I have a footer template in my gridview which allows users to add new items to the grid. Since they don't want to go below the page each time to add and they want to bring that footer row as the first row of the gridview.
ASPX:
<asp:GridView ID="gvApplication" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" HorizontalAlign="center"
ShowFooter="True" CellPadding="3" GridLines="Both" CssClass="contentfont" ShowHeaderWhenEmpty="True"
EmptyDataText="No Records Found" OnRowDataBound="gvApplication_RowDataBound"
OnRowDeleting="gvApplication_RowDeleting" OnRowCommand="gvApplication_RowCommand"
DataKeyNames="ID,Group,App_Name" Width="100%">
<Columns>
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="ID"
<asp:Label ID="lblID" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("[ID]") %>'></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
<FooterTemplate>

<HeaderTemplate>
<asp:DropDownList ID="ddlID" runat="server" Width="150px" AutoPostBack="True"
OnSelectedIndexChanged="ddlID_SelectedIndexChanged" />
</HeaderTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
add FooterStyle-HorizontalAlign="Right" to the parent column of the template
Since Internet explorer dropped support for css top:expression - I have had to separate gridview headers into a separate table.
I have a table. In the first row / first cell I put another table containing the table headers.
In the next row / first cell I have a div set to be 20px wider than the table above (to allow for scroll bar on div). The div contains the gridview with no header. In the pre_render of the gridview I set the widths of the columns in both tables.
I spend a bit of time checking the size of the user screen etc and setting widths for the the tables / div (and a height for the div). The result is a table with static headers which are exactly the same width as the gridview below. You could easily do this and add an extra row in the header table to contain the controls that are currently in the footer row of the gridview.

But am getting null value for string conn = item.Cells[1].Text;
where am I going wrong
Grid contains the different row type like header row , data row and footer row. You need to get content from the data row only then please check the row type first if it is a data row then try to get cell values. GridViewRow.RowType Property
foreach(GridViewRow item in GdvTestData.Rows) {
// check row is datarow
if (item.RowType == DataControlRowType.DataRow) {
CheckBox chk = (item.FindControl("CheckBox3") as CheckBox);
if (chk.Checked)
{
Label MyLabel = (Label)item.FindControl("lbl_conn");
string conn = MyLabel.Text;
}
}

I am extracting data from database in gridview, where I have given a link button "Edit" for editing the data of that row. However while editing , one of the columns(YEAR) of my gridview becomes a dropdown list. While fetching the data from database, the Column "Year" consists of label and in edit mode it gets changed to dropdownlist. Moreover I added a condition to make the link buttons appear/disappear based on the value of the Label "Year". When I edit the particular row it throws an error because as soon as edit command is called it converts the column into dropdownlist however the row_databound searches for label. It shows "Object not set to an instance....." PLease help

I am assuming that you are binding your grid with a DataTable with colum name "Year". Try below code where dt refers to your Datatable:
protected void gv1_RowDataBound(object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e)
{
if (e.Row.RowType == DataControlRowType.DataRow)
{
int rowno = e.Row.DataItemIndex;
//Suppose dt is DataTable to which you are binding your grid
//and year is the column name within this datatable
string year = Convert.ToString(dt.Rows[e.Row.DataItemIndex]["year"]);
if (year == DateTime.Now.Year.ToString() || year == ((DateTime.Now.Year) - 1).ToString())
{
LinkButton btedt = (LinkButton)e.Row.FindControl("btnedit");
LinkButton btdel = (LinkButton)e.Row.FindControl("btndel");
LinkButton btsm = (LinkButton)e.Row.FindControl("btnmail");
btdel.Visible = true;
btedt.Visible = true;
btsm.Visible = true;
}
if ((e.Row.RowState & DataControlRowState.Edit) > 0)
{
RadioButtonList rbtnlist = (RadioButtonList)e.Row.FindControl("rbtnlist");
DropDownList ddlist = (DropDownList)e.Row.FindControl("ddlyr");
for (int i = (DateTime.Now.Year); i >= ((DateTime.Now.Year) - 1); i--)
{
ddlist.Items.Add(new ListItem(i.ToString(), i.ToString()));
}
ddlist.DataBind();
rbtnlist.DataBind();
}
}
I have a gridview and few columns in gridview have amount calculations. And I have added a new datarow at the last of the gridview which sums up the column values and displays.
But the last row in gridview has edit and delete button visible and how could I possibly hide those two images from last row?

You can hide them programatically:
var lastRow = gvDetails.Rows[gvDetails.Rows.Count - 1];
lastRow.FindControl("imgbtnEdit").Visible = false;
lastRow.FindControl("imgbtnDelete").Visible = false;
Ideally this should be done after grid view is data bound and has all rows (including the last one), but as a last resort you can use Page_PreRender.
The Best place for summation data is in the footer, that will take care of having the command controls as they are not added to the footer.
See: Displaying Summary Data in the Footer
Also: What is the XY Problem?
Example (should be easy to convert to C#):
'Note Global Declaration
Dim Total1 As Double = 0
Dim Total2 As Double = 0
Protected Sub GridView1_RowDataBound _
(sender As Object, e As GridViewRowEventArgs) Handles GridView1.RowDataBound
If e.Row.RowType = DataControlRowType.DataRow Then
Dim drv as DataRowView = CType(e.Row.DataItem, DataRowView)
' Perform summations on Data rows
Total1 += CDbl(drv("<column_name>").ToString())
Total2 += CDbl(drv("<other_column_name>").ToString())
ElseIf e.Row.RowType = DataControlRowType.Footer Then
' Place results in footer cells
e.Row.Cells(2).Text = "Total: " & Total1.ToString()
e.Row.Cells(3).Text = "Total: " & Total2.ToString()
Endif
End Sub
Try this
set visibility of your edit & delete button column to false. You can set the column index accordingly.
protected void GridView1_RowDataBound(object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e)
{
if (e.Row.RowType == DataControlRowType.DataRow)
{
e.Row.Cells[0].Visible = false; //0 is autogenerate edit column index
e.Row.Cells[1].Visible = false; // 1 is autogenerate delete column index
}
}
I have a Gridview and inside I have another one nested GridView. When I press a plus button the nested GridView expands using a JavScript. The nested GridView expands on edit mode using TextBox controls. So when the user types on a TextBox would have the ability to update the cell using an update button. My problem is that when I press the update button the update occurs but not how I would expected. If for example the initial value of a cell was “My name is Peter” and I have done the edit “I don’t have a name” The new value that will be saved is exactly this: “My name is Peter, I don’t have a name”. The databind of the nested GridView occurs on the parent GridView DataBound event.
My code:

GridViewRow row = (GridViewRow)(sender as Control).Parent.Parent.Parent;
int index = row.RowIndex;
int mi = masterrow.RowIndex;
int i = index;
GridView nestedGridView = (GridView)GridView1.Rows[mi].FindControl("nestedGridView");
Label nestedID = (Label)nestedGridView.Rows[index].FindControl("nestedID");
int sbid = Convert.ToInt32(nestedID.Text);
TextBox name = (TextBox)nestedGridView.Rows[index].FindControl("name");
string myname = Convert.ToString(name.Text);
//update name with the new value
Nesteditem updatenesteditem = mylinqobjects.Nesteditems.Single(p => p.nesteditemID == sbid);
if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(myname))
{
updatenesteditem.nesteditemName = myname;
mylinqobjects.SubmitChanges();
}
}
Replaced the current text by removing the old one.
string myname = name.Text.Substring(name.Text.LastIndexOf(",")+1);
Tried all possiblities, but due nested grid view rendering and its restrictions, we could do only like above.
Any others solutions, please provide.
I have the following database design:
Employee Table: Username, Name, JobTitle, BadgeNo, IsActive, DivisionCode
Divisions Table: SapCode, DivisionShortcut
And I have a GridView that I am using it to add, delete and update/edit the employees information. This information is employee Username, Name, BadgeNo, JobTitle, IsActive and the DivisionShortcut. IsActive is a flag that indicates if the employee is available or in an assignment. I made it as a checkbox and the column should show two values; Active and Inactive. In the Edit mode, the Checkbox will be displayed. If it is checked, then it means the employee is avaiable, otherwise it is inactive.
I wrote the code and everything works fine, but now I am facing two problems and I don't know how to make them work with my code.
The GridView shows True or False instead of Active and Inactive and
I don't know why.
In the Edit mode, the checkbox will be displayed and the values (Active or Inactive) will be displayed besides to it and it shouldn't be displayed. I just want the checkbox to be displayed.
So how to modify them?

For question no: 1
You have to add an Row_DataBound Event of your grid view, in which you select the IsActive column and replaced its text by Active and InActive. But before going to code behind make a little change to you aspx code: In your item template instead of direct binding place a label control and bind it as I does in the below code:
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Is Active?">
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="lblIsActive" runat="server" Text='<%# Eval("IsActive") %>' ></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:CheckBox ID="isActive" runat="server"
AutoPostBack="true" OnCheckedChanged="isActive_OnCheckedChanged"
Checked='<%# Convert.ToBoolean(Eval("IsActive")) %>'
Text='<%# Eval("IsActive").ToString().Equals("True") ? " Active " : " Inactive " %>'/>
</EditItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
protected void GridView1_RowDataBound(object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e)
{
if (e.Row.RowType == DataControlRowType.DataRow)
{
// here you will select the IsActive column and modify it's text
Label isActive=new Label();
isActive = (Label) e.row.FindControl("lblIsActive");
// after getting the reference set its text
isActive.Text="Active or InActive";
}
}
For question no 2:
Remove the condition form this
Eval("IsActive").ToString().Equals("True") ? " Active " : " Inactive " %>'
and replace it with
Eval("IsActive")
Now check boxes will be displayed.
Updated Answer:
You are receiving an object reference not found error, Please debug your site and check it why you are unable to get the exact reference. I saw you code and it looks that your code is fine.
To prove that my code is working,I created a gridview with a single column
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="false" OnRowDataBound="GridView1_RowDataBound">
<Columns>
<asp:TemplateField>
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("name") %>'></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>
// and bind this grid view in the Page_Load of my Page
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
DataTable dt = new DataTable();
dt.Columns.Add("name");
DataRow row = dt.NewRow();
row[0] = "Waqar Janjua";
dt.Rows.Add(row);
GridView1.DataSource = dt;
GridView1.DataBind();
}
// When I view this page in the browser it shows "Waqar Janjua"
// Now to update the columns text, I add the following code and it works.
protected void GridView1_RowDataBound(object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e)
{
if (e.Row.RowState != DataControlRowState.Edit)
{
if (e.Row.RowType == DataControlRowType.DataRow)
{
Label l = new Label();
l = (Label)e.Row.FindControl("Label1");
l.Text = "waqar";
}
}
}
// When I run this page now, it shows me "Waqar" not "Waqar Janjua" The code works for me.
It is returning "true" or "false" as it is expecting a boolean data type from IsActive. If you want to change that out put, I suspect you need to amend this conditionally on the ItemDataBound event of the grid.
