usable controls in this group. Drag an item onto this text to add it to the toolbox"
I have searched to fixed it but not succeeded till now..
I came across this same issue today and read plenty of things such as "this is VS bug...." but the solution was much simpler than that, I just needed to stop debugging (Shift+F5).
If that doesn't work, I recommend restarting the IDE.
If this doesn't work, I guess that uninstalling VS and doing a fresh installation is the answer you're looking for. It's important to note that it's recommended to restart Windows after installing VS and before launching it.
Right click on the Toolbox and press "Show All"
Right click on Toolbox, Click on "choose Items.". Restart IDE. That worked for me.
Right click on Toolbar and select: Reset Toolbox.
MFC controls will reappear.
I also had this problem, and it turned out I was trying to open the wrong toolbox: what I was actually looking for was the 'SSIS toolbox'. If none of the other options have worked, try selecting View -> Other Windows -> SSIS Toolbox. That fixed it for me.
[I found this out from this blog by James Serra]
In VS 2015, the SSIS Toolbox is under SSIS tab, not under View.
"There are no usable controls..." is shown when you have currently opened a file that is not designer file (e.g. "Form1.cs"). Once you open the designer file (e.g. "Form1.Designer.cs") the items should be shown again.
Just hover over the design and then press escape. A control that you had selected and not dropped is holding up memory.
This happened to me, and it was because I was currently debugging. Once I ended debugging, the usable controls appeared.
I entered in work with Telerik RadControls. In web.config telerik set in many places. But can anyone give me algorithm how in new project asp.net (web application) in Visual Studio 2010 add dll? (dll library I have)
If you want to add the items to the toolbox so you can do Drag And Drop, do this:
1). Open Visual Studio
2). Open a new project (or existing)
3). Find your "toolbar" window in VS.
4). Right click in the tool bar white space (somewhere where there are no existing controls)
5). Click "Add Tab"
6). Name this tab "Telerik"
7). Now, right click again, and hit "Choose items"
8). A Window will pop open, you can select your Telerik DLL, and it will fill the tool box with
all the controls you need.
You can then Drag and Drop these controls to your pages.
I hope this helps.
If you have Telerik installed on your Visual Studio machine, but it is not currently part of your project, the easiest way to add the proper Telerik DLLs and web.config entries would be to go to the Telerik menu at the top of your Visual Studio, and select Convert to Telerik Web Site.
You can try with this article

I'm using Visual Studio 2005 for a project I'm working on right now. I've created a new, custom control that inherits from 'UserControl'. Now I need to add that control to another Windows Form within the same project. I thought that the IDE would place this custom control into the Toolbox (as I know it's done in the past when I was using Visual Studio 2008), however, it did not. Now, I'm unsure how to get the control added to my form correctly and/or how to make it show up as it should in the Toolbox. The "Auto Toolbox Populate" option under Tools is set to 'True', so I really don't know what else needs to happen at this point. The help of anyone who's had any experience with this would be greately appreciated. Thanks a lot!
You may first build your custom control and create a dll. Then,
Right-click on the Toolbox panel -> Select 'Choose Items' -> Go to '.NET framework components' tab in the 'Choose Toolbox Items' dialog box that appears - > Browse to the dll of your custom user control -> Click OK.
Now the user control will be displaying in your tool box.
Hope this helps...
Try this
Open Solution
Build project
Open your form
Reset the toolbox
Drag the user control from solution explorer to the toolbox
Close the toolbox and all open documents
Open toolbox then the form
User control should appear
worked for me.
