When a method that gets called on a worker thread needs to run code on the UI thread and wait for it to complete before doing something else, it can be done like this:

I'd like to use something like this in my Xamarin Forms iOS/Android app to be able to work with the same codebase.
This is all needed because of a 3rdparty library which does not support async/await. For the same reason I cannot just use Task.Run() or ConfigureAwait(false) because the functions are needed to be run on the UI tread and I need to wait for the result before launching the next Task from the same blocking function.

Changing it would be a tremendous work. But the rest of my code is async and I was able to work around this problem in WPF easily by using the message pumping method.

It's hard to say without being able to test it but it looks like your trigger cache update method is fine, it's your RefreshCache that needs to change. Inside of RefreshCache you are not waiting in the UI thread for the result of "data" to return so set the ConfigureAwait to false.

Your event handler is async. That means, that even if you await for a Task to complete, that your UI remains responsive. So even if you would await for the TriggerCacheUpdate to return, your UI would remain responsive.
However, if you are really certain that you are not interested in the result of TriggerCachUpdate, then you could start a Task without waiting for it:

Note: careful: you don't know when TriggerCachUpdate is finished, not even if it ended successfully or threw an exception. Also: check what happens if you start a new TriggerCacheUpdate task while the previous one is not finished yet.

One reason you may need to dispatch work that's already on the UI thread is to workaround subtle timing and layout issues. It's quite common for values of sizes and positions of elements in the visual tree to be in flux and scheduling work for a later iteration of the UI can help.

Your question is assuming that you want to schedule (and wait for) work on a UI thread from a background thread.
You'll usually find your code is much cleaner and easier to understand (and it will definitely be more portable) if you have the UI be the "master" and the background threads be the "slaves".
So, instead of having a background thread await some operation for the UI thread to do (using the awkward and unportable Dispatcher.RunAsync), you'll have the UI thread await some operation for the background thread to do (using the portable, made-for-async Task.Run).
You can wrap the call to RunAsync in your own asynchronous method that can be awaited and control the completion of the task and thus the continuation of awaiting callers yourself.
Since async-await is centred on the Task type, you must orchestrate the work using this type. However, usually a Task schedules itself to run on a threadpool thread and so it cannot be used to schedule UI work.
However, the TaskCompletionSource type was invented to act as a kind of puppeteer to an unscheduled Task. In other words, a TaskCompletionSource can create a dummy Task that is not scheduled to do anything, but via methods on the TaskCompletionSource can appear to be running and completing like a normal job.

Note: the main work being done on the UI thread is just some lines being drawn on screen every 100ms.
A TaskCompletionSource is created as the puppet master. Look near the end and you'll see that it has a Task property that is returned to the caller. Returning Task satisfies the compilers needs and makes the method awaitable and asynchronous.
However, the Task is just a puppet, a proxy for the actual work going on in the UI thread.
See how in that main UI delegate I use the TaskCompletionSource.SetResult method to force a result into the Task (since returned to the caller) and communicate that work has finished.
If there's an error, I use SetException to 'pull another string' and make it appear that an exception has bubbled-up in the puppet Task.
The async-await subsystem knows no different and so it works as you'd expect.

You can't. Tasks use background threads from the thread pool. Also canceling threads using the Abort method is not recommended. You may take a look at the following blog post which explains a proper way of canceling tasks using cancellation tokens. Here's an example:

Although it works, it's not recommended to use such approach. If you can control the code that executes in task, you'd better go with proper handling of cancellation.
Aborting a Task is easily possible if you capture the thread in which the task is running in. Here is an example code to demonstrate this:

I used Task.Run() to show the most common use-case for this - using the comfort of Tasks with old single-threaded code, which does not use the CancellationTokenSource class to determine if it should be canceled or not.
This sort of thing is one of the logistical reasons why Abort is deprecated. First and foremost, do not use Thread.Abort() to cancel or stop a thread if at all possible. Abort() should only be used to forcefully kill a thread that is not responding to more peaceful requests to stop in a timely fashion.
That being said, you need to provide a shared cancellation indicator that one thread sets and waits while the other thread periodically checks and gracefully exits. .NET 4 includes a structure designed specifically for this purpose, the CancellationToken.
I use a mixed approach to cancel a task.
Firstly, I'm trying to Cancel it politely with using the Cancellation.
If it's still running (e.g. due to a developer's mistake), then misbehave and kill it using an old-school Abort method.

To answer Prerak K's question about how to use CancellationTokens when not using an anonymous method in Task.Factory.StartNew(), you pass the CancellationToken as a parameter into the method you're starting with StartNew(), as shown in the MSDN example here.

You should not try to do this directly. Design your tasks to work with a CancellationToken, and cancel them this way.
In addition, I would recommend changing your main thread to function via a CancellationToken as well. Calling Thread.Abort() is a bad idea - it can lead to various problems that are very difficult to diagnose. Instead, that thread can use the same Cancellation that your tasks use - and the same CancellationTokenSource can be used to trigger the cancellation of all of your tasks and your main thread.
This will lead to a far simpler, and safer, design.
Tasks have first class support for cancellation via cancellation tokens. Create your tasks with cancellation tokens, and cancel the tasks via these explicitly.
You can use a CancellationToken to control whether the task gets cancelled. Are you talking about aborting it before it's started ("nevermind, I already did this"), or actually interrupting it in middle? If the former, the CancellationToken can be helpful; if the latter, you will probably need to implement your own "bail out" mechanism and check at appropriate points in the task execution whether you should fail fast (you can still use the CancellationToken to help you, but it's a little more manual).

You can abort a task like a thread if you can cause the task to be created on its own thread and call Abort on its Thread object. By default, a task runs on a thread pool thread or the calling thread - neither of which you typically want to abort.
To ensure the task gets its own thread, create a custom scheduler derived from TaskScheduler. In your implementation of QueueTask, create a new thread and use it to execute the task. Later, you can abort the thread, which will cause the task to complete in a faulted state with a ThreadAbortException.

Is this, the use of Task.Factory, the best way to write an asynchronous method, or should I write this another way?
I don't recommend StartNew unless you need that level of complexity.
If your async method is dependent on other async methods, the easiest approach is to use the async keyword:

If your async method is doing CPU work, you should use Task.Run:

To support such a paradigm with Tasks, we need a way to retain the Task façade and the ability to refer to an arbitrary asynchronous operation as a Task, but to control the lifetime of that Task according to the rules of the underlying infrastructure that’s providing the asynchrony, and to do so in a manner that doesn’t cost significantly. This is the purpose of TaskCompletionSource.
I saw it's also used in the .NET source, e.g. WebClient.cs:

I get asked this question all the time. The implication is that there must be some thread somewhere that’s blocking on the I/O call to the external resource. So, asynchronous code frees up the request thread, but only at the expense of another thread elsewhere in the system, right? No, not at all.
To understand why asynchronous requests scale, I’ll trace a (simplified) example of an asynchronous I/O call. Let’s say a request needs to write to a file. The request thread calls the asynchronous write method. WriteAsync is implemented by the Base Class Library (BCL), and uses completion ports for its asynchronous I/O. So, the WriteAsync call is passed down to the OS as an asynchronous file write. The OS then communicates with the driver stack, passing along the data to write in an I/O request packet (IRP).
This is where things get interesting: If a device driver can’t handle an IRP immediately, it must handle it asynchronously. So, the driver tells the disk to start writing and returns a “pending” response to the OS. The OS passes that “pending” response to the BCL, and the BCL returns an incomplete task to the request-handling code. The request-handling code awaits the task, which returns an incomplete task from that method and so on. Finally, the request-handling code ends up returning an incomplete task to ASP.NET, and the request thread is freed to return to the thread pool.

If the target is to improve scalability (rather than responsiveness), it all relies on the existence of an external I/O that provides the opportunity to do that.
One very simple way to make a method asynchronous is to use Task.Yield() method. As MSDN states:
You can use await Task.Yield(); in an asynchronous method to force the
method to complete asynchronously.
Insert it at beginning of your method and it will then return immediately to the caller and complete the rest of the method on another thread.
