I've searched in google and bing and seen all posts and even in stackoverflows search but couldn't find the solution.
To be sure about the error I've created a new project it has 1 page which has:
<asp:ListView runat="server" ID="ListView" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource" OnSelectedIndexChanged="ListView_OnSelectedIndexChanged" OnSelectedIndexChanging="ListView_OnSelectedIndexChanging">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label runat="server" ID="Label" Text='<%#Eval("UserName") %>' ></asp:Label><br/>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:ListView>
<asp:SqlDataSource runat="server" ID="SqlDataSource" SelectCommand="Select * FROM Users" ConnectionString="<%$ConnectionStrings:DefaultConnection %>"></asp:SqlDataSource>
Output:
Because I've 2 users with name A and B.
Now the problem is that events OnSelectedIndexChanged and OnSelectedIndexChanging are not firing when I click on A or B. How to get the selected index where user is clicking?
Complete Project if anyone wants to look, actually there is no need to: https://app.box.com/s/bhs682q6fqai784kao0zv1tcxgxecr4s
ListView.SelectedIndexChanging Event occurs when an item's Select button is clicked, but before the ListView control handles the select operation.
(A Select button is a button control whose CommandName property is set to "Select".)
Change your code to
<asp:ListView runat="server" ID="ListView" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource" OnSelectedIndexChanged="ListView_OnSelectedIndexChanged" OnSelectedIndexChanging="ListView_OnSelectedIndexChanging" AutoPostBack="true">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label runat="server" ID="Label" Text='<%#Eval("UserName") %>' ></asp:Label>
<asp:LinkButton runat="server" ID="ButtonSelect" CommandName="Select" Text="SelectButton"/><br/>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:ListView>

I solved this problem by adding a new GridView to ItemTemplate
I'm working on an aspx page where I'm trying to reference a dropdownlist from my code behind, now I add the dropdownlist to the page (ddlProgram) and its fine but soon as I move it into the InsertItemTemplate or EditItemTemplate or my GridView where I need it to go the designer entry disappears and I can no longer reference it from the code behind, is there a way around this? I have tried using the FindControl("ControlID") method but it always returns null. I need to set the selected index to 0 when the cancel button is click on my page. Thanks!
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Program" SortExpression="IDProgram">
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:DropDownList ID="ddlProgram" AppendDataBoundItems="true" runat="server" DataSourceID="odsProgram" DataTextField="NameWithCode" DataValueField="IDProgram" CssClass="form-control ddl-normalize">
<asp:ListItem Text="No Program" Value="-1"></asp:ListItem>
</asp:DropDownList>
</EditItemTemplate>
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="programName" runat="server" Text='<%# getProgramName((Eval("IDProgram")?? string.Empty).ToString()) %>'></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
I am supporting a web application. In that, there are two tables - TaxCode and TaxRate. TaxCode has 1 to many relationship with TaxRate.
The UI has a ListView with LayoutTemplate, ItemTemplate and EditTemplate to show TaxCode. When the users selects a tax code in EditTemplate it shows a CutomGridView that allows the user to create or edit tax rates for that particular tax code. This CustomGridView has 3 rows each has 4 template fields as shown below.
<asp:TemplateField HeaderStyle-CssClass="highlightTitlebar" HeaderStyle-Width="5%" HeaderStyle-Height="30px">
<HeaderTemplate>
<custom:CustomImageButton ID="imgAdd" runat="server" ImageUrl="image/add_round.gif" OnClick="imgAddTaxRateDetail_Click" CausesValidation="False"/>
</HeaderTemplate>
<ItemTemplate>
<custom:CustomImageButton ID="imgEdit" runat="server" ImageUrl="image/edit.gif" CommandName="Edit" />
</ItemTemplate>
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:ImageButton ID="imgUpdate" runat="server" ImageUrl="image/update.gif" CommandName="Update" />
<asp:HiddenField runat="server" ID="hfId" Value='<%# Bind("Id") %>' />
</EditItemTemplate>
<FooterTemplate>
<asp:ImageButton ID="imgInsert" runat="server" ImageUrl="image/insert.gif" CommandName="Insert" OnClick="imgInsert_Click" />
</FooterTemplate>
Each row in the CustomGridView is a template field. In, below image EffectiveOn section is CustomGridView,
When I try to save TaxRate with proper EffectiveOn and Rate, it throws "Insert can only be called on an insert item. Ensure only the InsertTemplate has a button with CommandName=Insert." error as the ListView doesn't have InsertTemplate. But the record gets inserted into the DB.
Please let me know if there is any way to resolve this issue?
The error is self explanatory.
Take a look at this: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.webcontrols.listview.insertitemtemplate(v=vs.110).aspx
So you can do either of these things.
Create an InsertItemplate and insert using the ItemInserted event of the listview
Change the CommandName to CommandName="InsertData" and catch that event on the ItemCommand
I have one page which is placed in the Master Page.
In the master page I have 1 dropdown and one GridView, dropdown is display the category, based on the dropdown list selection it will display the list of videos in the Grid.
In the content page I have the video player, in the page load it will play the video by default.
But when I choose the drop down list which is available in the master page, the page is refreshing, SO the video is start play from the first.
The content page should not refresh, So the video will continuously play.
How can I stop the page refresh in the content page?
All are in master page.

in code behind for binding grid,
DataTable dt1Video = new MDBusiness.MDSUser().GetVideo(intNetId, intChanId, intCatId);
grd_Video.DataSource = dt1Video;
grd_Video.DataBind();
up1.Update();
up2.Update();
Set AutoPostBack = "False" on your dropdownlist to stop the postback from occurring. Users will then be able to change the dropdownlist without anything happening.
You'll need to use AJAX with your dropdownlist if you want to be able to use it without the postback.
for a quick answer
Install ASP.NET AJAX library
Wrap the GridView in a UpdatePanel
Set the trigger to be the DropDownList
Done :)
Remember to see this Screencast... it is exactly what you are after!
First off, I am not dynamically creating any controls. This is the order I take to produce the error:
I have a listview on the page, when I click the edit link under the listview, I display a panel which is hidden by default. The panel has a few buttons on it along with some listboxes. When I click an item in the listbox or click one of the buttons, I get the following error:
Failed to load viewstate. The control tree into which viewstate is being loaded must match the control tree that was used to save viewstate during the previous request. For example, when adding controls dynamically, the controls added during a post-back must match the type and position of the controls added during the initial request.
Again, I am not creating anything dynamically, I am just hiding the panel with the controls by default and then displaying them, so I am not sure why I am getting this error.
Here is some code:
PAGE LOAD
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
if (!Page.IsPostBack)
{
Session["Albums"] = null;
Albums = AlbumCollection.GetAlbums(Common.GetUserName(),
ddlAlbumType.SelectedIndex);
lvwAlbums.DataSource = Albums;
lvwAlbums.DataBind();
}
}
When I click the edit link, this is the code that runs:
protected void lvwAlbums_RowEditing(object sender, ListViewEditEventArgs e)
{
this.AlbumId = int.Parse(
this.lvwAlbums.DataKeys[e.NewEditIndex].Values["AlbumId"].ToString());
this.AlbumName=
this.lvwAlbums.DataKeys[e.NewEditIndex].Values["AlbumName"].ToString();
Album album = new Album(this.AlbumId);
ViewState["AlbumId"] = this.AlbumId;
ViewState["AlbumName"] = this.AlbumName;
pnlAlbum.Visible = true; // This panel holds the controls
btnEditAlbum.Visible = true;
btnCancel.Visible = true;
EditAlbum(this.AlbumId);
this.lvwAlbums.EditIndex = e.NewEditIndex;
AlbumCollection.GetAlbums(Common.GetUserName(),ddlAlbumType.SelectedIndex);
}
If I click the cancel button, I get the error, but it also happens if click another button on the panel such as Add/Remove... Here is the code for the Cancel button:
pnlAlbum.Visible = false;
this.lvwAlbums.EditIndex = -1;
AlbumCollection.GetAlbums(Common.GetUserName(), ddlAlbumType.SelectedIndex);
Here is the aspx/html for the ListView:

OnItemEditing="lvwAlbums_RowEditing"

</ItemTemplate>
</asp:ListView>
Here is the markup for the Panel:
<asp:Panel ID="pnlAlbum" runat="server" Visible="false">
<asp:ListBox ID="lstAvailableSongs" runat="server" SelectionMode="Multiple">
</asp:ListBox>
<asp:Button ID="btnAddAll" runat="server" Text="Add All" OnClick="btnAddAll_Click" />

<asp:Button ID="btnRemoveAll" runat="server"
Text="Remove All"OnClick="btnRemoveAll_Click" />
<asp:ListBox ID="lstSelectedSongs" runat="server" SelectionMode="Multiple">

<asp:Button ID="btnCancel" runat="server" Text="Cancel" OnClick="btnCancel_Click" />
<asp:Button ID="btnEditAlbum" runat="server"Text="Save"
ValidationGroup="CreateAlbum" OnClick="btnEditAlbum_Click" />
<asp:Button ID="btnSaveAs" runat="server" Text="Save As" ValidationGroup="CreateAlbum"
OnClick="btnSaveAs_Click" />
</asp:Panel>
Here is some extra info:
I put an update panel around one of the listboxes in the panel and when I clicked the edit link under a listview item, I received the following error:
Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.InvalidOperationException: Could not find UpdatePanel with ID 'ctl00_ctl00_InnerContent_MainContent_UpdatePanel4'. If it is being updated dynamically then it must be inside another UpdatePanel.
Putting an UpdatePanel around the whole asp.net panel resolved the issue above, but I still get the Failed to load viewstate error when clicking on Cancel or Add, etc...
First off, you probably need to rebind the ListView after setting the EditIndex. (honestly, I haven't used ListView at all, but this is how the other repeater controls work) What does "EditAlbum()" do?
Your code is a little odd... why do you have the same controls in your EditItemTemplate as in the ItemTemplate? Ie, the Edit button should only be in the ItemTemplate... Then EditItemTemplate should have a Save or Cancel button.
Bottom line... your control tree is different on LoadViewState than it is when SaveViewState was called. One thing you can do is override these methods and then put a breakpoint there to manually look at the Controls collection in the debugger. You will probably see that the controls inside the ListView are different. But try my first suggestion before you do this.
Question for you:
in your Page_Load you have
Albums = AlbumCollection.GetAlbums(Common.GetUserName(), ddlAlbumType.SelectedIndex);
but in lvwAlbums_RowEditing(..) and in btnCancel_Click(...) you have
AlbumCollection.GetAlbums(Common.GetUserName(), ddlAlbumType.SelectedIndex);
shouldn't these be (Albums = ...)
Albums = AlbumCollection.GetAlbums(Common.GetUserName(), ddlAlbumType.SelectedIndex);
